That's so cool. I am American and I had never heard of a hammered dulcimer before now. I feel like I would call it an "American yangqin" if I didn't learn the word "hammered dulcimer" lol

LOVE this instrument, as many others in this family like the Indian Santur and US Hammered Dulcimer. Great video, thank you!
The precision that takes. I wish I could do that, but I can't. Amazing, well done! :)

Wow, what an interesting instrument! I thought the xylophone took amazing control, but her hammers are flexible. It must take a lot of practice to play well. (When she opens the box to show the tuning pegs. Yikes! So many strings to tune.)

This video is a year old, but all of the comments are from fairly recently hahaha. I am looking into buying a hammered dulcimer at the moment, I've been in love with the yangqin for a while now.

Hi! I love this presentation. One question though, does anyone know what the clip like things on the Yangqin is? When she was playing it was moving up and down as if there was some sort of pedal to move it.
@musicconfuciusinstituteatr94314 жыл бұрын
Thanks, great to hear! Yes, those are felt dampers connected to a pedal, very similar to how the sustain pedal on a piano works.

Those qinzhu/yangqin sticks look amazing ~ Where did you buy it from?
@musicconfuciusinstituteatr94313 жыл бұрын
They were Mimi's (the musician's) own qinzhu, so we don't know where she bought them. Qinzhu are made from bamboo and good quality qinzhu should be firm but flexible.

wonderful presentation and very informative! I have recently purchased a very small version of a yangqin but I do not know how to tune it. when it arrives, I'm sure it will be out of tune as it is one I have purchased online from a thrift store but it seems to look in good condition. it is described as a Chinese 38 String Yue Sheng Mini In Soft Case and comes with a tuning key and two bamboo hammers. would you have any idea the key is should be tuned to? what should the first and lowest key be so that I can tune the rest of the strings and is it a diatonic scale? thank you for any advice :-)

Hi Curtis! Thanks for your comments. We're not sure about the 38-string yangqin, if we find any information about it, we'll let you know! In the meantime, you can have a look at how the standard (chromatic) yangqin is tuned: static.wixstatic.com/media/4ed469_4f2c83f3a94048df9284e46cf248e21c~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_747,h_528,al_c,q_85/4ed469_4f2c83f3a94048df9284e46cf248e21c~mv2.webp

Thank you for your instruction! I just wanna confirm that you can play chromatic scale means does Yanhqin have 12 notes in an octave? And can it play in any keys like western instruments? I just wanna confirm since your playing scale was so fast and couldn't hear all the notes :)
@Pio20012 жыл бұрын
The usual "402" yangqin is chromatic (12 notes in an octave) for more than 3 octaves and a half. Mimi's yangqin in this video is a 402G yangqin with an extra chromatic bridge in the bass (4 notes on the bottom right bridge instead of 1), and is chromatic for more than 4 octaves. In the main part of the instrument, it can play any key without problem. But in the top part, some keys become more difficult to play than others. For example, G major is easy from top to bottom. C major is a bit more difficult in the top octave, and easy everywhere else. D major is easy everywhere. But B flat minor is very difficult to play in top and bottom range of the instrument. It only follows the standard minor pattern for 2 octaves (that don't start from B flat).

I get a Yangqin via ebay. It is in good coondition, but terrible out of tune. I would love to tune it and lean it to play. But i am shure, that i need a teacher. Does anybody know teachers in Germany. It is a very unique instrument and i dont find informations here in my country. Thanks for any advice.
@Pio20013 жыл бұрын
Hi Panthusiast, I also got a yangqin recently, here in France. In order to tune it, I got the Android app Boss Tuner and followed the advices of Joshua Messick about tuning the hammered dulcimer, that are also valid for yangqin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGOonWWijZhlidU If the instrument is completely out of tune, you will need the tuning pattern for your yangqin model, as the progression is not always a whole interval for each step. Half intervals occur at the top of the treble bridge and at the bottom of the bass bridge. Then, as a starting point, I watched the yangqin tutorial videos of MrPatrick: kzbin.info/door/faH915mb-Q3iGFnM3zatsQ I don't know if Mimi teaches online. Eason Music Store has a yangqin teacher in Singapore, but, here too, I don't know if he teaches online. You can always ask them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6qbdXaZbLWrkJY
