Great videos! I own a dx7 IIS, but can´t get more than 95-98 velocity out of it....How could I do the transformation for using with Mainstage in live environment? Because logic is not an option for me...thx

I no longer use environments for that stuff. Unless your running older version of MainStage it should have the same MIDI effects as Logic. “Velocity” one should do what you need. BTW see my video on DX7 and DX7II velocity. Below 100 is way too low even for MKI. Unless of course you mean playing comfortably and not beating the crap out of the keybed. :p

Rasheed Thomas thank you my friend. I moved on to playing with upgrades since so maybe grab a couple more videos if curious. I still prefer the DX in its original state, unmodified. Was mostly playing with upgrades out of curiosity. It’s great keyboard. Enjoy.

@@Hedge777 Thanks, im about to make a comeback. My DX7 died last year and I just bought a new one. Loading my old and new patches into it. And from September im gonna. Start uploading stuff again. Aquired an underrated RX7 drum machine too. And the two of them together is like 7th heaven. Yamaha really had something going on with their X range from 83 to 87. And seeing guys like you. MADFAME. And that Japanese dude POWER DX7. Really giving The DX7 and FM its due on here. Has inspired me. I like what you do with the 4 op DX11 too. You have an ability to pull the best out of the classic yamaha synths. And you have a charismatic entertaining way of presenting your videos. Prices on EBAY are rising lol. The real X FACTOR is overhere. Keep up the great work. And check my channel from mid September. Got some cool new patches you and others might like. The passion cannot be contained any longer. PROJECT DX Cool. My DXs are all in tiptop shape but most of them are currently in storage. I’m moving to another country and it’s gonna take me a while to move all of my equipment and assemble a new studio. So you’ll have to carry the torch :-) Speaking of “Brothers In Arms” album. There’s at least three other songs I wanted to cover/ breakdown. Been messing around with Arturia’s Synclavier V. Nailed a few more sounds. Just something to do in between all the beach life and surfing. Heading back home for a few weeks to wrap everything up there so I might be able to knock out another video.

Songs im going to have a go at. BILLIE JEAN--MJ DONT GO--YAZOO BLUE MONDAY--NEW ORDER And then my own compositions. While I was off here. I was at a friends house and he used to own an RX7. I own it now lol. I heard sounds on there that made me realize I.had to have it. And together with the DX7 its formidable. Ive never seen any demos on Yourtube with those 2. And whats funny is you have 777 in you username. I asume because you have three DX7s. Well im very oldschool. And I still sequence with my trusty old QX7 sequencer. So im now a tripple 7 too. DX7 RX7 QX7 Anyway bring on September. Its been 20 months since I uploaded anything. Ive got to build up a base again. Cheers...

how does the aftertouch work? are the setting global or different per patch? like for brasa 1 how do i know how it should sound? my Dx7 is dead and am trying to use Dexed but am trying to match the Modulation and aftertouch.. can you help?

on the original DX7 with stock firmware, it should just work. On the upgraded DX7 or on the mkII there are options for filtering it out. Unfortunately I cannot help you with any kind of repairs from afar. And I'm completely blind so you wouldn't want me tinkering with your DX anyway :-)

@Hedge777 oh no, I don't need it fixed. I just want to be able to use the aftertouch settings in the Dexed but also in the Montage. I don't know what the default settings might be. Are they a global setting or on individual patch?

@@Hedge777 Am sorry, somehow my response didn't get posted. I've mapped the Dexed parameters with the Montage FMX parameters but am short in finding out what the aftertouch setting are... the original patches converted into the Montage have no modulation wheel settings and no aftertouch settings. That is what am looking for.. am close to Syntaur so maybe I'll see if they can fix my DX7. Thanks for your response and the video is great..

well, as you know, DX7 voice data does not contain these settings. Dexed closely replicates it's function page. I'm completely blind now, but I believe it was called Param? I just edit the damn XML file that stores the settings. And I couldn't tell you much about the Montage because I simply don't use it. i'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to find the modulation page and assign whatever you want to aftertouch or mod wheel? That would be RTFM time for me. :-)

Have you ever had "FUNCTION CONTROL MIDI DATA ERROR!" pop up?? I can't use it with my DAW and I can't dump syses onto it. I can't figure out why its doing this for the life of me.

Some synths have a speed control and they can't handle dumps which are too fast

great video, i learned some stuff. why the funky stickers all over the buttons? read in the manual that you shouldn't insert cartridge when powered on, so I didn't dare to try, but you seemed to have no issues. some dx7 stuff on my channel if you are interested. cheers.

Thanks mate, I like funky stickers :p With MKI models removing cartridges while powered on is fine. With MKII (D, FD, S) it is still safe but sometimes the cartridge wouldn’t load properly.

Great video, btw I use Midi Quest to send presets via sysex, but it says to get and initialize the synth you need to dump sysex manually from dx7 , can it be set to auto mode? or should I use dexed to transmit sysex files?

If you can then just use Dexed. Easy to send and receive banks. Easy to browse and easy to preview banks/ voices before sending them to the DX.

Dude, how do you adjust your velocity in LOGIC PRO X? You show the screen, but no idea how to get there, I want to use my old brownie!. You say way to easy, but can you show on logic how you do that, im lost, and want to use my DX7

Karl Zittel I do it the old-fashioned way. Through Logic’s environment. There’s another way to do it. Use instrument track, insert external instrument and then use MIDI FX for velocity processing. I’ll need to do a separate video on that but I’m too far from my studio at the moment. Might be weeks if not months before I get back. So RTFM my friend :-) ‬

Here are some videos I’ve done for the DX7S (which is basically a monotibmral version of the DX7II). Just follow all the steps. Depending on the ROM revision you might not have to enable SysEx (so ignore this step if you don’t see the setting in menus). Also, when setting MIDI channel set it to “1” for both A and B. You seem to be a master at the dx 7 i have a problem maybe you could help me solve it. i have a dx7 2 grey matter e. it seems to be speaking in alien.its like its corrupt.i wanna reformat it can you tell me were to find a program to help me i love this sounds on this thing and a hate to see it go to waste. i have the dx 7 1 as well i love it.

Most of these upgrades go crazy when the backup battery goes dead. Soldering a new one could fix it up. If not there's an additional reset procedure but it is not done from the front panel. You need a tech to do it for ya. Sorry wish I could offer more from here but at the mo' I haven't even got a MKII with E! in it. New battery and a reset should give it a second life though.

Hedge 777 i did the battery replacment on it awhile back even extended the wiring its driving me nuts man lol its just sitting collecting dust i have a cartrage dor it but im not sure is its the orginal when i try to back it up it says protect even though the protect is off. and another thing Does the gray matter e board work on the dx 7 like can a take it out of the 2 and put it in the 1. lol i just wanna put my space helmet on and blast these retro sounds so bad.

They are different boards so theres no way to just swap them between MKI and MKII. If it ain't being voltage-starved and wiring is good then try pulling the E! out. See if the DX works in its original state. You can still find the 1.9 EPROMs on eBay. Easier to test, restore System settings etc.

It’s a layer of STRATO and OBLIVION. Can download the banks here: lucienkblog.wordpress.com/2007/05/13/dx7ii-factory-sounds/ I suggest you use Dexed to play STRATO and a real DX7 to play OBLIVION. Envelopes on the DX behave differently. You can hear it in the vid.

The envelope behaviour is pretty much the same with the DX7IIFD. The SY77 is a different beast. Doesn't load DX patches on its own. Oh yeah and to get the full effect use a sustain pedal. Have fun,
