YAMAHA JR-1 a.k.a the FG-Junior | RATTLECAN GUITAR RESTORATIONS by James O'Rear

Yamaha JR-1 or the Folk Guitar Junior FG-Junior shows up in the shop today for a little clean/lube/adjust. Based on Yamaha's folk guitar models the JR-1 is a 3/4 scale guitar. A great backpacking/travel guitar because of the low price and for the same reason a decent entry-level instrument for those wanting to try out this whole guitar thing.

Thanks for your advice about the pins, next time I re-string my Yamaha FG 730s I'll use my phone to see if the pins and the strings are the way they suppose to be from inside....

Glad I could help. I discovered this technique when I was working on a kit-built Martin fretless bass and it had no pins but the strings wouldn't come out...turns out there were bolts holding them in place as shown by the phone. Good luck!

Great video. Got me wondering if my strings are set right on my guitar! Gonna have to use the cell phone camera now! Action seemed a bit high on the setup though,, but could just be the video. I'm seriously thinking of buying one of these used for my kid and setting it up myself.

Hey man did you say what gauge you would recommend on these mini guitars? I mean if it's for an adult could you get away with heavy gauge with the lower tension? Assuming the strings fit the nut slots.... I only watched for finging the gauge but wound up seeing a really good instructional vid. Cheers!!

+elklive My understanding is you don't want to go super-light on the strings (i.e. 8s) because of the possible tuning issues. This one had 11s and played nicely and had no tuning issues last I checked.

I have just picked up one of these for my 6 year old son second hand for $25. One of the machine heads has been replaced and another is loose. What would you recommend for me to purchase to replace them all?

Schallers, Grovers, Gotohs. I'd call StewMac and ask what would fit, they'll likely know the answer and have it in stock (then you could price shop it if you wish).

Hey Will a soundhole pickup fit in there of a standard size

Measure the soundhole and compare it to the specs on your pickup in question, should be in the item description...they usually fit a range of sizes.

Hey, what is that blue mat underneath for protection when working on guitars?

That is a VERY specialized piece of equipment that only the finest instrument use. OK, that's not exactly true. It is part of a sleeping mat you use when you go camping. At one time we were huge outdoors people so I have a mess of them and they're pretty cheap as it is.

If there's a Wal-Mart close by go to the camping section and look for a blue foam camping pad. Their brand is Ozark Trails or something like that and it should run you less than $10. Cut it in half and you have two pads. www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trial-Camping-Pad-Blue/16783660
