I could live with the A-S301 happily ever after.
I could NOT live w/out my Forte III's. Forget the Forte IV's. Just because the # is higher does not make better.
Please equalize the volume on the Yamaha sample, it might be a bit lower in level, to be fair to the Yama.
Yamaha A-S301 sells for roughly $350. The Luxman roughly $9,000.
Yamaha has a fantastic repute.
Compare to, for example a similar Craap Audio Amp for $350; a "marketing company" and hardly anything more.
How long has Craap been in business? How long will they be in business?
This Yamaha sound/$ value is unbelievable.
There is absolutely no need to spend $9,000 on a Lux to achieve 90% of the sound quality.
Sincerely, Stereopolice. Don't purchase Craap. I am still a Yamaha fanboy.
Of course, if you can afford Lux, do it. It took me years to pay it off LOL. Respect!

I've happily lived with an A-S301 for a few years, then I moved to another apartment and changed to a more power demanding set of speakers, and purchased the A-S801 because I liked the sound of its younger brother. I stored the A-S301 with the idea of selling it, but what I was going to get vs. the fondness I had for it was not worth it, so in the end I set it up in my brother's apartment with a couple of Mission 780 MkII and... Oh boy... what a joy to listen to...

Well, no doubt the Luxman has more refined highs, and superior dynamics, but at some considerable cost. I own a A-S501, and I love it, and I can see the AS-301 sounds pretty much like it. One of my favourite features of the AS-501 (also present on the AS-301) is the variable Loudness control (also mentioned on other comments), and the fact that for whatever reason Yamaha doesn´t include it on the higher models has always refrained me from going up their line. I think Luxman amps have a loudness button, but I guess it wont give you the same level of control as a loudness dial.

Wow! Just subscribed. Checked out many of your videos. It’s nice to see someone review a value priced product without listening to all the snooty, hoity toity BS. Keep on keeping it real. I can appreciate the expensive high end stuff too, but it’s comparisons like this that sometimes make me question myself when making high dollar purchases. Thank you. Good stuff!

Indeed it is amazing what Yamaha has achieved over the years. I have owned and used so many brands and kinds of ampifiers and finally settled to a vintage small Yamaha A-400 after having my friends CA-800 for a while. To my ears, Yamaha did sounded the best when I A/B it with a Luxman L30.

The A-S301 is a great little amp. I purchased one used and it lasted me for a number of years, until it started crapping out once it got warmed up. Replaced the A-S301 with the Yamaha A-S701. I love Yamaha's 'Loudness' control, to up the low end when listening at lower volumes. The amps are enjoyed through some Forte II's.

A-S301 is what I’ve had in m tv duty for years. It’s been great. Easy to listen to and love their aesthetic. I’ve wanted it to cheap out for a while so I can try another from the line but it just keeps on ticking! I really want to hear the Lux 550. That one has had my eye for a long time.

The 301 lacks the clarity and detail of the Luxman, but I am sure there is a huge difference in price. The Yamaha does nothing to offend, it is just not as polished and refined. I always like the Yamaha adjustable loudness controls.

Nobody should be surprised. Most normal listening is done using 1 to 5 watts of power. Any decently designed and built amp can do that all day without strain, and at a distortion level far below human perception. Purist who insist otherwise should subject themselves to a true, well regulated double blind listening test.

Not bad at all especially when you factor in the price delta. To me the Yamaha sounds a little thinner, less meat on the bone

I do not think the difference in price is worth it. I sold Jolida and Black Ice Audio for a long time. I have had many amps and speakers come and go over the years. I have an Onkyo A-9110 now with Klipsch RP-250F speakers sounds great to me. The a-s301 has a smooth sound. Clear, and smooth.Why would you need more?

A nice little affordable amp. What annoys me is that this has the variable loudness control, but my A-S3200 doesn't. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned I could listen to Enya on a Crosley suitcase record player and it would still be heaven. Oh, and I do love the Luxman.

I have the as 301 and for the price it's a good amplifier not perfect but good The Luxman should sound much better for the price in fact it sounds better But not everyone can effort to pay the price of the Luxman. It's a dream to have a Luxman integrated amplifie, sounds really great.

As someone who has owned 3 different versions of the Cornwalls (originals, III's, and IV's) I can say that I prefer the subtle toned down treble of the IV's. Not that they necessarily sounded better than the III's, just slightly different and not as sibilant. You cannot go wrong with any Cornwalls though, I miss all of them. Lol

Umm, over earphones, the Luxman sounds far better to me with much more finely-grained resolution of richness.

I bet no one here can listen to the luxman. Leave for half an hour then come back and know for sure if they’re listening to the Yamaha or luxman. Only difference I could point out in their sound signature was a slight difference in the bottom fullness. Not enough to pay an extra 6-8k.

The S301 is gimped by Yamaha's need to upsell you different models. S301 and S501 are basically the same amp with different parts. The most obvious being the amp caps that are 6800uF on 301 and 12000uF on the 501. This should make a huge difference. And you probably need more if you have difficult speakers or listen to music at louder than home-friendly volumes. The PSU caps are also different on different markets. 2200uF vs 4700uF. Someone with basic electronics understanding can probably make these amps really sing

Sou técnico. Os valores dos capacitâncias dependem da amperagem da fonte, no 301 a amperagem a ser filtrada da oscilação da rede é menor, portanto não há necessidade de grandes capacitâncias maiores. Colocar excesso de capacitâncias pode melhorar ligeiramente os graves, o áudio no geral não é beneficiado, inclusive os agudos podem ser prejudicados

@@Audioupgrade220 Filtering is only one function of the capacitors, and the amp is already doing a good job rejecting noise. The larger benefit of larger caps is going to be from acting like a de-coupling capacitor that provides a low impedance and inductance source to the amp.

How to make a fool of yourself as a hifi company. Build a product that costs $10.000 but doesn't sound much better than a product costing a fraction. This is why i will never "upgrade" from my A-S1100.

Had a Yamaha as 700 worse amp I ever heard. Absolute doo doo. Oh and a Luxman 590axii. They should not even be mentioned in the same sentence. Don't fool yourself. Audiodrom gives Yamaha and NAD the worst ratings period. 3's on a scale 1 to 10.
