I've got a Tracer 9 GT in this colour and i love it , i do agree about the screen though , it is a bit noisy , but other than that i love it , the TFT screens are a bit of a marmite thing but i don't spend all my time staring at them , Good review Andy

This bike is in the top group of bikes I'd consider if I ever replaced my trusty old Versys 650. The more I've read about engine design, the more I think the inline 3-cyl is the optimum compromise for a bike. Oh, and those headlights are a hell of a surprise; I assumed those were the optional driving lights. I could do without the instrument cluster looking like a scuba divers face.

Tall guy bike problems, 6'5" here and it's always a problem, buffeting. My GS is the first one with frontal area that works reasonably ok for me with an aftermarket slightly broader windscreen on it.

Same here, GS is the only bike that fits and even that can sometimes feel a bit cramped in the leg department. I've put Wunderlich Vario Ergo 3D on top of the oem screen and it's great, I can ride pretty fast with the visor open. Side buffeting is still an issue though.

Hey Andy, the noisy screen is largely dependent on which helmet you wear and what your head positioning is ... hence you being a tall rider must increase Noise for you significantly. It's cool that you are a big rider testing this bike and giving fellow Giants a heads-up. But ideally you don't spent this much time talking about this issue (which a lot of 6.0 and 5 10 people won't even notice). #justsaying #feedback Thanks for your Review. Quiet quick and pointy otherwise.

I have a 2018 Tracer, no issues with throttle response(now it has learned how to deal with E10) Screen is a pita as it produces noise & buffeting, but they're not that expensive to swap for another. Mine was supposed to have cruise(according to the blurb on advert)but if it has it, dunno where it's been hidden :P Arthritis means I'd prefer it to have cruise, but instead I just don't ride whenever the joints are complaining. I try & avoid the wet n cold too, but living in NW England with 2 types of weather (wet n cold or warm & wet)that's not easy.

Regarding the seat and the windscreen... Yamaha offers the touring screen and comfort (or comfort&heated) seat as option from an accessory catalog. Which may solve annoying buffeting. Also there is like at least 3 other brands offering various screens in sizes and colors. And is not expensive, like 130€. What is quite annoying for me. For some reason there is no indication of remaining range. For a touring bike I think is essential to know how long I can continue until next petrol station . The only indication is a flashing last fuel tank segment which indicates last 3 liters remaining in the fuel tank, which is roughly 60km until stop. Also lack of any phone mirroring feature in brand new bike is facepalm. The new Honda NT1100 is less advanced and powerful but Apple CarPlay as standard is way to go in 2021.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
Thats what the dealer said to me. But the fact that I should spend 15,000€ on a bike and then immediately spend another 400€ because Yamaha purposely put rubbish components on their bike so that they could squeeze a bit more profit out, offends me greatly! The stock seat should be the comfort seat! And the screen that comes from the factory would do it’s job. Otherwise it’s just needless plastic pollution. The lack of a range indicator doesn’t bother me so much though I’ve never had one and i mostly manage to know how far i can still go. Phone mirroring is also a non-issue for me. I now tend to ignore my phone completely while I’m riding. I don’t need to know what’s going on in the world until i stop for a break!

@@AndyManCam Fully understand I am on the same page. Point of my comments is the bike is otherwise great and instead avoid and buy something else just for small design errors there is a quite cheap and quick solution to solve mentioned problems. I have the suspicion the windscreen is exactly the same one from the Tracer 900 to cut the cost. Anyway there is no "perfect" bike on the market always something what I don't like. This one is close as possible to have comfortable sport touring bike in my eyes for okayish money. The rest is not so advanced, significantly more expensive or more heavier.

Hi Andy, i own the 2016 Tracer 900 and hated the screen and could only go two ways, higher or lower and went for the lower and have a low smoked black sport screen on it now and its great, yes im in the wind but like that a lot having come from the 2008 CB1000R. I have never had any problems with the throttle response on mine (i think i have a lucky example). The seating position is way better when de bars are positioned more to the front, for me its perfect (but took a few rides to get used to after the CB1000R), went all the way to the Alps and back from here in holland and i must say i never had any aches or pains. I think your length has a lot to do with it and maybe a bigger bike would work better (the 1250 GS?). Thanks for the review, gonna do a test ride on the Tracer 9 GT once as that will most probably be my next bike, but then again you never know :)

Totally understand the screen thing mate. I still prefer being in the wind and have given up the idea of anything with a screen. The GS seems like an anti-bike to me. So many Screens, sub-screens and screenlets to cut out ALL the wind. Tank Range that nobody in ‚normal‘ life needs. Front suspension that removes cornering feel and more luggage than most SUV‘s. With all that, I’d sooner drive the car!

