Have you experimented with Abel hammers and German made strings like Röslau to permanently alter and mellow the tone so it doesn’t sound as hard on the ears? I understand it’s a lengthy expensive process but people who have had that sort of work done on Yamaha instruments are really pleased with the results, as long as a tech knows exactly what their doing with experience in rebuilding. They say it gives Kawai a run for their money, so I’m really excited about that and didn’t know you could do that extensive type of work on a Yamaha c3 to make it tonally more variable and colourful!!!

Hi Rachel how are you? I don't work in the piano trade but I've heard about this too. I've heard about Abel Natural Felt hammers being fitted to Yamaha pianos and the results have been incredible. It's a well designed piano to start with but the hammers do let them down at least on the lower level products and the older pianos. Piano Restorations Ltd have put Natural Felt hammers on a few Yamahas now.

I think Yamaha's best period for tone is from about 2010 to now. If you put this next to most C3X's, the C3X has a warmer, better sustaining tone. The 3X Espressivo takes it up another level. I just don't find this Yamaha tone to my liking but I love the new C3X. That's why I find the tone comparison with a new Feurich not to represent what a new Yamaha C3X would sound like in comparison. I would not like this piano as is and would voice it down a lot. Still, it won't compare that well to a C3X or even later C3 built from say 2002 to 2011.

The C3 is a really excellent instrument. Here's a C3 in concert with orchestra and on which I revoiced the hammers - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnnbpI2da9Obqs0 . That instrument was in an outside performance venue so needed to be slightly brighter than I'd normally voice, and to cut through an orchestra. However Yamaha hammers are very hard so as soon as string grooves appear, there is underlying hardness and conservative refacing and voicing can make an enormous difference. On the Greek instrument I halved the the groove lines and used "liquid voicing" recommended by USA technician Susan Kline just in the centre groove of each hammer.
