Hi Woody good video as usual. I have seen a demo of this keyboard at a local dealer with a Yamaha pro doing the demo. I know he was trying to sell us one of these, part of the spele he told us was that the intros and fills etc were far removed from the Psr 970 ( I bought a Psr970 too in a sale last January) and far more usable and based on the ones on the Genos. It will be interesting to see if you find that, by the way the demo guys seem to target older customers, a lot are interested in the old types of music the younger guys do not play. I like quite a lot of modern music and like jazz and blues, I also have a Roland FP30 Piano I bought recently, I sold my Yamaha XF7 synth to raise the money. I am also learning to play guitar, at my age (71) I need to keep my little grey cells active.

One thing that I've not seen in many reviews, and it is that this keyboard comes with Bluetooth. I found it particularly helpful to play along with songs from KZbin that I play on my cellphone. Do it a lot with backing tracks and also record some of the performances.

I would absolutely pick the MODX, assuming I also got to take some audio solution to make up for the lack of built-in speakers. At these prices, I shouldn't have to choose between them. It would not be hard for Yamaha to combine the functionality of each into one synth / arranger combo. The fact that a Genos II costs so much more than a Montage but lacks synthesizer features is particularly ridiculous. I think the MODX has enough arranger features that I wouldn't miss the difference between that and a PSR-SX900. Plus, you can get the MODX8 or 8+ with 88 weighted keys... something I appreciate since I detest the feel of most non-weighted keyboards.

I really want to be able to play an actual piano (as well as a keyboard), so I got an MODX with 88 weighted keys to that end, rather than the PSR. I'm still glad I made that choice, as I can still get amazing keyboard sounds, and at the same time input my ipad (Cubasis DAW, or myriad Apps), PC (DAW, vsts, self created backing tracks etc), Looper, and all my acoustic instruments directly into the back of my MODX. I do have an old PSR (my first intro to keyboards) and it is still a lot of fun, but overall I now get more satisfaction from making my own tracks and learning to play both hands, arrange music etc. I guess it depends on where you are in your musical journey, and your ambitions as to which keyboard is going to best for you.

This keyboard looks like a lot of fun! And to build on other comments and share my humble little opinion on the matter. Who cares if someone uses an arranger keyboard for something like drums? A lot of us are just sequencing drum samples in a step sequencer/piano roll anyways. Maybe if they were using it for something like heavy metal and its myriad subgenres, I'd understand the dislike. At the end of the day, the only thing that should matter is if it helped you make music or not. EDIT: I feel like I should go more in depth on my metal comment. For those of you that aren't aware, there's a debate about using drum samples in metal. I'm personally in favor of it if you're a bedroom musician/making a demo or other circumstances.

I don't miss them at all when playing 61 key arranger or synths because I don't use the whole range on that type of keyboard, on a digital piano I like to step up to 73 or 88.

7:02 Actually a chord looper was more or less standard on Yamaha keyboards from the late 80's and 90's. Kind strange the feature got dropped. There is a other feature found on some late 80's Yamaha's that seems to be missing in action for quite some time now. When active the keyboard started to play something like horn stabs or a melodic fill whenever you stopped playing the right hand lead sound for a bit. I always found this a nice and musically useful feature.

@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you Woody ... I just wish there was a way to have the reverb at zero by default for every instrument selected. I agree with your physical button and fader comment. The 970/975 was nice in having physical buttons right below the mixer levels (which can be visible onscreen at all times, for real-time control). It’s too cumbersome on the SX900 to 1) pull up mixer screen, 2) tap a channel and 3) adjust with your finger (with difficulty). Too fiddly, and impossible in the moment. Hey, could I use a small MIDI controller with actual faders (ex/ KORG nanoKontrol 2) to get real faders? Maybe Velcro it below the screen. (You probably have some Velcro left over from the S970 monitor attachment). How about a demo, showing how to use a MIDI controller for faders and knobs on the SX900 (you’ll need them on the desert island). Cheerio!

Your desert Island instrument opinion may swing back to the MODX when MODX os 2.0 becomes available on the 24th of October. The new os brings extensive sequencer capabilities to the MODX, as well as a VCF Mini Filter, Mini Booster, Wave Fodder. I still think (like I commented on one of your earlier videos) that combining this with the MODX is golden. Put it on a 2 tier keyboard stand and play( or sync) them together. :) For me the sound editing capabilities are the most important. For some reason I was less impressed with the piano sounds of the PSR SX900. I thought they had the same sample in it as the MODX but It is probably with less dynamic layers.