@@AndyManCam “very precise with the waypoints” would drive me crazy, I use a lot of imported routes and like to just jump on and ride, so that could be a bit too frustrating for me I think. Sick of tired of searching for windscreen that will resolve problem and I don't want a huge tall windscreen that will impact behavior of the bike in corners etc, buy one regret one, buy second regret second, learned lesson on my cb500x. Comparison to your Honda. Much more useful. Speed/ acceleration is deceiving. Ride with someone who has a Honda like yours, your faster than you think. Throw screen away ! I use a short cut down screen, no panniers, feels lively like a sport bike. On trips (and in winter) I use a Puig Tall screen with deflector, 4 screws and just clip panniers on. 10 minutes. Now it’s a tourer. Kawa sx is more old school but pretty handy.

They definitely do a flat seat for that ...... but then it's not a triple or a four, but it would be my choice of the naked bikes.( although I like a screen, so might choose the Tracer ) but I'm 6" shorter than you. What about Z900 or Z900RS? There's just, never, a perfect bike. Nice review, Andy. This time they’ve lazily plonked the same dash on as the MT-09 (so not at all retro and no styling effort expended) and drive something VERY odd with the rear seat. The seat is canted but the bars kept me straight so I started developing this subtle but noticeable pressure pain in my lower back after an hour or so. For my height the pegs are exactly in the wrong place preventing me to plant the foot properly. I don't have a small ars but the seat was too wide for me, to the point I got cramps in ma hips. The controls are pretty fidly, especially that darn wheel on the right hand. At least the wind shield worked for me :) Seriously, awsome machine, if it would just fit me. Oh and that fancy suspension, works nice on smooth roads and bumpy roads but transitioning, it takes a couple of bumps to "learn". Can be weird, especially on more aggresive turns with hidden bumps. @@AndyManCam The weight just melts away when on the move and as you are tall you will find it easy to get comfy. Loaded up with touring gear nothing else will keep up over mountain passes etc with GS. Just so confidence inspiring and properly sorted….I know ..everyone’s got one …trust me I have had so many bikes over the years trying to avoid the GS but always come back…and the latest is still the best bike around 👍

@@Hemlck The weight doesn't melt away on hard downhill braking entry into a hairpin (or on repeated fast and tight twisties, (though it does admirably well here too!)), you can't beat the laws of physics! (and the ADV EATS front tyres for breakfast due to EVEN MORE weight... ;) ). It's an amazing machine considering the size and weight, but "nothing else will keep up" seems an odd thing to say! :)

Yeah I’m sure they’re great. But they’re SO expensive that i could by my bike, all the touring gear and STILL have enough left over to buy a small car! Plus i think they’re both ugly and that they take away a lot of what makes biking, biking!
@Hemlck
@Hemlck 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattmutane5502 What I said was - loaded up with touring gear nothing will keep up and I stand by that. Once you put hard panniers, a top box and tank bag etc and fill em with gear for a few weeks of camping touring you have the most capable bike over mountain passes and nothing will keep up. Of course many unloaded lightweight bikes are faster on the twisties (but not by much) but loaded up for touring their handling is ruined.

As an owner of a 2015 T9, i can confirm that the stock throttle response is atrocious. However, there is a number of things you can do to dramatically improve it, most of them for free. Without getting into detail, i would say the mods make the throttle response >acceptable
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 жыл бұрын
It’s so very much better on this one. Finally it’s not just hype from Yamaha about supposed improvements. It was a really fun bike to ride, but those ergo issues and the screen baffle me. Also i found the engine surprisingly a little breathless compared to my (supposedly) low on torque inline 4! Next!!
@FraeschD
@FraeschD 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam True that. I went through 3 different windscreens untill i settled for a tiny one in the lowest position so that i just get a clean stream of air instead of all the buffeting at the helmet. The CBR does have more CC and is aparently geared lower than the T9, but i get what you mean. I'm also on the look - as every motorcycle owner ever - currently trying to figure out if i could live with the looks of the new Ducati V2 S.

Yamaha need to hire a professional seat designer. They cannot make seats to save their lives at the moment.

Sad but sadly true. I think it’s another sneaky cop out with manufacturers that they just assume owners will take matters into their own hands and buy an aftermarket seat. Same with screens, mirrors, end cans, mudguards….
