I can tell you are basing this off a manga because this strongly reminds me of one I read with the same premise. Where the girlfriend is so abusive and gave the mc so much stress it caused him to go to the hospital so he dumps her. Just without the murderous yandere part.

Hmm can't make an accurate guess based on the description but it's either two things an Abusive Gf at the start and a creepy yandere later or just an annoying Tsundere. I’d say the reason why Garrett was able to run so freely was because he cut a toxic person out of his life and his mind felt more motivated, so he felt free, running even when it wasn’t completely competitive. (I’m not sure but I have no experience but it’s what I can think of)
