A few weeks ago I bought a mint SY99. It has got a new display, new batteries, new battery holders, new switches and a new usb floppy simulator + flightcase. The vintage synth looks and feels brand new. Apparently with €800,00 (+shipping) and all the work that was done I still paid too much. But both the 77 and 99 are rare in my country. Anyway I don't care. I have a perfect SY99. I started to watch KZbin vids of the 99 but there are way more clips of the SY77 and I really liked them. The last part from this video of you noodling (starting at 21:30) did it. It gives me goosebumps and I fell in love with the SY77 as well. It's been ages since I heard a patch so beautiful. I love the way you played it. Remotely it reminds me of Vangelis. Last friday I bought an SY77 as well with a new flightcase and two cards for € 400,00 (+shipping). I'm pretty sure these synths will get a cult status (like the CS80) some day because they are very special. There aren't that many around cos they were expensive in 1989 and 1991. I'm sure prices will go up. Oh, I love what you do and I subbed 😄

Thanks! I need to finish my sounds and publish them for sale. The problem with this sound set is that it has a lot of external reverb, so I’d have to re-release the sounds without reverb, so it’s a lot of work… I love my sy77 though! Hope you enjoy yours!

@@MIDERA not so difficult once you get used to it...i tried SY manager software but i prefer using the panel for editing and i've also developed a system using midi sysex to turn the novation zero SL mk2 into a control panel for it. how do you edit the SY?

@@silverlight2004db The SY77 at least, you're sitting right in front of it. I too edit from the front, but it looks like it's a bit easier than on the TG. I have found software editors to not work very well because it seems to make the screen go nuts. I've considered the Electra One, but... well, I'm not 100% sure I'll keep the SY77. After getting more hands on synths, I find I turn to the SY less and less often.

@@MIDERA i have 2 tg77's on my r.h. side at eye level as i sit at the keyboard so it's pretty comfortable. Using the zero SL mk2 to control the synth also makes the screen go nuts so i use that more for real-time control while playing the synth which can make it a hands on experience similar to playing a knob-laden synth, infact i would say it really transforms the whole user experience for me.

I really liked this video, probably not for the reason it was titled. I like the sound of a solo synth, I can really enjoy it that way. I mean, in the past yeah piano was part of band, lots of stuff going on, but some people enjoyed concertos, just letting the piano be. Like the camera style as well, no stupid flashing lights, thanks man, made my birthday less lame.

Thanks Gossamyr :) hope your birthday ends up better than it seems to be going :/ I’d love to play piano better, but I never have the patience (or the time while my family is still up) to play enough. The piano sounds in the sy77 just aren’t very loud either, and usually sound very tinny! Wish that particular sound was better in the sy77. But yeah, I enjoy hearing a synth by itself, and I think the sy77/99 are some of the best sounding synths out there! Even if I used too much reverb, as another poster graciously noted.

reverb is like cowbell, always room in the mix for more, hahaha. I hear you on the practice, but here's something found out about my keyboarding 'skillz'. My best, most dexterous, playing comes from go, the first 45 minutes for some weird reason are the most articulate, expressive, and complex. After that, Idk if my fingers are tired or what, but they kinda bottom out and I sound like a 2nd year student warming up. This also seems to be true for when I pick up the guitar or bass. so, warming up is a mystery to me personally, but I focus my music...ahem, sounds I make on improvisation, I've even tried playing something I recorded again, and it came out a different piece. So in the end, making sound is an expression of the moment for me, which is one of the many reasons I won't ever tour cuz I can't, lmao...

Like Vangelis once said, the notes have to breathe, yours do and it gives them life. Reminds me of my first orignial Motif with VL and AN boards installed, sort of related to the SY if I remember correctly. Got a lot of mileage out of that Motif, missed the add on boards in later Motifs.

Thanks. Yeah, I agree. I sort of think the SY FM synths are among the best. I love how they sound and actually like the interface. I wish I didn’t have to press exit every time I do something, that’s about my only gripe. Truth is, the secret has been out for years, but people want knobby synths (myself included), and no one wants to bother programming this. Personally, I quite like creating patches. I’m going to probably work on creating a template patch bank that gives all the raw waveforms (including a PWM patch), so it’s easier to start editing with.

