Yamaha WaveRunner only clicks when I press starter!

If you try to start your WaveRunner and it only "clicks" when you attempt to start, then your starter relay has gone out. I"ll show you how you can change with just a few tools and 30 minutes of your time!

Really appreciate that you took the time to make this video and share it. I was having the same click and intermittent start. I was searching to see how to get at the starter when I found your video. I was hearing (and feeling) the click, so I assumed the relay was working (I've never seen a relay that would energize (click) when it gets power, but not pass the power to the load device (starter in this case). But, since the relay is easier to get at and less expensive, I decided to try it based on your experience. Sure enough, that fixed it. Thanks again; you saved me a bunch of time, money, and frustration had I replaced the starter and still had the same problem!!

Hey Dave , starter relay just clicks when I press start button . took positive wire off of relay post and connected to battery just to make sure my starter was working and didn’t get anything from it ? good battery , any ideas ?? TIA

Great video. Had no idea what the issue was. Craft went in Memorial weekend. Worked fine. Went to prep for upcoming July 4th and no start, just the click and thump that could be felt. Local dealers booked out 4-5 weeks. Watched video, confirmed symptoms, ordered part with expedited shipping. Just completed install and back in business. There are going to be some happy grandkids in a few days. And me.

This sounds exactly like my problem. I press the start button and click/click. With enough tries it does turn over and start. Does this with a fully charged battery, so I'm going to assume the starter is good and try just replacing this relay first. Thanks for the great video!

I ordered a new starter relay took the old one out and noticed the push pins were slightly smaller and the nuts for the grounds were gold not silver ?

Great video. I have the same setup with 2006's, same colors. One started great in March, won't now (first time trying to take it out last week). I hear the relay clicking and some clicking from the starter. Can I assume it is the starter and go right there? Just want to be able to isolate some more before ordering parts.

Assuming your battery is fully charged and connections are tight...I’d start there first and then move on from there

Hello I have a 11/10 WaveRunner and it will not start. I press the start button and the dash lights up with the information but no crank. I changed the battery on my remote checked to make sure battery was in correctly but the remote doesn't show if it is off secure. Could the starter relay cause both issues?

Have a 2021 jetski I’ve had for 6 months with no issues. I decided to not ride it for about a month and a half and now when I go to start it, it clicks everytime I press the start button. Shouldn’t I just need to replace the battery?

I can't see your entire question but sounds as though you have a weak battery. I would charge it fully and try again before I did anything else.

I tried jumping it off my f-150 to give it some extra juice and it still doesn’t want to crank the way it should. Very slow and weak. I know it has good compression and the motor isn’t locked up by any means. Just doesn’t seem to be getting enough to crank the way it should

That’s odd it turns slow , it could be the starter. The only thing I can think is the brushes inside are worn or corroded and it’s not making good contact? Strictly a guess and pretty hard to diagnose without seeing. Hope that helps

I have a 2012 Waverunner. When I press the ignition the starter attempts to kick on but won't. When I wiggle the ground wire leading to the starter (under the exhaust manifold) it acts like it wants to start but won't. Do you think this is a problem with the wire, the starter, or the starter relay? Thanks!

Not sure exactly what you mean by “acts like it wants to start but won’t”, does that mean it spins over? Sounds like you could have a loose or corroded ground wire.

@@michaelbentley7717 it’s hard to diagnose without seeing unfortunately but it sounds like it’s starter related. Hate to tell you what to do since I can’t see but I’d start with taking starter off and doing some test on a bench with a battery and some wires and see if she spins over. If it works off the ski then you can eliminate that. Hope that helps

@@bdradley1 ended up figuring out that when I crossed the starter relay, the waverunner would turn on just fine. Thinking the relay was bad, I replaced it but it still didn't fix the problem. Took it to a boat repair guy (that was a mistake) and now I'm on a huge waitlist. Now I'm thinking it could've been the ignition button. Will update lol

I’ve worked my issue to either an improperly programmed security remote that is causing my ski to stay in a “locked” mode. Or a bad safety kill switch. I can manually ground them black wire of the starting solenoid and everything works fine. I don’t know what implications hardwiring that black wire to the starting solenoid will have. I will ensure the safety kill switch and the stop button works appropriately from a safety standpoint. I have the wiring diagram, but it’s not the most intuitive diagram in the world.

You will have to get a multimeter and start with checking wires. You could have a shorted wire or bad ground that is causing the same symptoms
