It is truly a treat to see someone who has mastered their craft play on an instrument that they can just play 100%. If I had a DX7 I would just goof around with it, but the reason that synthesizer was made was for people like him who know how to use it!

I love big analog polysynths of the 70's and 80's...but I have to say...the DX7 definitely had its place in 80's music. Some of my favourite synth sounds came from this board. Excellant demo.
after almost religiously watching many of this channel's videos, I think I finally understand this guy's appeal: he's a total dork, but he makes it look cool. Katsunori's a completely insane musician, but he's too talented & his reflexes too complex for blockbuster pop music. He plays every keyboard like anyone who's ever played a keyboard wishes to god they sounded like: effortlessly flawless dexterity, mastery of any genre at command, understanding of the ebb & flow of every kind of music. You'll never hear this in a top 10 pop song. But all us real music geeks secretly loathe pop for dumbing down the possibilities of music to the masses. So the appeal of Katsunori & the music track KZbin channel? They gleefully don't give a fuck, and they have so much fun not giving a fuck, they make us feel like we reside in a dimension that makes any sense to us geek musicians. I hope you keep making these videos for the duration of human existence. Long live Katsunori!

The Japenese music scene is pretty varied, a lot of the population is also older adults and elderly, who can respect lots of music. He's also done well doing commercial work and other jingles, as well as being a synth programmer/preset maker and demonstrator for Yamaha in the 80's and 90's, 00's. Really what he should be doing is composing more, and I hope he does it for movies/video games.

Sadly, pop music is in the state it's in on purpose. Most people just don't really care for complex music and lyrics. They like simple music because they haven't listened to enough different things to "learn" the simple music and desire more musical "knowledge". It's like they are still in musical 2nd/3rd grade, and they just don't get the more complex stuff. Every time I listen to something more complex than pop music, my wife is like "Why do you listen to that wierd music?" Many pop artists and studio musicians are just as good as this guy, but the market doesn't demand complex music, so they don't make much of it.
I have watched loads of videos of this chap......it's difficult to know if the synth is good or not because he could play the comb-and-paper and it would stir my soul....what a player!

Great demo video for DX7II! By the way, even with the DX7 Mk I, it can produce amazingly warm and rich Oberheim-like synth string and brass sounds (e.g., Van Halen 1984 & Jump). They are all truly amazing ‘pure’ synthesizer (not hybrid synths or romplers). Long live DX7!
@powerdx73838 жыл бұрын
Even without a unison mode or vice stacking, the DX7 MK1 can surprise you with amazing analog-like sound with it's natural flanging effect!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't have two sawtooth wave oscillators, but the DX7 can still manage to create this powerful, fat and rich flanging synth brass sound. If you are interested, please check my KZbin channel. You will learn the true capability and versatility of the DX7 in action!! Cheers, Power DX7.

@Lalaland.0016 жыл бұрын
Zane Wuffy it doesn't come close to the sonic sound quality of a DX 7 I have one of these volca fm's in my studio. I also own the DX7 and the 7IID. The volca does a good job at emulating the fm sound of a DX but somehow sounds flat in a way, kinda hard to describe but it is not as rich/warm as a DX, IMHO. I have compared them side by side and there is a noticeable difference. I think the chipset Korg uses to emulate or reproduce the FM sound icomes close but is not the same as the hardware chipset used in a DX and that makes the difference.
@al.cavalu9 ай бұрын
@@Lalaland.001 You realize that all chipsets are hardware which runs software that implements the various algorithms, right? You can't run software without having hardware to run it on, and the same software algorithm will sound the same on any hardware you run it. The difference you are seeing might be from the DAC, but definitely not from the chipset that runs the software algorithms.

Wayyyy back in 1989 I took some music classes in college, one of them being focused on electronic music and composition. One of the synths in the lab was a DX7IIFD (same as the IID but with a floppy drive for extra patch storage) and I kinda fell in love with it after using it on a few tunes. Kinda amazing to think it was still a relatively new synth at that point (the DX7II models being released in 1987 and even the original DX7 wasn't too far back in history). As the years went on I kinda wanted it back in my life, and did end up picking up a IID a few years ago. (I don't really miss the floppy drive since it's pretty trivial in this day and age to just have patches stored on your PC to send over via MIDI). It's one of my treasured instruments.