So I'm currently using a throwaway MIDI keyboard and hesitant to buy a keyboard synth. I supposed if all my synths had keyboards I'd have redundancy and no problems. There’s a programming guide I used to figure out how to use the algorithms to create saw, square, triangle waves... can’t think of the name of it, but I can post a link if you want to see it, it really helped me figure it out. Also, if you can figure out how to just use a few of the envelopes and set everything else to zero (there are too many rates and levels for me) it’ll get easier. Oh, and realize that you can copy and paste envelopes and filter settings by pressing the copy button - that saved me so much time making patches!

Let me know how it turns out. I don't know why, but after reading through, FM started making a lot more sense to me. I always felt like algorithms were these black boxes, how does one decide which algorithm to use? Well, thinking of each part of an algorithm as a block to create simple waveforms, it just seemed less complex. A simple 2-stack can give you a nice sawtooth (thicker than analog waves, I think), then if you have 3 of them side by side, you've got a nice 3 oscillator patch! Anyway, good luck!

Hi ollimoore - thanks. I used s programming guide on the internet to help my figure out what to do. See my comment to Craig about some tips and tricks, I can also find the link to what I used and post it for you, it’s pretty easy to find if you search for it. Basically, once I learned how algorithms worked and how to get them to function as waveforms, it became a bit less daunting. I think it would be hard for me to go back to a DX7 because you don’t have freely assignable feedback settings, which help really shape sounds.

Been a secret lurker on this synth for some time. Prices for it are getting low. Kinda hard to justify it, since I already have a Korg DS-8 and numerous fm software synths. You make it sing, no doubt!

I’ve never used the DS-8, and it seems great. But the differences seem pretty massive. The SY77 is a 6op, which allows the use of samples to act as modulators. However, I’ve heard the DS-8 is pretty easy to use, so there is that. Thanks!!

Yeah the DS-8 is pure simplicity to use. It’s a really elegant interface for editing FM quickly, but it only has 4 operators and a handful of algos. The SY-77 certainly has it beat on features. NOW I WANT ONE

I guess I don't exactly know how the DS8 functions, so maybe it does feedback differently than the Yamaha's.

​@@johnmeroney2007 I can't figure out the sequencer in the SY77 at all. Maybe mine is screwed up? I don't know. I hate it. I would've preferred an arpeggiator in it. No, you are absolutely not missing anything there. But the feel of the keys and the weight of the instrument? That would be lost with the rack unit. In my opinion - I'd get rid of the DX7ii and get the SY77, pare down a bit. I had, at one point, a DX7ii and sold it. It did everything the SY77 could do, but less. You have the TX816 for truly DX7 sounds. DX7ii is unnecessary in the world of FM compared to the SY77. Original DX7 is different, worth it on its own, but the middle child - nah. Just my opinion. And thanks :) I appreciate that!!!

@@MIDERA yeah. I’m looking into a SY99 actually. If I end up getting one I’ll let you know how the sequencer is. Currently I’m editing the 816 with the dx7ii, so I’ll hold onto it for a while, as I am also in a collecting mood for fm synths as I’m concentrating on that. (Former trombone player and euro rack person). Perhaps I can get enough chops to program via a SysEx via sexed, but I am also wanting to stick to hardware, S much as I respect use of the computer for music making. Definitely want to return to modular at some point. I’m just interested in all the unique processes of synthesizers and synth technologies in general. The main computer based synthesis I’m into is granular synthesis and iOS apps seem so right for that.

Hi, I created all of these patches. I think a few, like 2 or 3 are manipulated presets, which were mostly using AWM, but almost all of the sounds use FM to create the sounds. I’m planning to release a patch set, but I feel slightly guilty selling it based on this video because I used external reverb. I suppose I could see if my original video and audio is available and re-release this without reverb. Otherwise, I would need to record all 64 presets again, film it, upload it, then release the sounds for no one to purchase… at least that’s been my experience with releasing sound banks 🤣

Do the keys of the SY77 have springy-plasticy rebound or semi-weighted feel? Please let me know whenever you can. I had an SY99 and loved the keybed on that, but sold it out of necessity. I was thinking of getting an SY77 to fill the void of the SY99's departure, but wonder if the keybed is the same or not...

I'm not sure if they're the same unfortunately. I would say semi-weighted fell. It's probably my second favorite keybed I've ever used, with the virus kb as my number 1, but... I could have sworn the SY99 had a better keybed. I could be completely wrong though as I've never used one. The SY99 has some benefits though, such as allowing the import of samples without a secondary device (like the waveblade), a way to sync up the filters better too, and better FX - in other words, make sure you know the differences or you might be sorely disappointed.

