Such an interesting change of pace from the deluge of ambient sounds and pads you find on this synth and so many others
@rm-studios Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Ambient sounds are cool but, in my soundsets, i rather focus on creating presets i would actually use as a keyboard player for my studio/live work.

@@rm-studios sick. This is absolutely the sort of stuff I wanna hear from this synth. Seeing other folks' experiments with faking sync and PWM and also reading up on the architecture and how it works is what made me want one, but then listening to it here on KZbin left me with a feeling that folks just see it as a pad machine because of its looping envelopes and stuff... Many folks also straight up avoiding using many of its advanced features or even simple stuff like its filters and I'm like... Why? They sound good though! I wanna hear them!

Some really pretty patches here! The SY99 is my all time fav synth (got mine in '92 - the Chick Corea endorsement got me, never regretted the, at the time considerable, investment) ... incredibly versatile and still (after 30+ years) super fresh sounding machine! Learning how to build interesting patches takes some time and effort, but it's absolutely worth it (even with literally thousands of HQ presets around).

Thanks sir! Yes, definitely worth the effort. And good patches for these beasts are always welcome!

Lots of tasty usable sounds! I have a bunch of Native Instruments VIs and have to weed through hundreds of strange sounds to find a few usable ones. Sometimes these hardware synths really do deliver, especially when one is willing to put in some programming time and effort.
@rm-studios Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. And yes, you’re right. While i was programming this bank, i had a lot of ‘Wow!’ moments. These machines have an incredibly vast palette of sounds, plus an attitude and character not easily replicable with virtual instruments!

Great patches and playing Roberto! Enjoyed the video. I'm curious to know how all these patches sound on the SY/TG77 with the different efx
@rm-studios2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Well, i must say that the overall intention of the patches is basically the same. Sure, they sound a little bit more Hi-Fi on the 99 and a little less on the 77 (and that's not necessarily bad), and sometimes i was limited to choose faster delay times but, except for the patches for which I made a separate demo in the video, the results are substantially the same.
@silverlight2004db2 жыл бұрын
@@rm-studios i like them, as well as my own sounds i also have some of the patchman banks, but these sounds have a different character again. so they would add a dimension to the tg77 that i don't really have yet...definitely on my to buy list.
@rm-studios2 жыл бұрын
@@silverlight2004db Thank you sir! Yes, i tried to cover a niche on which I haven’t found much material for these incredible synthesizers. And hearing that from a fellow programmer is very motivating :)

I feel like this video was longer at one point where you compared each patch. Where can I find that video?

I compared just the patches where the difference is perceivable. All the other ones are substantially the same.

awesome. i've tried a chunk of 'analog style' programming on the SY77 just using AFM and trying not to use the filter, but i can't get the basses to sound that massive, so many cool patches here!
@rm-studios2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Happy that you like them :)

Its about layering sounds. Try a deep sinewave layer under your basses or a filtered saw layer with some resonance
@halcyo3 ай бұрын
So, if you could only have one, 77 or 99? I've heard they're noticeably different in sound character. That the 99 is technically more impressive and has extra features, but many people like the 77 because it's got a more gritty, vintagey, unique tonal quality. I'm gonna pick one of these bad boys up and I'd love your opinion!
@rm-studios3 ай бұрын
Yes, the differences are the ones you listed and the fact that the multieffect section is more versatile on the 99. It all comes down to how much these added features matter to you. The sound character is slightly different, but is no night and day. Personally, my favorite is the 99.

Do you have any info about the floppy drive emulator installed in your SY99? I've looked at a few, but was concerned they wouldn't work in the SY series because they use the smaller capacity (720 MB) floppy disks.
@rm-studios10 ай бұрын
Your concerns are valid. The SY needs a specific gotek with specific settings and plugged via an additional adapter. So, if you, like me, don’t want to spend time figuring out how to make it work, search on eBay and other stores for goteks specifically tailored for the SY series :)

Awesome patches, I just recently purchased a sy77 very excited to grab one, but I’m confused in ordered to get these sounds onto my sy77 do I need to grab a usb floppy drive after I purchased, the retro key patch is lovely!
@rm-studios10 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! No, you just need to plug your SY77 via MIDI to a computer, and download a free midi sysex librarian such as MidiOx or Snoize. Easy task :)
@jayalpha485610 ай бұрын
Awesome!!!! Okay getting a midi usb asap thanks I was gonna get a dx7 but heard the sy77/99 is severely underrated
@rm-studios10 ай бұрын
@@jayalpha4856 Yes, an USB Midi cable is enough. Just don’t buy those cheap unbranded ones as they don’t work fine with midi SysEx. Go for reputable brands like ESI, CME, Roland/Edirol and so on. And yes, the SY series is a sound designer’s dream. DX7 series is full of attitude but it’s first generation FM, so it definitely has many limits.
@jayalpha485610 ай бұрын
@@rm-studios also should I look into the usb emulator drive and also I heard something called wave blade
@rm-studios10 ай бұрын
@@jayalpha4856 It really depends on what you're going to do with your SY. I'm not a big fan of the rompler part of the instrument, so the Waveblade does not make any particular sense to me. I find the Datablade more useful for my needs. I have a Floppy Emulator on the 99, but i don't find myself using it very much to be honest.

In your opinion sounds warmer Sy99 or Sy77?
@rm-studios Жыл бұрын
The 77 sounds a bit grainier and less HI-FI. The 99 has new converters and higher resolution. Nothing really drastic, though.
