The Yamaha MODX6 has arrived in the shack and we'll introduce this interesting and significant new synth, do a leisurely unboxing, discuss the features and specifications and then play some of the signature sounds using the new FM-X synthesizer engine. We'll be demonstrating the MODX6, which has the same features as the MODX7 and MODX8, with technology inherited from the flagship Yamaha Montage.
This is the successor to the Yamaha MOXF6 and the Yamaha MOTIF that we have previously featured on the channel!
This is the first in a series of videos about this new synthesizer.

The MODX is exciting but the best thing for me is that your channel has grown to the point where companies are now sending you gear to demo. That's a milestone if there ever was one - Well done, Woody. Thanks for the great demo, exiting to see Montage tech trickle down to an affordable level. It sounds great.

well i was on a 'anologue frenzy' buying lots - I came across woodys channel and enjoyed it and honestly it turned me onto buying some old digital synths dx7 and d550 - his presenting style is unique and enjoyable - very accessable.

Wow! Yamaha really knows "sound" and that's why I have always loved Yamaha! I played a Yamaha Tenor Trombone with an F attachment in High school and it was the most beautiful sounding Trombone I have ever played. That got me hooked on Yamaha Brass instruments. Then in 1989, my Marine Corps buddy bought an original Yamaha DX7 (which I was coveting, but couldn't afford) and that's what got me hooked on their keyboards. Now that I play multiple instruments, I have come to the conclusion that Yamaha pays the most attention to both sound quality and product endurance over time!

Well done on the pre release Woody, so well deserved as you are always the guy to turn to for honest reviews. I love the sound of this thing and am seriously considering which synths - or body parts - I can sell to get hold of one if these!! Like you I’m a massive DX fan, having started out on the good old DX 21 back in the 80s. This synth sounds massive though with those wonderful evolving pads and textures. Looking forward to your future videos in this.

Woody, the only Reface I have is the CP, but if you want to compare its sound against that on any voice, send me a MIDI and I'll record the output on Audacity. I am curious now because you sounded unimpressed with Yamaha's efforts in CP-80 sounds.

Wow!!!!You got one to demo that’s awesome! I liked the montage but just too much $$$$ . So the 7 version , especially as they’ve put a sequencer in this , is now an almost certain purchase for my next main keyboard. Thanks Woody & good on Yamaha for including you (and also for making a keyboard for people like me !:)

I like that. The "new" technology of the montage available in an (more) affordable package. Long video but worthwhile, never boring. One thing though: Is it possible to turn the light effects of the super knob off? Probably the first mod I would be making is getting that RGB led out of there. First impression of the sounds is really good. Really SY territory quality and dynamics. Thank you Woody, and although already subscribed you've got me hooked now for this MODX series.

I love that the audio interface is class compliant - my inference from the "even for iOS" bit in the manual. I recently tried the latest Yamaha model PSR 4xx series arrangers in the local store with my iPad, and it just works, which was pretty cool to be able to layer stuff onto the arranger sounds via the iPad on a single USB line - MIDI out, audio back, or vice versa. Kudos, Yamaha.

