Yamaha started making electric guitars in 1967, and some of the first ones they produced were these wild Flying Samurai models. This one dates to 1968 and features one of the most intensely flamed made necks we’ve ever seen around here. Surf music was huge in Japan in the sixties, so this takes cues from Jaguars and Mosrites, but copies no-one and delivers a tone and feel completely unique to Yamaha. It seems a matter of time til one of these lands in the hands of some prominent indie superstar and the values skyrocket, but hey, in the meantime, these are exceptionally cool little gems from the sixties you can score for a great dime.

I had a chance to borrow my friend's SG3 for some weeks, used it for gigging and rehearsal. Amazed by every single aspects of it, probably the same applied to the SG2a. The look, the wood, craftsmanship, hardware, and of course the tone is top notch! Stay in tune really well too, great for grunge, surf, reggae, everything really. I was a bit skeptical about all the vintage yamaha guitar trend, now I am joining the cult, don't even have one yet. (Eye-ing on my friend SG3 or a SG2a with sunburst color at Melbourne FB's marketplace). Cheers

Fuck man I’ve primarily heard this guitar played in a surf context. Hearing a more blues style has me digging it even more. Great relaxed playing.

The did a reissue in 2000-1, but not since then. I agree, they're overdue for a re-release!
