Yamaha LS2000 test drive 50+mph, left throttle turns, docking with cobra fins

The beginning of this video is a throttle up from no wake to about 50mph in just a few seconds. Man, the dual 1100's in the boat are responsive! 270 horses and a lightweight 7 passenger hull make for some serious performance. I then pull a hard left turn, at 40mph, back up to 50mph on the straight. Then I show a few full throttle turns (with the camera facing different angles) from a stop (a "left throttle turn"), spinning a 360 so tight you can actually see I'm running a circle in my own wake at 30mph! Had I been physically holding the camera (instead of having it in a mount), it would have been lost over the side due to centrifugal force! I then race a 2010 Yamaha VX Deluxe (you'll see it had a several hundred yard head start and I literally catch up and pass it within half a mile), on the way back to the dock. The end of the video is docking using only the idling engines and the assist from the cobra fins I installed on the boat. The dock I have is challenging to get into due to a fishing pier they built right behind my dock, so you can see how well the cobra fins do.

It's a Hella fun boat and surprisingly, really really easy to work on giving both motors have plenty of space between

i realize this is an old video, but for the viewers; coming in hot like that can now be corrected on the newer yamahas as of 2006 because you can drop the inside (port) engine into reverse now (which will pivot the boat to port while slowing down at the same time so you won't bounce off the dock).

On this jet boat, as in most jet boats made after the 1970's, the reverse gate is actually a bucket that comes down and covers the output of the jet thrust. When the bucket is all the way up, all the trust is out the back, and the boat is in forward. When it's all the way down, it directs the thrust underneath the boat, and the boat is in reverse. When it's in the middle, half the thrust is going froward, half backward, so neutral.

No trim adjustment needed on a jet boat. The jet intake never leaves the water because it's so far back on the boat. On PWC's, it's needed because the boat is so short that you could end up with the intake grate partially out of the water. Prop boats need it because the prop angle changes with plane angle.

LOVED, LOVED this boat. But, because of my docking situation it was an incovenient and difficult boat to own. As a result, I rarely took it out. Most years I spent more time washing, waxing, and winterizing than actually enjoying it on the water. Fuel consumption, with the two engines, was significant at full throttle. But, once it was up on plane, you could drop back to 3/4 throttle, still do 40+ mph, and burn half the fuel of full throttle.

I have a LS 2000 was on water when right engin started acting up wouldn't run over 4000 RPM changed fuel filter ran good little bit then acted up again

As I recall, it was about 8 gallons an hour when driven around 40mph. If you ripped along at top speed, you'd go through the entire fuel tank in under 2 hours.

when docking my yamaha i like to approach the dock like you did, except I get a bit hard on reverse & turn toward the dock till almost stopped then if needed turn hard sharp opposite and blip fwd a sec to rotate the ass end in...

Thanks for the quick reply. Haven't checked out one of these in person but do any of these type of jet boats have trim adjustment like a regular prop boat or PWC does?

I'm curious, how is it a direct drive boat has a neutral? Does it throw one reverse gate down and leave the other up? Does it cut the idle down so far it just doesn't thrust? How does this work?

All Yamaha jet boats have known issues. You'll be replacing wear rings in the jet pump periodically. The hoses that carry the oil to the carbs need to be attached better. There are kits to do that, and it is a DIY job. The greatest issue is if you want to let the boat sit for weeks between use, it's hard to get the engines started unless you add a primer kit. Beyond that, the hardware is first rate. Never had anything break on me. The only things I ever replaced were the cupholders, because they are hard to clean, and the locks for the top access panels, because I lost the keys in the garage. I added a depth finder, because it's fairly easy to drive the boat into an area you might not be able to get out of. On plane, you can fly in under 6" of water. When you come off plane, it needs 10" or more.

awesome info buddy thank you,ive always wanted to own an LS2000 they look so fun and exciting,i love that fact thats its jet powered & its a 20ft boat with 2 motors,i think thats very safe,,

+Carry Smith Reliable is somewhat arbitrary but I can tell you next to the Sea Doo/Rotax it's no comparison the Yamahas are the best and you see that reflected in new and used pricing.

I had a 2002 LS for a year, it seemed reliable. The newer Yamaha jets are very reliable too, I had a 2010 SX210 and not a single mechanical issue since new.

@@Spirited_Driver IAM having trouble with Yamaha LS 2000 bought new had on water twice this year and last week right mother wouldn't run right so found 2 oil lines off what's chances putting them back on and it'll be okay.it starts and sounds ok any help or advice.thanks

Right motor running rough could it be gas filter or plugs

First thing I'd check would be the oil lines. If you haven't tied them on with something better than what came from the factory, and they fall off, you'll end up blowing a cylinder. If you find one off, do a compression test of the engine. Second thing I'd check would be the plugs, especially if you haven't replaced them in a while. If you have long periods of no-wake at idle, they foul. Third thing I'd check would be the carb and fuel delivery. If you find there is a problem there, do a compression test of the engine. A lean situation could cause damage to the cylinders.

Hey thanks.i bought this boat new and never had any isuse at all.havent had it on water in6 year's cleaned the fuel tank really good and took it to the lake 2 times ran like new then right engin started acting like something sucked up The jet cleaned it out nothing couldn't get it go over 4000 RPM changed filter on water ran ok for little bit then couldn't keep it running right

@@billdoe6674 2 oil lines off on one engine means the engine is probably trashed at this point. By all means run the compression test, but I'd count on rebuilding it in the near future.

@@craigtiano3455 yea it starts up and reves up good but at idle it shuts off can't seem to find no one to work on that boat around here boat is still like new but thanks for the info u gave me I hooked oil lines back up.
