The messed up thing is fans bringing their own world view into this. Either the one who want to support it or against it. This is a unique case of fictional character in One Piece. Yamato inspired by Oden and associating her whole thing around him including his gender. That's it. Brook is dead but he's alive, how would you describe him? A living being or dead people? He's neither and both at the same time!

"Yamato" is an old name for Japan. It is also an alias. There are so many words like "Yamato Spirit" a term that refers to the spirit, wisdom, and resourcefulness unique to the Japanese people and “Yamato Nadeshiko,” a term that has long been used to describe the virtues demanded of women in Japan. Yamato is not a woman who wants to be a man, but a woman who wants to be “Oden” and was raised as a man. Don’t forget that there are “Boku-girls” in Japan who use “boku” (one of male first person) even though they are fully female and accept their gender.

There is a lot of argument around this topic.. Personally the confusion is because I thought Japanese is a gender neutral language. Although there is masculine / feminine speech it doesn't necessarily equate to he/her pronouns in English like you mention but I guess this would also be the closest way. I can see it from both sides. Just following whatever the anime says at this point 😊

@ I think that's fine. Frankly, I wanted to say that Japanese fans are not as concerned about the gender and designation of Yamato as overseas fans are, that many people have the above interpretation, and that it is not something to be confronted with in discussions. Just as the characters are free, I think that the interpretation could be free to the recipient.

@@JDanime2 I feel like it would be most accurately described that she speaks in mostly feminine, but with some tomboyish mannerisms (boku-girl as mentioned above). The "he" translations in the subs feel blatantly wrong to me and, honestly, the subs often translate things wrong (often on purpose) that I dont fully trust them.

Yeah I didn't like how Oda made Yamato's identity so confusing here. It's like he deliberately wanted to make it complex but it takes away from the understanding of the story. There are three layers here as far as I know: 1) Yamato is a CIS female 2) She spiritually identifies as Oden, not as a male 3) Kaido (and his crew) only acknowledges Yamato as his son. This is unrelated to how Yamato identifies as Oden but adds a masculine element to Yamato Yamato herself doesn't give a lot of context in the beginning - only repeating that she's Oden. Like who would understand her? xD It's not even a culture thing since the characters in the anime get confused too. Oda clearly and deliberately made this more complicated than it should have been

@@terpfen You're assuming things based on no evidence at all. Character flaws have to make sense for the character in question. Carrot admires the Straw Hats and even though she was with them as they explicitly talked about honouring Pedro's victory, she's acting like Perospero was the one who pulled the trigger. Especially considering how her character ends up at the end of the arc, the decision makes no sense from a writing perspective.
