THANKS FOR THIS PARTICULAR VIDEO...MUST BE A COMMON PROBLEM FOR RACK ES UNITS...VIDEO WAS FUN TO WATCH AND IT FIXED MY UNIT 😀
@cdh792 ай бұрын
Just watched a new video of yours that was in my recommended list and decided to browse through some of your old videos and came across this. Just for clarification, this is the original motif rack, not the motif rack ES. I’m the owner one of those as well for about 20 years and they’re really good sounding devices. I loved it because it was the first unit that I had that I could hook up via USB to my computer and didn’t need to use midi-ports. I really like the sounds they have. I believe original price was around 1200 Euro back then, but they’ve been going around on the used market for a very stable price for a long time already. Edit: I just finished watching the video and like that you resoldered the USB and the other cracked pins as well “while it’s already open”. That’s the right approach for getting loyal customers. Also, yes, there are 2 connectors for expansion boards, which I have as well. They have quite a list of boards that either extend functionality by adding more polyphony or sounds or effects (like woodwind-instruments to more percussion instruments to an analog synthesizer board).

I've worked on a lot of these. It's a very poorly designed board. Glad you sorted it out.

I would have added a short jumper wire on the power jack because it will eventually break again. The jumper wire would allow the unit to continue to work even if/when the solder cracks.

It is basically a rack mount professional midi controlled synthesizer for musicians, hence the steep price ie. a rack mount synth for control via midi without the physical keyboard. This one came out in 2003. Could have been used in a small portable musician rack for band gigs, etc, so bumping and banging around in transit could have broken the solder joints eventually.

Thanks for the tutorial...I followed and fixed my ES rack, it seems that they break at the same place, a bad design there.

Pleased to see you repairing an old music computer!... I like you channel to understand how works issues on my material I could have in my systems. I do music by analogic synths, like Juno6, keybords Fm like Yamaha DX 7, lot old laptops Apple, Windows 3.1 to 10, external racks and sound card, mostly brought used, from the late seventies to 2007, midi keyboards, HiFi amps, this is a complicated system, old, lot of issues, that I have to solve, but I'm not first familar to electronics, what I like are all the pretty sounds I use, so making my machines running well, with also the informatic part ot this system, drivers, compatibility, midi norms, sys communication with old synthetisers, as such how to organize such material... I need to be able to open a computer and repair by myself, and that's funny to see how you solve the problem I have sometimes. Here bad sold, I had the case by past, so I've not microscope tribinocular, I put two glasses on to look all the solds, that's my first job, particularly on those old motherboard with big components that can cut the curent line. Sometime the box have been opened and manipulated, and big capacitors shocked. Sometimes they are not sold properly and cut the curent line under. This is not a big issue in fact. Those music synthetisers in rack are for me a magnificent box with hundred of musical sounds inside, like a treasure, I don't see the technical aspect, so, I am Happy this yamaha will play again his concert grand piano with built in filters to create pretty sounds to play, it's like repairing a guitare.

Some people are technicians, they see circuits, components, have a judgment on the quality of the motherboard, the mounting, for me only the sounds are my interest, so I Know the sounds from this rack, and I hope the owner will use it as the music instrument it is, not to make money.

Hear this passionately demo Yamaha kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpWpqKmZms6ZeM0 Note for my system, one synth means one keyboard, plus one computer, sometime, if not integrated, plus one external midi usb soundcard, and go to external effects coupled with the mixer, then the amp and loudspeakers mostly also an other computer to record the analogic sounds as the midi data. Brainstorming 🤪🤯

I opened up my Motif because the screen stayed blank green. I found that one of the Coils off the switch board supply is broken off. Do you think just soldering the coil back onto its place could fix it?

NO OFFENSE. But. We're Both Specialist But I Need to Remind You. Your tapping the joint with the solder iron and the heat isn't being transferred into the pins. You need to remember to leave the iron on the pin for longer so the pin heats up. Cause your cold soldering

This seems to be an original Motif Rack, not ES. I also have an issue with Motif Rack that is distorting every other note in case they overlap in polyphony. This started after a power cut according to the previous owner. Running the test doesn't reveal anything. Could not find the service manual but Tyros 1 has similar architecture so I used its schematic to try to see what might be an issue. I suspect that one of the shiny sound chips (master or slave is faulty). They are very difficult to replace. I checked the DACs and they are ok. Has anyone got a broken Motif Rack to send me the motherboard anyway? I am happy to pay some £ for it. Thanks.
