I'm wondering if the reason OR3O's verse wasn't layered was because the character she's playing, the one time she sang, was also dry and unlayered. It's possible the choice was thematic. And to be fair, some folks do listen to and enjoy acoustic/unplugged versions of songs.

OR3O's part does sound weird compared to the others, I think that's exactly why they put her first in the track, especially since Monika's character's singing voice is also dry. I honestly think she did an amazing job portraying that but I don't think some minimal layering would've done too much harm to the impression. I would like to know how that would've sounded with a bit more mixing cause it might've been great.

I understand what you mean about the first part, but I love Or3o’s part because it’s perfect for Monika, it sounds just like her when she sings in the game, which is a very “plain” type of vocal in the game, which shows Monika’s personality.

this the issue I have with people reacting to stuff when they have no idea of the concept of the character of what they're listening to is the don't get whats happening. Oreo's verse was perfectly fitting as if you know Doki Doki Literature Club, the theme of it and her character, the way she did it is perfect it's per character. She nailed it as did all the women and Freeced. So not knowing the concept of what you're going to react to is a complete disservice to the veracity of the performance.

Pretty sure the first verse was done like that on purpose. The character that was being portrayed is named Monika and in her game she traps herself and the player character in a room. Throughout the game you learn that Monika is a learning pianist who wrote her own song and sang it. She didn't have a production studio behind her when she sang in the game and it was a very straightforward performance with only piano and vocals in presumably a small room. The first verse probably didn't have the vocals layered to mimick that "dry" feeling that her singing in the original game had. I think that's why her verse was sung rather than rapped as well.

Dunno if you'll read this but some context for the first verse: Monika sings like that in the ending song for Doki Doki literature club. I know it was a stylistic choice for this song because or3o keeps the melody of Your Reality (that's the song title) you should check it out in your own time. I feel like not knowing that really hinders anyone's listening experience.

I didn't notice anything bad about it the first time but listening to it again while paying attention ('cause first time I had it mostly in the background) yeah I really notice it. Nothing wrong with more raw vocals on a raw track with minimal production but not on a song like this. But that's not OR3O's fault though, she just sings and sends a file; it's on whoever mixed the song.

@@blasianking4827 Well, that's not entirely true. Layering isn't unusual, so either she sent one layer and that's it or the mixer tossed them all. Either way there was a deliberate decision by someone not to layer her verse, so the question is why? I said this in my comment, but the lack of layering does fit Monika's singing and I think it would feel less like Monika if they did layer it, but I do also acknowledge that it sounds a bit out of place on this beat.

Raw vocal singing is preferable to layering and post production mixing. It's important sometimes, but overall. It reduces the genuine vocal ability of singers. Rap should be layered, singing vocals should be raw and untouched, otherwise it reduces the talent

About first verse: Monika was in a lot of rap-battles where her singing (as a character feature) gets her winning card, like, she raps but at the same time hits high notes with a beautiful singing flow. It still lacks good layering because her canon voice is soft and even bland, I might say boring without hitting intonations, but if put good effort in, it can become a masterpiece. As about a good example I think ShiShiShiena in ''Miyuki vs Monika'' did a perfect job (must give credits to StrawberrySana and Ken-chan too)

The first set. Felt like the base setup for the whole song. But the deliberate choice to match the verse to the song from the game and build the reference set into the sound mix itself. Seems to have pulled away from the vocal performance of the artist..... There were several ways to go a slightly different direction. That may have ended up with a somewhat better opener.
