Yami Gautam has been the face of a leading fairness cream brand even before she made her foray into Bollywood. But soon after she debuted with Vicky Donor, the actress was slammed for endorsing a certain beauty standard and racism. Today, as she stands against the social ill in her next film Bala, that aims at normalising the otherwise ridiculous beauty standards that we have set for people, she breaks silence on her reason to endorse the fairness cream and reveals how she had a close door meeting with the team to discuss the issues. Watch the video to find out what she had to say.

The way fairness creams are advertised is changing. Nowadays, the advertisements are way more sensible than what they used to be. Yami herself says that every color is beautiful. In the same way, if someone decides to use a fairness cream in order to have a lighter skin tone, then that is his or her PERSONAL CHOICE. Deep Roy Choudhury Kolkata didn’t show “fair and lovely” ads enough? That brand is vile. Portraying a man or women is not worthy of happiness when it comes to job, marriage, or being loved due to their skin tone is disgusting. Ask the kids who grew up watching them. It’s mentally damaging. I bet the moment a tanning cream advertised the way “fair and lovely” did for decades it wouldn’t stand for a day in the market. But the British company knew what ticked Indians, it was embedded in the culture itself. Hatred towards dark skinned people.

It's pathetic that she is not even apologetic or regretful about her choices. If anything else, she is making HERSELF out to be the victim...oh boohoo the poor things was getting phone calls at 4am from journalists. When you profit from putting people down in society for no reason, you should be called out for it. It's disgusting that she still gets work, in the West she would be out of work for good. And him complimenting her that she is one of the prettiest....lol I see girls on the street prettier than her everyday. We have such stunning actresses and she is one of the ones who is just girl next door average. Make the racist thing go away. And for those who say fairness creams is same as tannings, that is a stupid analogy and a false equivalence. If a person does not use tanning cream and stay fair in the west, no one denigrates them for being fair and projects them as unable to get jobs etc. It's not considered inferior not to tan and to stay fair. Whereas in India, people with sick mentality like her are spreading the message that it IS inferior to stay dark and not to try to get fair. She is disgusting.

This is a confusing answer. First you endorse a brand and then you sit in front of a camera and say that you don't follow the brand's tagline. Like seriously? If you don't believe in that you should stop promoting that brand.. giving such answers only shows how hypocrite you're. Like I don't know... there are plenty of beautiful, talented and professional actresses in the industry but still she gets offers (though pretty less these days). Her behaviour with Urvashi Rautela was really unprofessional in Sanam re.. your ads show a dark girl having all the qualifications to get a job can't get the job for her complexion. After applying the cream she gets fair and gets the job. This is not only humiliating but also unrealistic!

Fairness creams have racist connotations because during olden days white men considered people of color inferior to them, slavery was imposed on people cuz they were black, poc were made to feel they were ugly. Tell me what racist connotations do tanning cream have, do we consider anyone with fairer skin inferior? No. People in the west opt for tanning creams only to show off they have been to exotic vacations where they enjoyed in sun to get tanned unlike others who were toiling in factories away from the sun. Nobody with fair skin is subjected to any kind of racism evn in the west. Tanning creams are just a stupid fad lol You are telling if an adult thinks he wants to be fair to look beautiful it's okay. It's not racism. It's called colorism.Racism is defined as belief of one race is superior than others. In India there is only one race. Fair ,brown and dark skin all belongs to one race. Check on Wikipedia about the definition of racism. Just above it, you can see " Not to be confused with colour discrimination ".Racial discrimination and colour discrimination are two different things. Just as caste system in India. Ambedkar once quoted " caste system is social discrimination within a race ".People are often confusing racial discrimination with colour discrimination.

She said she won't make her career decisions based off of other people's opinions, does no one see how ignorant she is? Not once has she been seen regretting doing such ads, she only plays the victim as if the audience is bullying her. Thanks to you thousands of young girls probably thought they weren't worthy enough because they weren't as light as you. She said doing such ads is fine as long as it doesn't hurt sentiments. really?

I have a question: Actresses who don't endorse fairness creams, in real life do things, makeup and God knows what else to look fair like Kajol, we never see her in her original complexion anymore, Aishwarya Rai sometimes looks fairer than goraaz. Don't you think if they step out in their real complexion everywhere, people are automatically going to love dusky and wheatish skin? They do whatever they can to look fair and then they claim "we don't endorse such creams" where as they are living example of it. Although it's their free will but their changing complexion is giving clear message to use such things. Will it not be helpful if they embrace their complexion like Nandita Das?
