Hi, I recently bought one of these that was in need of repairs and thought I could fix it up as a fun project. I have most things up and running except that I'm having some trouble with the tape mechanism. The unit seems to behave strange when trying to play, rewind, or fast forward. It seems to only want to do this for a short period of time then stopping. If I press fast forward, it'll do it for a small period of time but then moves to a slower speed shortly after, then just randomly stops. I've noticed a problem when trying to engage playback where the actual motor controlling the mechanism won't fully engage the pinch roller into the capstan. It seems to need a little encouragement by rotating that particular gear with the smaller belt as it seems to have trouble turning the gear. Not like the belt is loose but more that you can feel the motor trying to turn the gear but having trouble and you can feel these vibrations on the gear as it's being pulsed. I have taken the whole mechanism apart and properly lubricated all the moving parts. I'm not sure where I should look next. Is the one motor just dead or could it be a problem with a controller chip? I'd appreciate any advice you could give! Cheers!

Love your videos, I have acquired a Tascam 424, a Fostex 280, and a Yamaha MT8X I am having the same 10 second problem. We’re you able to find that small belt and repair it? If so where? I would like to see some rebuild vids as companions to the tear down vids, thanks!

Hey, i've got limited experience with the yamaha. 3rd island did a video on it and concluded its the short belt to the reel motor was at fault. I've heard fo people having trouble with getting a good size of belt though. ALso a guy commented on one of my MT8X videos saying he was some hot shit repair guy (and maybe he was, but he wasn't shy about it) and the motor needs to be rebuilt because the brushes get dirty. IS that true? I don't know...but you could try?

I’ve never encountered anything like that. I would guess there is some small object trapped in the tape mechanism. I’d open the unit and visually inspect it.
