Yamaha Pac611HFM Pacifica Guitar Demo & Review
Yamaha. The common man thinks about ATVs, motorcycles, and sports gear when Yamaha is mentioned -- not guitarists and musicians! Yamaha makes stellar musical instruments, and this Yamaha Pacifica 611hfm guitar is no exception.
Played through a Blackstar HT-20 amplifier and Avatar Vintage 2x12 cab on clean and overdrive settings, take a listen to how this Yamaha Pacifica 611 in transparent black finish with Seymour Duncan SP90 and Custom 5 pickups performs in a variety of tonal applications.
This Pacifica excels at modern tones, including rock and fusion. It's a great axe for those interested in a versatile guitar that can cut through a mix at live shows and provide cutting lead tones for lead guitar work.

Thanks for this, Matt. I am ordering one of these, made up my mind before watching your vid. I already have a Yamaha RS620, and I cannot believe the build quality. I mean seriously, if Yamaha can put out such quality fit and finish for well under $1000, what the heck is up with so many other brands? Looking forward to my new PAC611HFM.

Yamaha is the largest producer of musical instruments in the world.. I don’t know how it happened but now that I think of it, I have five Yamaha guitars right now. a pacifica112, a Pacifica 312, an acoustic six string, a fourth string bass guitar… and a Yamaha, AES 800 electric. I saw photos of Sammy Hagar performing on stage playing my exact Yamaha AES 800 years ago. Just for the heck of it, I go on eBay every once in a while and check to see what some of the guitars I own are selling for used. I was very surprised to see that the Yamaha AES 800 that I have had since around 2002, They are now selling used for over $2000. I can understand why. It is well-made. It stays in tune, the next, or straight, there was no Fret sprout., i’ve never had any issues with scratchy pots, fret, buzz, Neck inlays, falling out, It has the original fantastic DiMarzio pick ups, three pots.. volume, tone, phase. You can change the face by rotating the third rheostat. I’ve never seen that on any other guitar. It has quite a change in the sound, more drastic than turning the tone control… 2 pick ups, five way selector.. rosewood, fingerboard, single cutaway, solid, body, maple neck, string through. I do not understand companies selling “Road worn “guitars that are all purposely damaged. Actually, I can understand that, instead of throwing them in the trash, where they belong when they get damaged, while being made, they just turn a liability into an asset and call those Guitars “road worn like it’s something great.. I have had some guitars since the 1960s until now, and they are not worn like that. My fender 1959 jazz master did have a very fragile paint job like Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar. That paint just chips off very easily. my Omahas are good, solid Guitars. To tell you the truth, there are not many companies, making poor quality Guitars, there are some, the fender, Squier bullet, and there’s another model of a cell begins with an a I think. I don’t think anyone would like one of those guitars they are not made to a standard, they’re made to a price. But one of my cheap guitars is an epiphone les balls special. Painted flat black with black P 90s. It’s the one with two pots, they saw another version with four pots. That is a different guitar that gets very good ratings. But I have the one that sold for $189 new. I got it for 50 bucks on craigslist. It’s in perfect condition. it plays better than my gibson les paul classic. It won’t stay in tune, I need to change the tuners, which I was resisting, because the tuners were cost more than I paid for the guitar.. but this guitar just comes alive when I play it. Not all many guitars do. In fact, this is guitar I never put back in its coffin. I play it every day. When I sit down in my La-Z-Boy to watch TV at night, I pick that guitar up, and I play it without having it plugged in. I probably play it more than seven hours a week. I just got done watching the 2024 NFL player draft first day. I played my Les Paul P90 $50 guitar for 3 1/2 hours while I was watching the show. if only I could play a song. I haven’t played an entire song since I stopped playing in the bands. I got sick of getting home at 4 AM smelling like an ashtray, and then having to go to work the next morning at 7 AM sometimes.. I just practice my range and licks and runs.. I never had a guitar lesson. Just like Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, two of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and quite a few others that can’t read a note.. I was told years ago, when you take lessons, you can only learn what the teacher knows.. So you better have a great teacher. But one thing, a teacher can’t teach you, is desire.

The Custom 5 is a bright humbucker. Many far Eastern pickups tend to get lost in a band mix for some reason, so I suppose Yamaha went on the bright side to counteract this. Blackstar like Marshall tend to be bright amps anyway. Guitar sounds excellent in this video though.

You articulated exactly what I have been thinking about this guitar since listening to several reviews and plays by multiple players. It's just too bright no matter what you do to tamp that sound down. I had been really considering purchasing this guitar, however, I am more convinced now than ever that I would regret doing so. As you say, it comes to personal choice of sound. In addition, love the locking tuners, the combination of pickups, and the overall quality of the guitar. But in the end, it's all about how it sounds. Wonder if the 4 series without the lamination would be less bright. But of course, you also get less guitar. The search continues.

I hear you bro. IMHO and experience, it’s the alder body capped with maple top plus the 500k pot that makes this guitar really bright. The 9 gauge string that it comes with doesn’t help either. I always go for a heavier string if I find the guitar too bright. I wish they make a mahogany body with maple top, ebony fingerboard, plus reversed headstock version! An example would be With Ibanez Andy Timmons models, although both share the same model of pick ups, same scale length, you can tell straight away that the mahogany version is much warmer than his standard version. Thanks to the hog body! Anyway, this 611 Pacifica model is still very good value, considering the specs and build quality you get for. I’ll take this one over a Mexico fender anyway. I’ll just a change the strings to a heavier strings with no coating! If I could find one, I would most likely put a lefty neck to get a reversed headstock on it. Cheers!!!

@8:30 those pole pieces are definitely not from the stock Duncan P90 that Yamaha uses. These look like a Jazzmaster rod-style magnet, which would inherently increase the overall snap, brightness, and attack of that pickup. That likely is contributing to the overall bright characteristic of the guitar.