Oh yes I'll be waiting ? Waiting for what ? For You're next installment, & in depth look at the new MODX as I too had purchased the MOFX about a week before you reviewed. Which only proved my thoughts were on track. Now I heard about the MODX the other day during my weekly visit at Sonic State. Now Nick refused to spill the secret but he did say he was leaving for New York to attend a Product Revell by Yamaha ? It took me about two minutes to find a leak about the two new Yamaha products and my next logical place to visit was right here of course. I was proud to hear you have been included into the Makers World. Especially when they are sending you pre-release info & an actual product(s) to fiddle with. You looked very happy while exploring the functions on Box Opening day. You're becoming more & more important and respected. It surely happened quite quickly. Time moves quickly doesn't it specifically when we own products that have the ability of tweaking & manipulating , time in relationship to Audio past & present pre & post itself. Keep up the great work & I mean keep up the great work , don't wait months for that Review ? Why and let others beat you to the punch. There is no reason you can't have an initial Review & Revisits at 6 months & 1 year. This could be a test ? The time is now , so please keep that light bright & shinny. I have always been very vocal & against the old practice of giving away brand new Gear to the well known and most visible players. They seldom care little for those things that come their way for free. After all they can afford anything they want. They too just like us, the Celebrity Players love to do the same stuff we enjoy. They like us still do enjoy a bi monthly visit to the local Music Store, to see old friends & other neighborhood players who come in all flavors & levels of ability. Those still struggling & hoping to become as successful as you are in their eyes. They enjoy seeing that you're still a real Human being the store love it too. When I worked at Kawai I convinced them not to offer free gear to Pro for their endorsement. No one believes they're serious users of new products. Instead let's give the public a chance to win one of our many give away's Synth's. which are the products many of them can only hope to buy one day as a used item. I will share the results of that time another time. And Now to think back when you were concerned about that job ? What job ? Oh come on Woody you must remember the one you were laid off from ? and also the one you were ( Not Fired ) from one you could have kept if you were willing to move ? Aha Take on Thee, take on me take it home Karma for keeps. See how the universe works ? You're getting a bit of a taste right now ! you deserve it God be with you as he is. May it last as long as you want. Here's to continued success to you & yours. The family all of them remember to treat them well. Love is all we need. our gear comes second ...

Awsome sounding synth. Looks like a great synth for creating soundtracks and film scores. The combination of FM synthesis with the other synth engine is quite novel. It also feels a bit like a modern wavestation in a way, in how the sounds sort blends and evolves.

Awesome video Woody! I had heard of a possible montage sibling in the pipeline and I was hoping it would be a light weight version of the montage without compromising on the features. And from your video, it looks like MODX is everything we could hope for! I was not aware that this sibling had been released and I was pleasantly surprised to learn about it from your channel. I could not have asked for a better introduction to this BEAST. Looks like it is time for me to upgrade from my lovely MOX keyboard :) Thanks for the introduction Woody. Yamaha chose well!

@@WoodyPianoShack the lack of buttons on the right panel was the first thing that caught my eye. I prefer buttons over a touch screen myself, but looks like Yamaha has given in to what most users have been asking for - a touch screen. I would have preferred they kept the panel buttons too. Still, fingers crossed and I hope that the lack of buttons is not a deal breaker. Looking forward to your review of this machine. Please let us know how comfortable you get at using the touchscreen.

Woody, so pleased for you. Hope this brings you a ton of views. I’d really like to know how the fm basses sound vs awm, particularly how clean they are in the lower octaves. Also the moxf had an annoyance on the cutoff knob as those knobs would step, if you could address how the knobs on the modx are in comparison would be really interesting. Due to the modulation options on the moxf I never found the stepping to be an issue as I would use an expression pedal, lfo or mod wheel for cutoff control live. However, it did bug me that Yamaha didn’t pick it up in design. Also, the moxf has 6 arps for each performance so it could be used similar to an arranger, I.e. moving between verse, chorus, bridge arps - would be interested in what the modx offers, it looks like 4 on the Andertons video I just watched and they referred to them as scenes I believe?
@xyzzer

very curious myself about the arp performences and how they are integrated with the scenes, there are only 4 buttons there. the knobs are "notchy" just like the moxf but I didn't hear any stepping when I played the filters, I'll pay attention to it next time.
@Skijumptoes
@Skijumptoes 5 жыл бұрын
Woody Piano Shack oh so they are still notchy, that's interesting. Perhaps they interpolate between the notches now? If so that's annoying as it could be fixed on moxf via firmware then.

