12:30 According to research by the late Nathan Okun (which you can find on Navweaps), the 26" turret face plates on the Yamato Class were the only plates that could not be completely penetrated by any gun ever put on a warship. Even a brand new USN 16"/50 rifle firing late war ammo into the plates at point blank range would always ricochet, though they could hole the plate at that point blank range. Yamato's own 18.1"/45 rifles would completely fail to hole them at any range. The best the 18.1"/45 could hope for was to crack the plates with brute force and repeated impacts. Those simple relative armor calculators on the internet don't accurately depict what happens to large caliber shells when they hit plates at oblique angles, so they are significantly underestimating the effectiveness of Yamato's turret armor. Yamato's turrets are actually *impenetrable from the front.

Yamato is such a classic and reliable ship. It’s survived year after year without any changes and still is a competitive and just great fun to play.

playerbase and getting selective memory loss over anything else about yamato hull when someone mention cheek weakness
@smolnoodleАй бұрын
yamato class armour was designed to shoot broadside and take shots broadside in real life. since all wise and very intelligent wg devs teaching the players that warships fight with tank armour system where the thickest armour is at frontal bow by using armour sloping mechanism. very funny arcade game with F key spells.

Yamato hull feels "bad" because modern BB design in this game doesn't have ANY hull weakness anymore. Cough, Libertad, cough. Yammy hull is objectively fine, it's just compared to the new battleships where you don't even think about showing too much angle, it requires room temp IQ to not randomly take big damage. But as long as you're properly angled, it's one of the better battleship hulls in the game, still. The Yammy cheek is honestly a bit of a meme to me, because the citadel isn't a submarine, but the reality is almost any BB with above water citadel can be "cheeked" at close range around 30 degrees. Ultimately to me it's biggest issue isn't the above water citadel or the cheek but the 32mm upper belt which lets you get absolutely mad farmed by every DD and cruiser including ones with low cal SAP.
@FatFluffyPenguinАй бұрын
Tbh it not that they don't have hull weakness, it more that they shitpiled an enormous amount of gimmick. Aside from Libertard armour scheme which obviously make any other BB look inferior, Yamato is completely fine and still has plenty of armour feature which aside from Kremlin in some department even new BB can't say they all have at the same time. Stuff like the best all-rounder superstructure profile, nice mid-deck which vary between 50-59mm, a 400mm + belt sloped downwards at 20 degrees and still the best armoured turret in the game is things that are still pretty exclusive to Yamato. It is definitely a factor of many new BB design just foregoing the old concepts of "play well and ur armour is good" but I think it more a problem of the community informing their judgement overtly on anecdote and magically getting selective memory loss whenever someone mention 'haha yamato blushing anime girl cheek' and forget about what made Yamato so obscene in 2016-17 that GK had to be designed to stop making people pick Yamato 85% of the time over Montana. Also in regards to the cheek what you say is true but Yamato is uniquely bad in that department as its kind of just about how consistently you can cheek the ship, which make it so Yamato cheek essentially widens the radius in which you can be cit by ships that don't overmatch you. However it's still not difficult to play around. The 32mm midsection side plate is absolutely I agree the biggest real weakness as its the one you can't do anything against in a lot of situations. However it is again pretty easy to playa round by angling, and a lot of other ships have worse midsections so its not so bad. The main thing however that I didn't elaborate enough in the video is how one dimensional Yamato armour design is. There isn't 700 armour gimmicks that you need to know, its just that the hull is incredibly good if you show angle, and measure your engagement. You can turn out to a ship with like sub 450mm pen because you simply have an exposed main belt. You can bow tank something if it doesn't have 32mm overmatch and not care about shell traps or something. There isn't much else to it. It's easy to use, easy to understand, and that simplicity makes it often foolproof in many situations.

@@FatFluffyPenguinmontana armor overall feels a lot better than yamato armor does soley due to the fact it doesnt have as huge of a weakness for a cheek citadel and personally i enjoy fighting yamatos since they mostly dont give as much of a fight in my monty compared to most other bbs especially on a driveby where the heavier salvo weight usually spells the end for yamato more often than not but where yamato armor becomes kind of good is at 13+ km ranges for most ship ap so long as you can bait people into shooting your cheek and then going bow in
@LpDanilo05Ай бұрын
I can only agree with the Thoughts mentioned, you can comfortably play at 12km ~ in Yamato or Shikishima and be fine and very efficent. Keep up the great work and keep on doing these Yapps.

A ship that's punished from certain angles doesn't make it underpowered, that makes it balanced
@FatFluffyPenguinАй бұрын
Yes, basically. GK just set a precedent that from 2016 onwards BBs weren't necessarily going to be balanced around the ethos of "play good and have good armour"
@Fubuki_KaiАй бұрын
Coming from a Yamato player mainly I have never thought that Yamato armor was bad. It's very thick all around so long as she doesn't show flat cheek or broadside you need extremely powerful guns to do big damage to her consistently. It's just that her citadel is large and extends very high above the waterline so its very easy to be punished for a positioning mistake or bad play while other battleships with awkward or gimmicky armor layouts can get away with mistakes more often, so people get the idea that Yamato is poorly protected. Great video.

great video would love to see a yamato class ships secondary build analysis by you
@FatFluffyPenguinАй бұрын
Secondary is simply just not worth it, even on stuff like Shiki. It's nice to have on Shiki, but losing accuracy and other skill don't justify the point of something that only helps you in maybe 15% of situation at most.

I haven't played for a few years now, but my top potential damage game ever was just short of 7 mill, and that was in the Musashi. I basically had a third of the enemy team bouncing shells off me from 15+ km for most of the match.

Yamato hull is an excellent mid-long range artillery plattform. And the 32mm overmatch makes it very potent at close range as long as they cant run into your side. It gets focused out rather easily, it sucks at brawling, but if you get yourself into a real brawl with a yamato youre doing it wrong. That being said dont sit at 26km either ofc. Its just not blatantly op so bb monkeys dont wanna play it anymore. Its very good at some things and really bad at others.
@FatFluffyPenguinАй бұрын
yes, and even if you limit ur engagement to stuff like 1v1 or having to only angle to one side bowing on and reversing Yamato that knows basics of DCP/heal/conceal management is super ass to fight against, because it waste so much of your time to confirm the kill
@atpyro7920Ай бұрын
yamato hull would be considered overpowered if it had vermont acceleration and turning. wait, isn't that what libertard got-
