Wait...bari Venova would actually be light enough to spend more time practicing playing it instead of powerlifting to be able to carry it...this needs to happen.

It's not the curve that changes the tone, it's actually the weird branching tube that comes out of the top. Without it, it would be a clarinet yes. Someone at Yamaha did fancy math to figure out that the branched tube was equivalent to a conical pipe (the type used on saxophones, oboes and bassoons).

I'm beginning to see a pattern here. Give one of these to a professional sax player and it sounds just so -so. Give one to a professional recorder player (like Fabio Teran) and it sounds pretty good. I'm beginning to think that it's not the instrument but the instrumentalist. My recommendation is to get competent, at least, on a soprano or alto recorder, preferably with baroque fingering, before you plunk down the money on one of these. Coming from a sax or clarinet doesn't seem to work well.

Iʻve owned one for a bit. His last critique is most important. This just plays differently from other reed instruments. First impressions are terrible, Iʻve shelfed mine for a bit because of it. But if youʻre willing to adapt your technique, it starts sounding really nice.

I honestly think the branch tube at the top of the bore is the most important part of the sax-like sound, as that makes it open at both ends, like a flute, which means that the overtones are all present. The saxophone achieves the same effect by being conical. This is in contrast to the clarinet with its cylindrical closed-at-one-end bore, which doesn't produce the first overtone, which also means it overblows a 12th instead of an octave. Check out Linsey Pollak on youtube's Cylisax for a more intonation-friendly version of the venova.
@DynamixWarePro5 жыл бұрын
When you played that at the start, I didn't like it as it sounds like a kazoo that can play different notes, but I liked the playing at the end a bit more as I think playing it slower with longer notes helps the sound. Perhaps a wider bore would have made the tone fuller? I like the original Venova sound a little more. Can this take normal alto sax mouthpieces? If so, would it be possible to make a video to demonstrate it with different mouthpieces? Just curious how different mouthpieces would change the tone.
@robertmoffat51185 жыл бұрын
I know they do take all alto mouthpieces as I have recently tried one- I agree though, it would be interesting to see how different mouthpieces affect tone!

Recorder fingering except that it has octave key (in the recorder its only a hole and cover the half to reach 2nd and 3rd register) idk if its German or Baroque fingering
@edwardmeade4 жыл бұрын
@@Hiroyuki_T Either. There is a rubber insert on one of the lower holes. Leave it in and it's German fingering, take it out and it's baroque fingering.
@edwardmeade4 жыл бұрын
Better to think of it as a recorder with a reed instead of a fipple.
@Hiroyuki_T4 жыл бұрын
@@edwardmeade I saw that too. Some ppl doesn't know the two fingerings. It seems that Yamaha chose it because it's the easiest (closest to the sax)
@BroadwayBaby12215 жыл бұрын
Is the fingering for this the same as the alto sax?
@edwardmeade4 жыл бұрын
Not even close. It's basically an alto recorder. If you want to learn to play I'd suggest getting a good alto recorder method.

Never have I play any wind instrument. But I saw this one and I thought this would be a nice one for me to pick up. Its small and different. Would you say I could use the Alto Venova to play with the church praise team?
@wish_i_had_a_river4 жыл бұрын
Most likely not unless you have the microphone pressed up against it, it isn't very loud especially in a place like a church setting although there's no doubt in my mind that you couldn't make it work. And if you do figure it out it would actually be really cool! Best of luck with the instrument if you do try this! God Bless!

12/1/21......My next question is "why"? You are an excellent player of this new instrument, but I still don't like the sound of it. It would be improved by being heard with other instruments, playing, simultaneously. But by its self,...it is not appealing to me.

12/1/21....The sound of cheap white plastic resonating is not appealing,....though the Alto Venova, sounded better than the short ones. I never liked the sound coming from a school recorder. There is a distinctive cheap plastic-ness to the sound, that the reed mouth piece, doesn't improve. If it were made of wood, you'd get a richer sound. With today's technology one could have one made with the aid of a computer, I believe.