The only thing about Yamaha I have a gripe with is allowing more flexibility to create richer EP's. I loved playing my brother's Roland G8. Those EP's were nuts! Nice video, informative, thanks. Are the keys semi weighted as in, similar to my Novation SL61? When you tap-tested them they sounded lighter but it's hard to compare your video playing through my monitors, vs the real sound that my Novation makes when I try to compare keys. I like my keyboard but the DAW integration on this Yamaha is tempting me to have software sounds AND a keyboard with hundreds of top notch sounds too, as the Novation is just a controller. Any info on this Yammy's keys would be well appreciated. Perhaps just to compare the weight / resistance of the keys to korg triton extreme 76, novation as mentioned, and the light keys found on Roland gear. Could you please provide an in depth look at the keys as the description "semi weighted" is all I have to go on. Thank you and keep up the well made videos!

Congrats on getting your hands on one! Looks pretty nice, does it import DX FD II? That’s the format most of my favorite patches are in. The only “current” tech that reads those still appears to be NI’s FM8. Edit... yes it does, cool

28:25 the sampled piano with the DX7 electric piano is one of the nicest combos I've ever heard.

29:36 Nice little piece you have going there. I'd put a light sax or trumpet lead melody over that and add a chorus part or bridge. Nice sounds.

I can’t wait for mine to get in. Especially since I have this week off... yeah, I’m one of those sorry sods who can and has to work remote. 2 years ago I sold my PSR6xx and MOXF6 and despite getting back a system8 and a JDXA, which I adore! I do miss the MOXF6. I’m sure that the MODX7 will fill that void.

presumably you're being sarcastic, but we did a lot more than just an unboxing in this video... and this is just the intro to set up a series of videos, thanks for the comment though, cheers :)

Woody, no way! This is true: I just went to my mail app to send you the info about this release in case you hadn't seen it. And there was your KZbin notification of your UNBOXING video! I can't wait to hear you demo this beast. Check out the YT Doctor Mix demo. The MODX looks very cool, including some of the Montage fun at a much lower price. For your future demos, I'd really be interested in seeing if you could set up a couple sounds (e.g. pno, ep, org, and synth)and use the faders/Superknob to mix and switch. Thanks for the initial sounds demo; nice stuff. LOVED the second, synth-y patch with arp that you played. And, as always, it's a blast to watch the delight on your face as you play appealing sounds. Cheers, Cliff

Some of those sounds!!!!!!!! Ya know every time I think software is catching hardware up, I hear reverb on sounds like that and then I think not a chance. Those sounds are just gorgeous! Could Omnisphere get even close? OK just finished watching the whole vid and I have a criticism with the synth. They shouldn't make it so easy to get to the best sounds straight away. That means everything else is a step backwards! Not your fault though Woody. Great enjoyable video.. thanks/

Thank you very much! I am trying to decide which keyboard/synth/midi controller for my studio. I have 5000$ CAD to dedicate to this futur instrument and am really struggling. What to do? I want this to one to be my last because I don't have 2 lifetime to spare. I don't want to get something cheap or amateur but I don't need a gigging instrument. I have a Yamaha reface CS synth that I think I can connect to these bigger Synths like the MODX so I need a big keyboard to get the benefit of the full range. What would you recommend? The Kronos, the Nord, the Yamaha, the Roland??? Help! motivated but overwhelm buyer!

Excellent video Woody and as an existing owner a Montage 6, I would be interested to know if the keybed is the same and if the MoDx has the 8 library slots. Look forward to watching more from you on this. 🎷🎹

I'm glad to hear the keys feel better than the MOXF, which I thought were too light. I'd heard rumors of a MOXF replacement earlier this year with Montage features and a touch screen, but I didn't think it was going to actually happen.

these keys are just as light as before, but I think they have a more quality feel, the springiness and bottom-out feels nicer. and the textured finish.

Great first look! Looking into this now as an alternative to the Montage, and to complement the trusty old DX7 of course - it seems Yamaha have struck a good balance between cost/features while still keeping the possibility to dive deep into sound design.

So, with this board would it be posable to do what the MOX does and have a Performance with parts that you can turn on and off and change while you are playing?

I've seen a couple of other demonstration videos about the MODX from the channels I've subscribed. I must say so you far, even this intro so far is the best of them all! It's actually good you had to stay away from this motif bells and whistles as so we could hear the actual sound and not this fuzzy "magic" which has no use in real world.
