Can you have the piano play alone without the speakers

Not if you want digital transfer of the music. In the old days when they were discs, you would slip a disc into the players under the piano (very bulky), now you have to have speakers - wifi- to transfer the music from a data base to the piano. This whole system is great if you have a lot money to spend and if you really think you will spend a lot of time listening to music.
