First keyboard I got in 1988 was the PSS 460, it was originally a Christmas gift for my brother but he was more interested in the guitar so he let me have it, it's the only keyboard I've ever owned and I still gig with it today and it still works just as good as it did the day I unwrapped it, this keyboard literally has everything that a songwriter and composer needs

that is amazing! I'm sure 99.9% of the former owners never realized this keyboard could make such cool sounds. Or maybe they found that ghostly brass from outer space and their parents hid their synth in the basement. I'ts fun to think how engineers were paid to build those sounds simulating instruments but decades later musicians are only worried about how to destroy it until it sounds like the cool fm synth is hidden behind this "user friendly" interface.

The other day I saw one of these up for silent auction at a thrift store near my house. I didn't even research it: I just put a bid in. I thrifted a PSS-460 last summer and ended up recording a three-song EP with it. It was my first synthesizer so it's quite special to me. Now that I've seen this video, I am dying to win the PSS-480! It's clear to me that this model outclasses the 460 by a large margin. Thank you for making this fantastic video series. I'll update this comment once the auction ends. Here's hoping I can snag it. EDIT: I won it! So excited.

Terrific explanation of this synth and of 2-operator FM. I'm quite fond of this machine, as sort of the end of when consumer-targeted portable keyboards were still synthesizers, and not just PCM playback engines. Thanks for taking the time. I picked up my PSS-480 without box or manual from a pawn shop maybe a decade ago, and have in that time managed to break the low G key, though everything else works. (Need to see about replacing the plastic key.) I've used it both as a MIDI controller and as a sound module, working with the rest of my cheap studio.

I got this after many years begging my parents (like 4, we didn't have much money, prolly if Dad had let me work but nope, he said school was my job) to buy me a keyboard. This beauty gave me many many MANY hours of fun and satisfaction and got me through teenage depression and college stress and pressure, this keyboard is one of my most precious treasures and I still have it with its box after and it works still beautifully even though I have other more "newer" instruments but I keep it as a trophy and as a reminder of patience and great memories and for that I'm so thankful! I bought one of these brand new in 1987 for a lot of money. I think about £100. It was my first keyboard. I also bought a Foster X-15 second hand for £250. I then traded it for a 560. Then I traded that for the amazing looking and sounding 680. The 680 was a massive step up when I got it It had far superior drums and also had quantizing. It did not have FM synthesiser, but I think the sounds were still synthesized rather than sampled. I'm pretty sure portamento was unfortunately taken away in the 680.

Superb video👌These PSS boards were my first foray into synths, one of our lecturers bought a PSS 680 around 1990 for our uni band, it changed everything, since it could be made to do ANYTHING (DX7 tones, and more -). They remain truly phenomenal value and versatility these mini keys -FM synth, sequencer/ drum machine to full featured MIDI controller ( @32:50 to end 👍) . I still have a PSS 780 and PSS 680 (through a QY10,etc)), and i it is a bit of a let-down that the modern reissues ( Yamaha Reface series) kind of miss the mark in comparison.

If I'm correct all the hidden parameter can be changed using MIDI using sysex si no easy way to use an external controller that can't be programmed with complex interaction. And great demonstration of that under-rated keyboard! Got mine not that long ago for dirty cheap because of MIDI, I really enjoy it but still find internal patches to be less interesting than a PSS-280/290/26 that albeit using the same 2op FM, they tend to use more than one channel per note so can do more complex sounds with some of the 4 or more algotithm as long as there is no more than 2 op in a single chain, and the OPK is actually stereo and not mono like the one used int he 480 and related, but yet still a great keyboard! Also it funnily react to velocity when set in the right midi mode, even if the keybed itself do not provide velocity, that always amazed me :D Can't wait to see part 2! Edit: It's actually a 580 I do have, but that's essentially the same keyboard with the preset ordered in a slightly different way on the front panel, but in the same order on the MIDI side. Go figure!

This was my first semi pro midi workstation and I used the heck out of the sequencer and synth to compose my songs. The trick to make ONE song that can be used quite effectively in a mix is to record a bass line that will end at a good LOOPING point, a repetitive stanza with either ONE track(monophonic), or 2 or 3 tracks combined(2 or 3 note polyphonic this way), and making sure you end on the RIGHT NOTE to allow a good looping point on those other tracks too. You make your custom drummer drum pattern and have that enabled and lastly you BRING it all together in a song by selecting CHORD track 1 as the final track to record, BUT do not, press ANY KEYS!! Just start the recording by selecting the bassline, to come in on time as soon as you press the start button, and start punching in and out, the various tracks you recorded, in time to loop you song parts together like a live remixer tool. NOTE there are 255 total note events memory so bare that in mind! The song recording can be ended when you have had a nice repeating groove that can end on a good looping point, and then the recorded song will play endlessly, looping your mix. You can then add or augment this with external synths controlled by these tracks set to each midi channel that corresponds to the tracks recorded. So if bass line track 1 of the melody tracks is Midi channel 1, then set a external midi synth you want to ADD more bass tone to, to midi receive channel 1, and so on. Remember that if you select more than ONE melody track to record on, those groups of tracks become ONE midi channel and polyphonic. This keyboard IS a one hit wonder tool that can be lots of fun for years as I can attest to. BUT one thing to keep in mind, the contents will erase slowly if no batteries are left in the unit and the unit is unplugged.. ONLY, if the unit is UNPLUGGED!!! This means, YOU DO NOT, have to leave batteries in the unit if your keyboard is PLUGGED IN the wall and shut off!! Just make sure you plug into a UPS like with a computer, and you have your contents saved between sessions! ANOTHER THING: This unit is very powerful in terms of MIDI so if you want to SAVE your contents outside the keyboard so you can reload it as needed, you CAN with the midi dump feature! For best results, USE A YAMAHA PRODUCED COMPUTER SOFTWARE DAW OR MIDI FILER SOFTWARE!!. I found out the hard way, that not all midi software will receive and transmit YAMAHA sysex midi data correctly and will corrupt as well as possibly corrupt your receiving unit(YAMAHA AN200 OS upgrade failed on me 3 times until I figured out the issue). I use YAMAHA XGWORKS 3.17 studio which is FREE from YAMAHA right now, as it supports PLG and AN/DX synths. The sequencer in that software works almost seemlessly with these older YAMAHA branded units. The PSS480/680 for sure! Your RAM size in the Yamaha PSS480/680 is 64Kb as denoted ON the motherboard of the keyboard NEXT to the RAM chip.

I already have patches for the bum bu bum and the doo wee oo. I used the portamento on the doo wee oo. It's the only use for portamento I have found so far. And to add the cherry on top I added some dely from my mixer. It's not bad at all compared to the original done on a Yamaha CS-80. Given the small size of the keyboard I play it via MIDI from my Radio Shack Concertmate. So I these keyboards are worth picking if the price is right. EDIT TO ADD I had no idea you could adjust the portamento. Glad I found your video.

I would soon translate many of my compositions using that keyboard into music tracker modules on my Commodore Amiga A500. Later, that became easier once I got a MIDI interface and migrated from Sound/Noise Tracker to MED/OctaMED software (which supported MIDI) on that same device. Sigh! The good old days. If Yamaha made a new portable keyboard of a similar size as this one that has automatic accompaniments (plus a simple sequencer for making custom ones) and a simple feature for editing and creating voices with three modes (FM like this one, analog filters, and built-in samples on which one could add an effect and a filter) and set an affordable price for it (similar to current beginner keyboards of the brand), I am very sure that it would sell really well. I imagine such a keyboard to have a similar design style as the current PSS series (like A50) and to be part of that series.
