Honestly, for me the most important things are the 2 insert effects for each of the 16 parts and that those parts can be fully streamed via usb audio and midi simultaneously. That alone is fantastic for sound design and composing on the fly.

Your gripe with companies having these jazz rock style musicians play just nothing but riffs on their instruments to showcase, is my same gripe with alpt of organ companies. This is why having gospel musicians is crucial because we know how to truly express the instrument at hand

Its a huge upgrade for the 88 key version. Poly aftertouch is a game changer for expression and the second screen is huge for FM and ANX, the synth enginges that can be used together. If you just want this board for pianos i think thats cool, but you're missing out on what this really is and thats a synthesizer for sound design.

Mike Patrick killed that organ demo though! I've been a Korg guy historically and most recently purchased one of those red boards lol (Wave 2)...This is definitely a competitor if you're looking for a do it all workstation that is competitive with the likes of the Nord Stage 4, especially with the sound-shaping options being more accessible with the 2nd screen and physical buttons/knobs (similar to Nord and what Korg lacks with all of their options hidden within the screens). Honestly, they might have even packed more into this thing than Nord has based on sound count, polyphony, and parts. Also, the sound quality seems to be on par or very close to Nord from this demo. I'm still not going to get one (ever), but I definitely think this is a step in the right direction for Yamaha for sure!

Just a quick opinion on the new Montage M8x key action: I own a Nord Stage 3 88-key which I absolutely love, but the M8x GEX action beats it -- it feels like a real grand piano to me. It did take about a full day of playing to settle into it, though.

3 engines. An 'engine' is a way of producing sound. AWM2 is sample based. FMX is an FM synth and the new? AN-X is an old synth from 1997. Each engine is separate from the others. You cannot mix elements from one with another. You can combine sounds from each into one giant sound. That is where the 400 note polyphony comes from. LA synthesis from Roland mixed types. You had samples and generated sound mixed to make an instrument. I thought the next gen would allow that but Yamaha doesn't create new things, they just rehash old tech with more power. Korg reinvents and improves stuff. Their FM take is better, intuitive and easier to get your head around than the 'inventors' of FM. But this new Montage has flashing lights and 10gig of samples. I can't wait for the White or Blue upgrade.

Awesome vid bro. Quick question not related to this particular video but other videos I’ve watched. I’m a nord user so Yamaha won’t be getting coins from me after that purchase lol. But my question was what piano do you use for your nord for live experiences? Do you run stereo? And what tweaks would you recommend to get the best sound? In headphones like the board sounds amazing but I’ve noticed live performance doesn’t sound that great to be honest. So I feel like it may be my setup.

I had thought about doing the same, but when I saw they didn't include poly aftertouch on the M7 on this first iteration I didn't think it would be worth the additional cost to move up to the new model. I know not everyone cares whether or not it has PAT, but that would have been a big selling point for me, along with all the other new display features and the ANx engine.

The reason why I was excited for this keyboard is because they have the ANX engine in it, which is allegedly based on the Yamaha AN1X that I used to own. And up until this point Yamaha has had the most TRASH virtual analog style synth sounds in their workstations (with a couple exceptions in the late 90's) AWM2 was sample based and not fun to program sounds on- so given this announcement I was hoping to hear some demos that really show off what the synth engine can do, but every demo so far I've heard that covers the synth section is very mid. Like one guy playing a pad, adjusting the filter and it sounds brittle. They really should have hired someone who produces hip hop, R&B or funk, who really gets nasty with those synthesizer sounds to show off what it can do. But I'm sure someone will do that in the future I just think that should have been a no-brainer from the start. I really don't care about hearing acoustic piano for the 5000th time

3 Engines, remember the Kronos, 9 engines? Similar concept. I know some of our folks will only play piano on this and say, “But it’s the same as X/Nord is better/I play Keyscape anyway”, if that’s the case you’ve missed the point entirely. I like the evolution of this, but I’m interested in the plugin that’s coming next year, wonder what the pricing will be on that.

Based on what I am seeing and hearing it does appear to be a massive improvement. The GUI has always been "early 2000s" feeling but it seems like a step up and Ive yet to hear another board with better polyphonic aftertouch. Holy cow are some of the degrees of expressions impressive. I still think the Fantom's 808-like sequencer buttons built into it is the best sequencer setup on the market and the Fantom and its GUI is terrific. But its got major polyphony dropout issues and its aftertouch is a total joke. Korgs GUI is awesome at least on the Pa5x I have not used a Kronos, but its more of an arranger and is super expensive. If the new M8x simplified the sequencing, recording, rhythm creation and made it more visual and less text based that alone would be worth it and it seems like its not going to drop any notes with 400 notes of polyphony. Its also got better drawbars than all the others besides the Nord which also serve other functions. The second LCD screen is a huge upgrade and sort of Pa5x but better. I think Im going to pull the trigger on the M8x, with the Pa5x a close second and Fantom 8 third because its now the oldest of the three and has buggy issues I dont think can be solved with firmware. Roland needs to come out with a Fantom 8 2.0 and I think it would be the winner because the way the keyboard is laid out with the 808 like sequencer, pad section etc its great. It just needs a second drawbar GUI like the M8X, legit aftertouch, more polyphony. Its starting to show its age a bit.

After a week I can tell you this keyboard is very powerful, it puts the Kronos nautilus to shame . Don’t listen to 9 vs 3 engines, the korg engines are specialized , you can get any sound you want within the AnX, FMX and aWM . All three together and you’ve got incredible polyphony (400 notes) No keyboard comes close. So you can have a crazy pad going with awm and FMX and have bass and drums / accompaniment patterns all playing without having any voice dropout on your pad. This thing is powerful and I’ve only scratched the surface. The korg, and Kurtzweil are very close to it , the Kurtz may even sound better in a live acoustic venue , but for shear power and accessibility of interface the Montage M blows me we away. Will it replace my 909 , 303, on-6 or MPC ? No but you shoulda heard when I had them all going with Daw . As far as money goes , save for the montage and buy an American made moog while supplies last.

There's no power in a sound bank without midi control... . Still not mentionning any improvement concerning their previous toyish sequencer Since 2 years, i keep telling them along with other guys that reported this major issue to upgrade their sequencer to a fully functional one. if this hasn't been done in the yamaha m series, tones of ppl won't give a toss about geting rid of their previous montage for another sound system. since prehistory, synthesizers arrived with a stupid rec button that evolved over years, with korg, roland, & co. Some trolls have recently pretended that they could use software based sequencers, but what they don't understand is that the osmosis can be lost by moving from a stupid synth to a pc & that some controllers specific to some synths like the knob won't be found in stupid pc softwares. not even mentioning undo & redo to compare after event edition & the stupid transition again from the pc & synth. cuting back full sequencers functions on a synth with todays evolutions of the synthesizers market is immature, companies dont understand they're losing customers by doing this. no event edition ? no section based quantization (with a quantization+volume adaptation for a humanizing new function for piano, to even outpass logic pro's humanize function) ? no section based velocity change with differet curves (including fade in & out) ? no notes transposition with + or -(number of semitones) ? no track section insertion ? no track section copy ? no full track to track copy ? then yamaha can go keep playing with their soundbank without a serious sequencer & go sell it $5000 to the trolls who think there are more explicit sequencers than a korg's one for example in the world of softwares.. yamaha clearly regressed/downgraded their sequencer since the "Motif" experience. if this isn't fixed, i won't say sayonara to modx & the previous one but to yamaha m too. & wait for more serious keyboards to come, from korg for ex
