This bike is in the top group of bikes I'd consider if I ever replaced my trusty old Versys 650. Regarding the seat and the windscreen... Yamaha offers the touring screen and comfort (or comfort&heated) seat as option from an accessory catalog. Which may solve annoying buffeting. Also there is like at least 3 other brands offering various screens in sizes and colors. And is not expensive, like 130€. What is quite annoying for me. For some reason there is no indication of remaining range. For a touring bike I think is essential to know how long I can continue until next petrol station . The only indication is a flashing last fuel tank segment which indicates last 3 liters remaining in the fuel tank, which is roughly 60km until stop. Also lack of any phone mirroring feature in brand new bike is facepalm. The new Honda NT1100 is less advanced and powerful but Apple CarPlay as standard is way to go in 2021.
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Thats what the dealer said to me. But the fact that I should spend 15,000€ on a bike and then immediately spend another 400€ because Yamaha purposely put rubbish components on their bike so that they could squeeze a bit more profit out, offends me greatly! The stock seat should be the comfort seat! And the screen that comes from the factory would do it’s job. Otherwise it’s just needless plastic pollution. The lack of a range indicator doesn’t bother me so much though I’ve never had one and i mostly manage to know how far i can still go. Phone mirroring is also a non-issue for me. I now tend to ignore my phone completely while I’m riding. I don’t need to know what’s going on in the world until i stop for a break!
@zdenekanyz98703 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam Fully understand I am on the same page. Point of my comments is the bike is otherwise great and instead avoid and buy something else just for small design errors there is a quite cheap and quick solution to solve mentioned problems. Hi Andy, i own the 2016 Tracer 900 and hated the screen and could only go two ways, higher or lower and went for the lower and have a low smoked black sport screen on it now and its great, yes im in the wind but like that a lot having come from the 2008 CB1000R. I have never had any problems with the throttle response on mine (i think i have a lucky example). The seating position is way better when de bars are positioned more to the front, for me its perfect (but took a few rides to get used to after the CB1000R), went all the way to the Alps and back from here in holland and i must say i never had any aches or pains. I think your length has a lot to do with it and maybe a bigger bike would work better (the 1250 GS?). Totally understand the screen thing mate. I still prefer being in the wind and have given up the idea of anything with a screen. The GS seems like an anti-bike to me. The early gen tracer has eccentric bar risers, so if you spun them around 180° you could move the bars forward or backward, not by much, around 20mm i think, so i wonder if the new one has the same system to compensate for change in seat position?

Everyone else seems to like all bikes saying that they’re all good, when in fact, whilst neither bike is bad these days but myself I struggle to find the perfect bike. For instance, I totally relate to what you said about the ergonomics of the Tracer, seat sliding you forward into the tank and handlebars not feeling right. It was the same with the previous generation. Why is that? It doesn’t feel natural to me. For ergonomics nothing beats Honda. All the bikes I tested from the manufacturer seem to feel right from the get go. Even the simple CRF250! Yamahas do make some lovely engines though.

The engine is a cracker. The seat, screen and instrument cluster, not so much. Beggars belief how and why, Yamaha can get them so wrong. They offer a touring screen and comfort seat as optional extras, which to me says, "The stock ones are crap, but for an additional outlay, these can be improved". And just whack a full size colour TFT screen an the thing. I'm in the market for this style of bike but Yamaha won't be getting my money for this bike. Great review as always.

Comparison to your Honda. Much more useful. Speed/ acceleration is deceiving. Ride with someone who has a Honda like yours, your faster than you think. Throw screen away ! I use a short cut down screen, no panniers, feels lively like a sport bike. On trips (and in winter) I use a Puig Tall screen with deflector, 4 screws and just clip panniers on. 10 minutes. Now it’s a tourer. Kawa sx is more old school but pretty handy.
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, once back on the Honda afterwards, i realised that the Tracer was a bit breathless in comparison. Ultimately isn’t it more about how it feels than what it actually is? After all, most of the time (on the best rides) we’re out on the road alone!
@douglasalexander43483 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam Your right. It’s how it feels that counts. I didn’t realise how fast it was until I rode with my regular guys. I think that you'll prefer the MT09 as it doesn't have a screen. Mind you, it's as ugly as hell. Maybe the XSR900 will be the one for you. As it's a retro they might do a flatter seat option for the XSR ( think I'm clutching at straws there ) Speed twin, maybe. They definitely do a flat seat for that ...... but then it's not a triple or a four, but it would be my choice of the naked bikes.( although I like a screen, so might choose the Tracer ) but I'm 6" shorter than you. What about Z900 or Z900RS? There's just, never, a perfect bike. Nice review, Andy. It shows that you haven't been loaned the bike by the manufacturer and feel that you can't give your totally honest opinion on the bits that you don't like.
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
I think so too. I think this has proven to me that i still prefer naked bikes. At some point I’ll just need to maybe get a bigger naked bike! The XSR looks all wrong to me. The last model had that horrible cheap dash and taillight. This time they’ve lazily plonked the same dash on as the MT-09 (so not at all retro and no styling effort expended) and drive something VERY odd with the rear seat. Looks like the seat my dads old XS400SE had. And that was NOT a stylish bike!! Somebody has definitely fallen asleep at the wheel in the Yamaha styling department.