@ZaZaZoo22 - It's the famous FM electric piano patch that was extremely popular (to the point of oversaturation) in the 80's. And the most famous (and arguably the "best") one came from the DX7. So yeah, it's very probable. It's funny how this synth is now a collector's item and something to actually -crave- for, back then they were on every corner and people couldn't wait to get rid of them by the end of the decade. ;) A real DX does sound much warmer than emulations (like the FM8).

Had the DX7IIFD and only liked it for how easy it is to program over every other model due to its large LCD screen But I didn't like it for splits or layering. It cuts the polyphony down to 8 voices and the layer just doesn't sound as big as when I midi up my two Mk1 DX7s and run each output separately through my mixer Also, two Mk1 DX7s each maintain their 16 voice polyphony and sound like HEAVEN to my ears I currently have two mint condition Mk1 DX7'S, one TX7 and a DX7S which is where I learned to program on I am a DX7 lover for life!

+Jason Donovan Awesome!! It is so worth getting. Despite the fact I have a pretty large Eurorack Modular setup, SH101 and Prophet 6, I really like just switching it all off and mess with DX7IIFD and TX802 (Layer both of them with Prophet 6). I guess it's the 80's nostalgia. But DX7IIFD sounds really awesome and it actually is not hard to program at all. Just send sounds from it or a MAC/PC to TX802 since that one has less friendly interface. Mine came with the original ROM cartridge and two RAM4 cartridges, and I noticed that RAM4's formatted for DX7II won't work with TX802, they'd have to be reformatted.
@powerdx73838 жыл бұрын
A great thing about the TX802 is that you can have 8 separate outputs for individual audio processing. With 8 multi-timberal capability, it's a great unit. I do all programming via DX7 MK1, then I need to find a better way to transfer all of my awesome DX7 patches to my TX802...

To answer my own question I found out through a comment on Ujiie's demo of the Waldorf Rocket, that it is the (now discontinued) TC Electronic M300 "dual engine processor". If you look closely on a picture of the M300 and the video here I'm now certain he's using a chorus together with a reverb called TC Classic Hall. The M350 which is the improved predecessor is available. I'm getting one of those.

Yamaha DX7 and DX7II are classic instruments, just like Fender Stratocaster is a classic. The only difference is, Fender Stratocaster is still being produced, the DX7 isn't. Which is strange. Hammond organ is being produced, Minimoog Model D is around. The same should be withe DX7 and D-50. Thanks goodness we have eBay. The only place to get real keyboard instruments, still. My favorite ones are the DX7II, D-50, K5, and VZ-1. Various synthesis methods. Unique instruments. Sure, SY77 is great, too, but nothing has its focus on the purity of FM as the DX7. An unadulterated FM synthesizer. D-50 is slightly adulterated with samples, but one can still bypass the samples and use the D-50 as a well featured subtractive synthesizer with four oscillators, variable pulse width, ring modulator, resonant low pass filter, flexible envelopes, 3 LFO's... Let me stop before I start salivating again. And of course Kawai K5 is a paramount representative of additive synthesis (sine waves with 126 harmonics, plus envelope control over all of them!!!), and Casio VZ-1 is phase modulation. Interestingly enough though, DX7 implementation of FM is through phase modulation. And VZ-1's iPD has true frequency modulation, and ring modulator as well. So this intermix of implementations, synthesis concepts, and marketing names can be daunting indeed. Anyway, these are my favorite synthesizers. I also think that Hammond-Suzuki organ is a fantastic additive synthesizer with 9 sine waves and some subtle envelope control through percussion only.

It's the rackmount effect. You can only get that kind of chorus on the DX7 IID by using the Poly Unison mode but then you loose a lot of voices so the sound becomes almost unplayable, if you don't want an almost monofonic sound that is. I'm now buying that effect unit....or the predecessor to be exact.
