I was happy to see you put the wires in a Loom. I would put on a bit of silicone adhesive on the splice to make sure it would not corrode. Good job, something will do over the winter.

Excellent video. Clear steps and useful information about the relay switch and how it works. Thank you from the UK, sir!

I purchased a service manual download hoping to get a decent quality copy of the electrical diagram to find the tail light circuit, the pdf I got from servicemanualwarehouse was very poor once zoomed into the wire numbers and connectors. You must have been lucky to have found the connector. I tapped into a switched circuit, but don't know which circuit I tapped into, am going to go back and look for the tail light circuit like you did. In this case it's for a Garmin GPS, draws little current, don't need a relay. Thanks again for sharing. Jim H.

Thanks John. Just got a XT and going through the motions of getting is setup. Your tips are handy and I'll add some positaps to my kit.. Sure wish I had a shop to fab that little mount.

I note that there are relays already in the electrical circuit - headlight, indicators - can these be used as the relay for the USB or is a separate relay required for each “device”?
@johntalbert82272 жыл бұрын
@@jeffh8840 I always hook up a separate relay for my usb charge ports. That way I can use the proper gauge wire to power it, you can also hook other items to that new circuit such as lights. Other circuits usually can't support heavier loads, most of the wires are very small gauge wires.

Great tutorial, thank you! I'm getting ready to install the same setup on my new Yamaha XT 250, but as someone who doesn't know all that much about electrical work, I have a stupid question that I'm hoping you can answer. The red and black wires that connect to the back of the USB port, are they connected back to the battery directly, or are they tapped into other wires using posi-taps? I watched and re-watched your video, and maybe I just missed it, but wanted to ask so that I don't screw somethinig up(which I can easily do!). Thanks in advance.

The black goes directly to the battery as your ground. The red one goes to the relay, the one marked #30. That is the reason for the relay, you want a direct line from the battery, thru the relay (to carry the load). Using the relay you can trigger it with a small current and a tiny wire, but the actual load goes thru a separate larger wire to handle whatever load you have up to the limit of the relay. Also, don't forget to put a fuse close to the battery on the wire that goes to relay #87.

Nice not to have to deal with plugging in and unplugging the battery tender one, nice Vargas poster too.

Would tapping into the tail light wire work for hooking up a set of auxiliary lights? Is that the same as tapping into an ACC wire?.
@petepete33898 ай бұрын
You didn't need a relay for such a low draw. A simple power-side switch would do fine directly from the battery to the usb. Add an inline fuse to be safe.

Looking at my 22 xt250, was amazed as to how many fuses there were. I did not have a schematic so I kept probing until I found a switched wire, in my case it is for a GPS, the manufacturer recommends going directly to the battery, but as we know, sooner or later, the battery will be dead. Were you able to find a schematic online somewhere? I probably should own a service manual, but a diagram will do for now, so if anybody can direct me to one, would appreciate it. Fishing the wire up to the handle bar was a pain, but got it done. I appreciate your video and your explanations. Jim

Where do I get one of those relays or is there a number or place that supplies them?
