Yannis Constantinidis (1903-1984) (also as "Giannis Konstantinidis" transcribed), born in Smyrna to Greek parents, studied piano and composition in interwar Berlin. In 1931, he settled in Athens, and embarked on a twofold career: as a songwriter under the pseudonym of Costas Yannidis (an inversion of his real name), and as a composer of classical music under his real name. Despite the fact that the melodic material of the approximately one hundred ‘light’ songs that he wrote is characterized by sheer originality and inspiration, in his serious compositions he avoids original themes, borrowing from the rich tradition of his country, and elaborating these loans within a refined harmonic framework. The 20 Songs of the Greek People for voice and piano (1937-1947) are a typical example, their main source being the folk song collections made by Georgios Pachtikos and Samuel Baud-Bovy among others. No. 19, The Break of Day, (in Lento) a ‘sedentary’ song that comes from the island of Kalymnos in the Dodecanese, was sung by the women at dawn, during the preparations for a traditional wedding.

O Γιάννης Κωνσταντινίδης (1903-1984), γεννημένος από Έλληνες γονείς στη Σμύρνη, σπούδασε πιάνο και σύνθεση στο μεσοπολεμικό Βερολίνο. Το 1931 εγκαταστάθηκε στην Αθήνα για να κάνει διπλή καριέρα: ως τραγουδοποιός με το ψευδώνυμο Κώστας Γιαννίδης (αναστροφή του πραγματικού του ονόματος) και ως συνθέτης κλασικής μουσικής με το πραγματικό του όνομα. Παρόλο που στα περίπου εκατό «ελαφρά» τραγούδια του το μελωδικό υλικό είναι απαράμιλλης πρωτοτυπίας και έμπνευσης, στις κλασικές του συνθέσεις αποφεύγει τη σύνθεση πρωτότυπων μουσικών θεμάτων, προτιμώντας τον δανεισμό υλικού από την πλούσια παράδοση της χώρας του, το οποίο στη συνέχεια επεξεργάζεται σε ένα εκλεπτυσμένο αρμονικό πλαίσιο. Τα Είκοσι τραγούδια του ελληνικού λαού για φωνή και πιάνο (1937-1947) αποτελούν χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αυτής της επιλογής με βασική πηγή τις καταγραφές δημοτικών τραγουδιών από τους Γεώργιο Παχτίκο, Samuel Baud-Bovy κ.ά.
Το καθιστό τραγούδι Μέρα μέρωσε… (αρ. 19) προέρχεται από την Κάλυμνο (Δωδεκανήσα) και το τραγουδούσαν οι γυναίκες τα χαράματα, κατά την προετοιμασία ενός παραδοσιακού γάμου.