I tried one for the first time today. Put a Shure 58 in the mic jack and tried the vocal 'thing' ..Horrible. I have a 970 and a Korg PA 600 (as well as an old PSR 3000). I play about 20-24 gigs a month with the 2 board setup. The Vocal Harmonizer on the 970 is next to useless, and I use a Digitech box (I am a solo act). The 970 has buttons, the Korg has a touch screen. Gimme the buttons any day. watching your video is the most down to earth and realistic one yet. I was so blown away and impressed by the improvements in sampling of the drums, and tweaking of the of the styles. I had listened to your assessment of the touch screen on the SX900, but the demonstrator on the screen seemed fairly relaxed with it. So, tell me please, how serious do you think this problem of working with the touch screen as a gigging musician really is? If I'm working with a worship band as I do quite often, the styles wouldn't make much difference as, under those circumstances, mostly if I'm working there I'm not competing with drums, guitars and basses. Under those circumstances,I use free styles to create an envelope, and my right hand works extremely well for ad libs, and solo work, etcetera. But, as a gigging musician I go all out, using styles, intros, and endings, making modifications all the time. As I told you before,I really want to get one of these keyboards. Thanks for your input Woody.

What do I have to choose for now my dear Woody, a very important moment to me! A Psr s975 or a Psr sx900? Please tell me which one : the 975 ( new, in the box ) or the sx 900 ?! I have to decide before Monday and I’m going to choose what you recommend me! I respect your knowledge and ideas! Thank you Woody!

@@Ronny-Summer depends of course what features are important to you and your budget. me, i'd get the 975 save $$$ and use it to buy a piano! wgat's the price difference in your case?
@Ronny-Summer4 жыл бұрын
The price difference is €300 for me. The sx900 is a very young demo-keyboard. I’m sorry to say but I can’t play piano and really want one of these two keyboards ( I am 62 and have some broken nerve-systemen my hands ( diabetic poly neuropathy 😖) ) so this one is going to be with me for a longer time now. You know, Woody, I’m a bit afraid of the small touchscreen, is that good enough to replace the one from the 975? I’ve seen it for a too short time. And what is the importance of the 3th voice? ‘That’ important? You had the 975 for some time and you know it. The sx900 was fast away .... I know your love for real synths but that’s not for this layman though I love them but can’t play them. Sorry for long story .. I keep watching your video’s , from the beginning I did that because I like your unique way of presenting, a great performer and always a pleasure to watch! 😀👍. Now, what shall I do? Thank you for your quick reply ! Have a nice evening!

we want to hear a demo of the VH2 harmonizer in trio modes and tracking when power singing dropouts vsv TC helicon...has it been updated from previous models?
@WoodyPianoShack5 жыл бұрын
power singing dropouts? I don't even know what that is, I might be the wrong guy for that demo... :)
@ConeyIsland19525 жыл бұрын
Woody I am a power single act...playing an arranger and singing almost every song.. when VH2 is used on a Yamaha you have to sing directly on the mic center or you get dropouts especially using trio VH settings..a power singer is someone who is simply a very strong vocalist when playing. The TC helicon units used on Korg, or separate units has superb tracking at any angle your on the mic...hope this helps explain.
@stevedavies43205 жыл бұрын
@@ConeyIsland1952 I asked Yamaha, if the Harmonizer had been upgraded because the one on my 970 is rubbish and so was my PSR 3000. \they said it's the same system from the 970.. The Korg PA 1000 has the TC helicon which is a great. It's a pity the Korg is not very friendly in a live situation. I play a Korg 600 and the touch screen isn't the 'great thing' people would like you to believe. I'll stay with my 970, or get a 975. They should be discounted soon.

acoustic piano is fine imho, gets the job done but not quite as rich as the MODX for example.

I think the e-piano sounds in MODX are better because they have an FM chip built in. Especially the DX - typical FM -Pianos this is of course an advantage.

I bought an sx700 and if I were to compare it to my Technics GA1 organ.. You play the organ but the sx-700 plays you.. So if I want to just thump away then goto sx-700 but if I want to express myself then I go to the GA1 organ.

I have always been a Yamaha user and fan but one thing I have noticed is they never give you much more in the next model up but do charge a lot more. WHY IS THAT? I think it is Marketing and they don't want to give it all away because it takes time to develop something that sounds better than a Casio.
