Yamaha RY8 drum machine review & RY30 info

I just bought a Yamaha RY8 drum machine for US$30. This is a great little drum machine. Easy to use, good sounds, interesting functions, and its got midi I/O.
Later in the video I go through some Yamaha RY30 sounds. So you can compare the sounds yourself. Both are great items. The RY30 is obviously much more powerful in all that it can do.

Nice video although the sound is distorted. I once got to try the RY9 in early 1999 which was very similar. I personally own the RY30 and RM50, along with every expansion card set, and both are bits of gear. I've tried so many different drum machines from the 1980s, 1990s and beyond but nothing beats the RY30 in my opinion. Last year for a bit of fun I bought a YMC10 MIDI FSK Sync Converter, and connected my RY30 to my old Yamaha SY55 keyboard and Yamaha MT3X cassette four track. It worked first time with no hassle at all, and a simple press of the SY55 sequencer play / record button and the RY30 and MT3X all locked into sync. If only I had owned a sync box back in 1990 as the possibilities would have been endless!

Hi my friend I bought one of these with no instructions it does work but how do I get it to play the drums for me in the background as I play the piano?? I'm really not sure what to press to try and get it to keep a Beat for me whilst I play ....plse would you be kind enough to tell me the sequence of what buttons to press etc put on first.. big thanks in advanced

Hi, can you use the Ry8 or Ry30 as a midi sequencer? That it will output the midi notes from the pattern and trigger for example SU10. I am looking for something easy that I could use to sequence a sampler with custom hits. Thanks! :)

sounds better than my Garage Band sounds...I wish I could tone the snare, but it is still better than my Garage Band built in sounds...way more impact..

Thank you so much for this informative video. Really appreciate it. I m willing on purchasing one at 50euros. But i also found a QY10 for 60euros. Do you think its a better device than RY8? Does it worth the 10euros more? I will use it as drum machine and midi alongside with my Yamaha CS6x and M Audio Venom (both have midi in/out). I Feel/think that RY8 may be better and seems to have more drum sound. What do you suggest? Thank you
