I have had the Tyros 5 for a few years now and use it in the studio to write , record and save demos. I was never going to play live with it so sound switching was never an issue. I have only scratched the surface with what this keyboard can do.

A great board. High in price, but there is massive arranging power in this board that was not covered in this test. It actually has voice leading architecture similar VSL Instruments Pro for splits on synth, string, and other acoustic ensemble sounds. I believe it has a full Motif engine inside, plus additional samples and features. The lines are blurring between workstations and arrangers. Many of the pre-fab arranger styles will not be of use to composers, but for some they might help ignite ideas. And this thing has full notation view on the screen and audio and midi export. The person that seems to think the Yamaha Mox sounds better needs to have their head examined. No, not close. Tyros can hold its own with the best workstations out there. It has a full blown Motif engine.

Agree entirely. I am a composer and do a lot of midi sequencing. I started with a Tyros 2. Is really gets me how these models are so overlooked and many don't delve deep dive into the full capabilities of the tyros 5.

Sad that you get DSP cutoff while switching sounds. Wonder if they use software emulation for effects these days-- not sure why we're still having issues with effects cutoff on high end keyboards.

+Sandro Pozi I presume he means the way the sounds doesn't fully finish playing if you change sound while it's still sustaining. I would imagine this would be the preferred option 90% of the time anyway.

It surprises at how many of these basic sounds such as pianos, e pianos, pads and drums either share the same samples as Halion Sonic or sound similar. But of course there are many sounds exclusive to Tyros 4 and Tyros 5 such as the scatt and gospel choir voices. I did consider buying a Tyros 4 or 5 but in the end I decided there was no sense in me buying an arranger keyboard as I don't use auto accompaniments.

A big flaw in tyros 5: I have been watching many videos of tyros 5 and found out a very big flaw which yamaha company has to take serious when ever you change from one voice(sound) to another voice(sound) the sound you're changing stops and then plays again whereas you've changed to the other sound. carefully watch the video from 1:58 , the sound is changed 1:59 new sound selected BUT the previous sound can be heard while changing 1:58 the first sound stops and then again plays however this immediate pause shouldn't be there. carefully see the video from 1:58 to 2:00. you'll notice it in the later parts of the video as well.

Totaly agree - A S.T.S. (smooth transition sounds) system, like Korg does, should be put in this flagship!!!

In fact, talking about serious workstations just kurzweil does this in a efficient way. If you want other brands: some old models of roland, korg and the kronos.

i think all of us should inform yamaha about this major flaw. i wanted to buy tyros 5 and i was curious to get it but for this reason i had to stay back. still i cant figure out, how can i contact yamaha and highlight this major flaw. Tyros 5 is the best keyboard amongst all i would say but these flaws seriously need attention. so anyone who reads comment please try to email yamaha and please accentuate this flaw because sometimes one flaw makes everything zero.

I understand you, I'm a kurzweil user for a large amount of reasons and for me this is one of the best features of this manufacturer. But most of keyboard players are not worried for this; and I 'm not sure if a big mass of people will claim to yamaha for this feature.

just a bit better but much more expensive then yamaha portatone, bontempi or casio....not sure if it is better than schoenhut toy piano, though....those shoobidoobie vocals are pilfered from roland fp5 and this is probably the best thing on tyros.

there are enough effect processors inside. he made the mistake to change the sounds at the same register. cant explain in with words correctly. at the tyros 3 i can change sounds without cutting the effect! just use another layer with an seperate effect prozessor!

Tyros doesn't have built in speakers but it is typically sold with an external speaker set or you can just use it with studio monitors. The Tyros speaker set consists of a powered sub woofer that usually goes underneath the keyboard and a pair of satellite speakers that clip on to each side of the keyboard. But at a live gig it would usually be plugged into a PA system or in a studio environment it's more likely to be used with studio monitor speakers.
