EDIT: Quick correction. Thanks to Reddit user acreil for pointing this out - the FS1R and the PLG100-SG don't *actually* use filters, it's just its own type of synthesis if you look at the patent (US5138927A). The correct lines in the video (from what I know) should be: 11:22 "Both of these oscillators are then used to synthesize the final sound (...)" 11:48 "...along with individual control over each oscillator..." Hopefully what I said in the video gets the point across, but lesson learned: anytime you're talking about synthesis, check the patents to be sure! Reupload due to copyright issues. Thanks to Universal Media Group for making a false claim (song claimed was never used in the video) AND violating fair use. A correction on IBM's experiments, the IBM 7094 was not used, it was the IBM 704. This is because the 7094 came out in 1962, The IBM 704 came out in 1954. Due to this, it would have been impossible for the 7094 to sing Daisy bell in 1960.

Discovered this video when searching for PLG-100VL, and loved it. Wrote a snippet supporting decoding PLG-100SG vocals later.

I'm wondering how much formant customization is possible without having to use the software: Let's say I just want to make the SG produce a fixed "ooeeoo" upon a NoteOn. Is this configuration possible using just the face buttons or maybe live with midi CC commands?

Interesting stuff. Was thinking about buying the Korg Miku the other day, but I think the novelty wears off quickly. Good to know about this Thing.

I think the free VST AquesTone uses the same or similar vocal synthesis methods

Whoa, this sounds a LOT like Dee Klatt (another formant synthesizer). Take a listen to the voices on "Garden of Delete" by OPN. That sibilance especially...

"notes need to be a little early sometimes" okay yeah thats EXACTLY like chipspeech. can this board also be played on a MIDI controller in real-time??
@enderjed25232 жыл бұрын
@@imlxh7126 Yet ironically, the technology behind the PLG100-SG is closer to the VOSIM oscillator than the DECTALK based Dee Klatt, but I cannot deny they sound incredibly similar.

I actually know Haru yo Koi from listening to Hatsune Miku. Someone remade this song in the Vocaloid software.

I can only help, but wonder how it would would with 2 or 3 of them in a MU1000/MU2000 you could then pan one hard left/right/center amount other things. Though technically you could export it with edits to wave and combine 2 or more wave files with different edits applied to each to get a much more broader dynamic and layered sound than a single card could do otherwise.
@SpeedySPCFan5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if you want to enhance the sound like that, it would be far more economical to use the FX section built into the MU1000 to do things like chorus, reverb, lo-fi, etc. I don't think I've ever used my PLG100-SG bare. That said I would love to see the results of layering multiple boards!

Any hints to where to find the software editors for this?

Google search "yamaha sol2 archive.org" and click the first result. Install the main program (SOL 2) and then make sure you install the PLG100-SG add-on included on one of the disc images. I think you might be able to find a copy of XGworks 3.0 somewhere else and install the PLG100-SG add-on on Yamaha Japan's site, but I have no idea how well that works. Also, no matter what you do, make sure you have some way of using Japanese AppLocale so the program actually works and doesn't give you gibberish characters. You also need a Japanese language keyboard installed - Windows has built in support for multiple keyboards, just get that set up and you're good to go!

Vocaloid could have been big, but it was lacking in decent English voices, compared to the Japanese options, so whilst it appealed to J-Pop fans, it was limited in pop-culture.

I kind of want one to add to my motif es for some unique synth leads or maybe even some weird robo chorale. Do you think it has usable sounds if you're not looking for realistic speech synthesis? Also, I could not find much info about the polyphony, I know my VL is monophonic but what about the SG?
@SpeedySPCFan4 жыл бұрын
There's definitely some usable sounds there for that! If you program your own you can do some wild things with it too, it's nothing really versatile but it is unique. And, it's monophonic only. There's no way to get polyphony on it.
@TheGrelots4 жыл бұрын
@@SpeedySPCFan Thanks for the info, they seem to have raised in price since you've made the video but I'll be on the lookout.

@@TheGrelots Just be patient, there was one sold on July 10th for $100 on eBay - board only but still!! There's always really overpriced listings out there for some reason, but past auctions like that usually reflect the true value of a synth.
