Yamaha XSR700 Six Year Review in UK Peak District

Giving my thoughts on six years of ownership of Yamaha XSR700 motorcycle whilst riding through the Peak District. Also applies to Yamaha MT07 & FZ07.

Hi, I’ve had mine 4 years now an love , I did blow another grand an a half on upgrading suspension to fully adjustable K-Tech front an rear an had it set up for a 15 stone fat bloke. Went for Techbike stainless exhaust (£245) solo seat, DNA air filter an remap. What a blast. Its deffo a keeper 💪😎

I bought a new 21' model after passing my test too. I just know it's a keeper, I have eyes for a sports tourer but no intentions of selling XSR, fab trustie bike. (and cool bike). Yeah, one of the selling features was the bucket head light for me, 2022 model changed this - unfortunately, I think. I do only take mine out in the dry and no issues. It does everything. Got my XSR700 back in 2018 after watching some of your videos and absolutely love it. Never had any issues with the starter switch thankfully, but definitely struggle with rust issues... swing arm, bolts and just various bits. Its mainly cosmetic, and do try to give it a good clean when I notice it getting bad. I changed the headlight out for an LED bucket lamp, annoyingly that's started to rust too :( ! Also fitted a yoshi straight exhaust on mine but not bothered to remap, not sure if it's worth it or not?

I ride those single track roads more and more nowadays - I'm definitely considering getting rid of the crf and 'scrambling' an XSR. It's all fine in the summer but how full of gravel/potholes/mud/flooding are they in the winter! I dunno, would it ever be a good sub for a 21" front?

I'm guessing the damage to the engine and frame was due to crash bungs that stick out? Nice video BTW.

Did you heae about the upcoming Honda CL 500 (scrambler)? I do ride a Street Triple R right now (MJ 2020), I like it, but it asks for getting pushed. I am tempted to either add a 2nd bike, or even swap my Street R. The shortlist is (order price up), Honda CL 500, Yamaha XSR700 and Triumph Street Srcambler 900. I have test ridden the XSR700 already and loved it. From Triumph I do know the Street Twin (that one is too low for me, 760mm) - but I think i have to refresh my memories of the motor with a test ride of the Street Scrambler. The Triumph is >10k Euros, which is a lot for what you get in my view. The Honda (not available yet) is going to be the cheapest (most likely around 6k Euro), but I fear at least as an "ONLY this" bike it will be not enough (~ 48 PS expected). The XSR700 is kind of a do it all in one in my view, enough power in 90% of all cases, fun, Neo-Retro great look. What would you recommend?

I went to my local Yamaha dealer and Swang my leg over at XSR 700 the other day. I fell in love instantly. I had a few questions for the salesman about the aftermarket exhaust and they said the aftermarket exhaust itself wouldn’t invalid warranty, but if I remapped it it would. How long did you wait before getting it remapped?

I added k&n air filter,kelpie exhaust,along with a power plug,the xsr700 2022 has grunt and sounds sweet

Hi awesome review can I ask how tall you are? I’m 6’2” and wondering if it’s too small for me. Will try and go sit on one today 🤟

6'1" it's got quite a tall seat height for a smaller bike

what do you mean with ''the seat destroys your leg'''? Because of the edge on the seat?

yep I found the seat to be a bit firm for very long rides

@@gringotom242 I had the chance to test ride one and must say that the form of the seat combined with the seating position isn't very comfortable as the mt07 for example. Because of the high price of the yamahas I went for the 690 Duke R :D

Is the ECU flash absolutely necessary with this exhaust?

No but it's advisable for best performance

I wouldn’t recommend switching it off with the starter switch. Switch it off with the key. Then turn the starter switch off if you want. It’s not great for the engine to use the starter switch every time. But hey, it’s your bike so do what you want.

The starter switch is on the same circuit as the key, so what’s the difference?

@@JamesMcilvenny-hm4cx I was always told it’s because the key cuts ignition but the kill switch disables the fuel pump. It seems that is wrong having looked into it. So I guess use whichever you prefer.
