Dude, THANK YOU so much!! My Yamaha 50 TLR would start, hit low idle, then die. It was driving me nuts. After I saw your video, I replaced the diaphragm, both gaskets since I was in the area, I figured I would put in a new set, and that dang O-Ring. My motor is a 2007 and that O-Ring was hard as a rock and shiny, it was actually hard to see because it took the shape of the valve thing it was on. As a matter of fact, the O-Ring broke getting it out. I put on the new O-Ring and put everything back together. Probably a 20 minute job. My engine starts and runs perfectly. The Prime Start hasn't worked this good since 2007 and I keep an extra O ring in my parts now if it ever acts up again. Thank you for helping me out! YAMAHA Part # 67F-14398-20 $5.00

I have a 50 TLRB Yamaha outboard. I rebuilt the carburetors, replaced the coils, new plugs, new left pump, rebuilt the prime start system, tested the prime Start solenoid, replace the fuel tank, replace the primer bulb, adjusted the linkages and resynchronized the CDI and the engine will not cold start without putting the prime start red lever in emergency mode. Once the engine is started on emergency mode it will start just fine for the rest of the day. It also smokes a lot when running it off the hose and fills the barn with smoke. The plugs are getting somewhat fouled out but not enough to make it run poorly. I must have had the carburetors off and on about 10 times double checking everything. Any ideas?

Check the o ring on the prime start. Make sure its just right.

@@sanitymaintenance573 just pulled the prime start apart. When I rebuilt the PrimeStart and installed the new diaphragm I guess I never had the reed valves out. Just pulled out the black circular plastic and sure enough the o-ring behind it was disintegrated.

@@danczuba if you are running ethanol fuel it will destroy them about every year. You can replace it with a ac green o ring and it will last longer. There a little thicker and harder to put back together.

@@sanitymaintenance573 I only run rec fuel. I used a Viton O-ring with a dab of oil. It went together firmly, so I know it sealed. I pulled the plugs and cleaned them(they are almost brand new), and it runs better. Doesn't smoke as much. It's still hard starting when cold. It only starts when I use the emergency position one the fuel enrichment. After the first start of the day, it starts right up on fast idle; then settles down...so I know the solenoid is working(plus I bench tested it). When the motor is cold, it's like it's not getting enough fuel; so then I have to use the enrichment lever to get it running. Once running, I can immediately switch the enrichment lever back to normal.

Great video, my choke unit wasn’t connected when I bought my mariner 50hp 4 stroke, was fine on the first outing when I tried it, so I found the wires and reconnected and I seem to be getting running issues now, would that be causing the problem?

Thanks for these videos! I have a 04 Yamaha 90 2 stroke. The engine was working great started just fine. I just bought the boat so I decide to clean the carbs and afterwards I could not get the motor to fire up. I’ve started tracing down problems and I think I’ve narrowed it down to the prime start. When I turn the motor in emergency fuel enrichment I can get the engine to start up. And once it’s ram I can turn it on in normal mode. Could this be the failed o ring or possibly a failed starter solenoid.

Might be a stuck solenoid not letting any fuel in ??

@@sanitymaintenance573 I took the solenoid out the pin moves up and down freely. I think this afternoon I’m going to check the o ring and if that’s good i may just buy a new solenoid and see if that fixes it
