In Manila, Gerneral Tomoyuki Yamashita, the "Tiger of Malaya" who became the supreme commander of all Japanese forces in the Philippines, was brought to trial on Oct. 29, 1945, convicted and, on Dec. 7, 1945, sentenced to death. Yamashita's trial, conducted by a five-man U.S. military commission, was in fact the first major war crimes trial after World War II. This is an excerpt of the defendant on the stand on Nov. 21, 1945 ( ironically, the day of the Opening Statement by Justice Robert H Jackson at Nuremberg).

theexpliotedforlife: Yamashita had ordered a full evac of Japanese troops from Manila. However, 10k marines of Vice Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi disobeyed these orders and remained in Manila & ordered the Filipinos to be executed. Gen Yamashita had no control over those who chose to disobey his orders and was found guilty & executed. If the trial were held today, he'd be innocent. In Singapore, two of Yamashita's soldiers committed an atrocity in a hospital. Yamashita had them shot.

@J M may like my uncle more, he was with 503 Parachute infantry. Jumped Markums Island , part of retaking of Mindanao( not until later years talked about it. Japanese in Mindanao were eating dead Anericans.Jumped corregidor and part of retaking of Manila. If you look at historical news accounts, there is photo of three US paratroopers standing in front of Hall of Justice. I've have been trying to find front page copy from NY Dailey. Spent entire war in combat, no rotation . Lost old photo. If you can find it, I would appreciate copy

before he was hanged, Yamashita tried to shake General Percival's hand, but Perival refused because how Yamashita treated 300,000 POWS in Singapore. Then Yamashita cried because he lost his honour.

Clearly, this is not Tomoyuki Yamashita, as, for one, you can hear @21 seconds the question: "Did you ever hear of any commander under General Yamashita issue in such order?" -So, they are referring to Yamashita in the 3rd person when questioning this witness -Two -Look at this guy's service ribbons -One row -Yamashita had four rows -Additionally, I've never seen photos of Yamashita wearing glasses. Lastly, as has already been pointed out. Yamashita was portly. This guy isn't...

Figured it out -This is Lt. General Akira Muto, Chief of Staff of Japanese 14th Area Army under Yamashita. Here, he is appearing as a witness for the defense -Enter "Tomoyuki Yamashita tried and sentenced to death" in the youtube search field and you'll find a 17 sec vid where you see him to the left of Yamashita -Wikipedia and Google him; plenty of pics -Also, there's a record of the Yamashita trial proceedings at lawofwar dot org.

theexpliotedforlife: Yamashita's oders were to treat them according to the Geneva Convention and feed them the same rations as his soldiers. Of course, when things got tough, this did not get implemented. Yamashita was cut off from soldiers in Manila, those soldiers, he never directly commanded or knew. Manila being surrounded by MacArthur's forces, Yamashita was powerless to intervene with that scoundrel of a Japanese Iwabuchi.

Ooops. It should read Yamashita, not Yamashito. Read Edward T. Layton's, "And I Was There". Yamashita was not in command of the troops in Manila during the massacre. It was the Royal Marines under another General's command. The Japanese had a different command structure with different ideas of responsibility than that of the Americans. In the trial, the Americans imposed their idea of command responsibility onto those of the Japanese. They were not the same. They hung an innocent man.

I tend to wonder whatever happened to the bodies of these condemned senior officers who got executed since the trials were held in the Philippines. On the back of my mind I sometimes think they got what the German high command got: a quick cremation followed up by an unceremonious tossing of the ashes in to the water. But I'd like to know for sure though.

Yamashito was innocent. He gave orders not to commit these crimes. He executed those he caught committing war crimes. At no time did any direct evidence emerge where he ever gave such an order. Most of those who accused him were ignorant of the trues circumstances of his command. He was the finest gentleman Japanese commander ever. You would be amazed at his personal story. They truly hung an innocent man. He was convicted on hearsay.

The trial was hastily done in order for Yamashita's swift execution. They hung a different person though, they knew he was innocent and they knew the General knows where the hidden treasures were. The General died of natural cause in the US... conspiracy?

I consider myself an American patriot, who places the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights above everything else. And the value of ALL human life. We are of the same race : the human race. Nevertheless, I must confess that I have never felt comfortable with the Allied bombings of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden, and the execution of General Yamashita. I believe we would have won the war unconditionally without those events.
@APhilCollinsFan
@APhilCollinsFan 7 жыл бұрын
For my part l fell very comfortable they execute Yamashita , he was with any doubt guilty of war crime ! as for Dresden l agree with you 100% actually who order the bombing of dresden should have been on trial for war crime as well ! Hiroshima and Nagasaki you speculate and there is no way to know for sure what would had happen ! Don't' forget after Hiroshima . the USA ask again Japan to surrender or else , even after the second bomb they refuse to surrender , .. the Emperor had to step in to stop the war . this to show you how much the Japanese military high command didn't care about the civilian population .

Dresden was the last north-south rail link in Germany at the time. The Americans wanted it bombed to prevent Germans soldiers from moving south into the mountains, and perhaps prolonging the war. The Russians wanted it bombed to keep the Germans from using it for supplies and reinforcements in that area. It was a legitimate raid with legitimate purpose. Yes, the US theoretically could have won the war without the atomic bombings. But the proper question is "At what cost?" The war against Japan would have to be finished on the home islands. What happened in China or the Pacific was of no consequence. The proposed invasion of Kyushu was a non-stater since the Japanese had more soldiers on Kyushu that there were Americans in the invasion force. And there was no way the navy was going to position a stationary fleet two miles off shore against a mass of kamikaze planes. The US never developed an effective defense against them and Kamikazes were getting 15% hit rates at Okinawa. US policy was in crisis in August 1945. We had no idea how to end the war. The advent of the atomic bomb was very fortunate timing indeed. Also remember that without the atomic bombings, the war goes on. A few people in the Gov't may have thought about surrender but the army never did. And the army was the only power in Japan in 1945. The US would have had to reduce the Japanese islands by force. That would have meant (among other things) the death of every POW in Japanese hands. The Japanese were planning to kill them all by November 1945. I would sacrifice more than a few Japanese cities to save 400,000 allied POWs.
@APhilCollinsFan
@APhilCollinsFan 7 жыл бұрын
interesting , .. theoretically yes they could have won the war without the atomic bomb ! but that remain pure speculation . ... same as to the cost of life , .. on both side ! , ..the war show that both side were stubborn for different reasons and had different view on the meaning of courage and the value of life . you are most probably right about the P.O.W. they would have kill them .. it surprising that a country like Japan old of 2000 years and more . .. talk along centuries about duty , courage and honor , ...and conduct themselves like barbarian , killing , torturing unarmed civilian and army personnel and being awarded medals for this type of action.