@@MIDERA Thanks for the reply. I have this feeling that they may use the same keybed, and only differ in number of notes. As a former SY99 user, I would classify its action as semi-weighted and akin to that of an upright piano (but a little bit softer on impact). I liked the feedback and felt I could dig into it more. Sound-wise, I think they are very similar if not the same in most areas of activity. I have read the effects of the SY77 being the main issue of quality versus those of the SY99 (something to do with phase cancellation). I don't remember ever using the effects of the SY99 much, if at all. Using external effects processors seems like the best route for both ultimately. Some say the filters differ, and some say they are the same. I am not sure. If the keybed is the same, then I think I wouldn't mind these differences of procedure in regard to samples much because I can still hear the massive ability in the SY77 that I heard in the SY99, as they both share the same quality of being a hybrid of AFM and AWM2 synthesis. Those thick, massive sounds really satisfy; feels very analog sometimes. I read in your SY77 article from your website you bought yours for something like $260.00 in pretty much mint condition. What a deal! I am looking at one that also is 'pretty much mint', only in need of a floppy belt replacement, for $399.00. With respect to economic inflation over the years and also increaseed valuation of the synth, $399 might be today's good deal. I am still thinking hard on it though, especially along the lines of what you said about the possibility of being sorely disappointed. I'd rather have the SY99 again, but it would cost a lot more and who knows when one in excellent condition is going to be offered up. The values of both the SY99 and SY77 have definitely increased by a range of $200-500 over the past 7 years since I sold the SY99, I've seen.

The matrix is amazing for sure. Also, so is the SY77… which is somewhat mainstream. The SY77 is highly regarded.

MIDERA For sure. I used to own an EX5, FS1R and DX7, but the SY has always been on my drool list. I have a JX3P and MPC1000 now so I feel like this will be a fantastic combo. Love your stuff man. Awesome, yeah a collaboration would be great :) with a kid and work I find it difficult to manage my music, FYI. What made you sell the EX5 and FS1R? I had a DX7s but I felt it was nowhere near as interesting as my sy77. The original DX7 is at least easily serviceable and I like the look of it and size of it over the later models.

this synth sounds incredible.. is there a computer/iPad editor to edit this beauty nowadays?? I heard once that the patches cannot be transferrable via sysx?? Thnaks

I think they can all be edited via sysex. I use Patchbase (though I had issues with the SY77 with it, but it should work). I believe there are computer programs as well. I also am using the PL88 (which is amazing and you should get it) which allows the transfer of banks to and from it. Check that out for sure!

What do you mean "sound cards"? I just used the SY77. Are you referring to data cards or patch cards? I designed all the sounds that you hear, if that's what you're referring to. I always think of 'Sound card' as that thing you install in your computer. Like a soundblaster pro, which I think I was lucky enough to own back in the day.

@@MIDERA As I understand it, there are 3 methods of data storage on the SY77, the floppy drive, the waveform disk and the sound (patch) disk. I mean to ask what waveform disk you are using, especially since you said you used a waveform sample for the piano patch which I really love the sound of.

Gotcha. Yes, everything is stock samples, the waveforms that are on the disk. However, I used it with RCM, so it’s actually modulating an FM carrier, which is probably why it sounds the way it does.

​@@MIDERA What I was unclear on is the name of the disk you are using. If i'm not mistaken those disks do not come with the unit stock, so it could be any one of the official disks that yamaha produced. Just to be clear I'm talking about the patch at 7:04, not sure if we are on the same page.

Hey justplainodd - just to be clear: I have no disks at all. No floppy's, waveforms, soundpatch disks. Nothing. Whatever is in my unit is all I've got :/ I looked at the preset and it is called "Dyna piano" and the 'wave' says it's "PRESET 1 PIANO" - if that's any help.

Well - it totally makes sense that it’s banned because of that. Also, the guy who wrote it - Wessel, was a total douchebag, so, after reading up on it further, I sorta wished I hadn’t played it, but I love that video game. But with everything going on, especially in the US with the rise of Nationalism, I’d hate to be thought of as part of that (very large) group. It’s disgusting... so, yeah, perhaps it was in poor taste.

Eventide is always better for synths. Strymon sounds like plastic and turns any gear into a vst.
