Thanks for watching, everyone! Trombonists: what’s your choice of mouthpiece for concert and symphonic playing? I’m still dialing in my setup and would love to hear what you use and why!

I use Denis Wick 6BL and Kelly 51D For Large Bore Trombone I use Wick 6BL for the Most of popular music playing because I have more higher register and about the same lower register than the Kelly 51D. Also is a bit Brighter Sound I use the 51D For Most of the Symphonic playing because this mouthpiece has a pretty dark sound. My Trombone Also is a darker sounding one because of the rose Brass bell (Almost Copper color) it has Both mouthpieces are pretty similar rim sizes (6½ ish) But the cup depth of the Wick is Like a 5GS Size The cup depth of the Kelly is between 5G and 4G

@@Juan_Bone09 That’s a really good analysis of why you use the gear you do. Props to you.

Great review! For marching band I play on a small bore baritone so I use a Yamaha 51D to try to compensate and it really does get that darker sound, as much as possible being a small shank

Thanks Caleb! I definitely think the 51D helped the Yamaha YEP-321 get a darker sound, so I’ll bet it works well for your use too!

Hello samuel. Recently i saw an old film called dr terrors house of horrors. Well in the first part of it there was a jazz band but there was an instrument that i cant for the life of me identify. It looked like a french horn but was played like a trumpet. It was not a mellaphone or anything i can find. I then thought you were my only hope in finding out what it is
@SamuelPlaysBrass11 ай бұрын
Any chance it could be either a Holton marching French horn or a Conn Mellophonium? Those would be my first two guesses as far as "looks like a French horn but is played like a trumpet."

hello. I recently bought a new tenorhorn, and it came with a V.F. Červený 6 1/2 al E mouthpiece. it is too big for me. i used to have a much smaller mouthpiece, and I could get up to the fourth octave. what mouthpiece should i get for high register and with a very round rim? (note: the tenorhorn's bore is 13.2 mm and the bell diameter is 240 mm)
@SamuelPlaysBrass3 ай бұрын
It really depends on how drastic you want to go. If you want the smallest inner diameter you can find, you might try the Schilke 40B/42B or Bach 22D. If the inner diameter is not as much an issue but you need the tightest cup possible, then perhaps a Yamaha 48A or Bach 15E. It’s tough for me to say without knowing you and your playing personally.

@SamuelPlaysBrass for a reference, I play high songs as Eine gemse in den Bergen. I think the old mouthpiece I used has a cup diameter of 22.80 mm

@@SamuelPlaysBrass what do you think of schilke 43a? is it any good for high register playing?
@SamuelPlaysBrass3 ай бұрын
@@thetenorhorn I’ve never tried one, but I can’t imagine it isn’t. Similarly narrow ID and very shallow cup.

Oooooooo do I spot an 80a Victor in the background???
@SamuelPlaysBrass11 ай бұрын
I think it predates the 80A or Victor designators, as back in 1927 it was known as the “New Wonder,” but I’d say you’re technically correct!
