Great talk. Worth it for the last hour especially. I think Objectivist thinkers do best on these kinds of shows when they tie issues down to fundamentals (free will, epistemology, ethics, etc.).

Great interview, and thanks so much for these long conversations (instead of short, edited interviews we see in other media)!! I just wish there was a short introduction to know who he is and how he got there, because I honestly didn't know him before. I'm starting to think on becoming a patreon...

His analysis about why Latinos don’t vote republican is not entirely correct. I am a Latina immigrant and I used to support the Democratic Party mostly because they said to me (like he is doing) that republicans hated people like me. But then I went to the actual source, and I found that actually the Republican’s issue with Latino immigrants was specific to undocumented immigrants because Republicans generally talking are VERY focused on following the law, that’s a very important issue for them, which sometimes (from my point of view) doesn’t allow them to see the complexity of the issues regarding undocumented immigrants, HOWEVER it was not because the majority of them were racist, so I didn’t have to fear them. Also, when I started to listen more carefully the Democrats narrative to Latinos, is was not empowering. They don’t say to us “you can achieve whatever you want if you work hard”; they say to us that we need to be scared of Republicans and that we are a victims of oppression, but fear and victimization only makes you feel powerless and depressed, it is not an empowering speech. While Republicans said the opposite, that if you work hard and respect the law, no matter your background you will achieve your goals. I basically stopped believing that all Republicans were racist people waiting with torches to burn me, and I started to focus on their empowering speech, then I no longer supported the Democrats. I don’t consider myself republican either because I am not religious, I consider myself actually libertarian, but definitely I no longer support the Democrats. When the Democratic Party changes its speech towards a more empowering one with less hate towards the other political party, I will reconsider my political affiliation.

Thank you for sharing this, even if you never see this response. I have been on the opposite side of a story like this several times. People seem shocked that i think illegal immigrants from anywhere are bad for everyone, legal immigrants included, and they just refuse to believe i don't just hate brown people. The more we want a social safety net, the more we have to protect our citizenship standards. it's a vicious cycle, but if we really did have open borders it would have to come with basically no regulations on anything. no food stamps, no socialized healthcare, no student loans, everything the left stand for. These are the things that republicans (conservatives, actually) are trying to protect. otherwise we go back to the Ellis island standard of . "You've got some money in your pocket, so now you're on your own."

There is one important detail in Christian morality. Bible says: serve others and sacrifice. Bible doesn't say: go to your neigbour with guns and force him to serve and sacrifice because he's richer. That's really important distinction. It shows that there is nothing socialistic in Bible - you have the freedom to serve others if you want, you can sacrifice if you want, but you can't force others to do so. There is some virtue in sacrifice - if you buy your wife a gift you're sacrificing something, but you do so out of love, same with raising children - they should be aware, that raising them came with sacrifice - of money, of time etc, but you gain something from that sacrifice. And there is more about self interest - the Parable of the Talents - clearly shows, that your moral duty is to multiply resources that have been given to you. What's more capitalistic than that?

Do prices really go down on computers? The fact that computers today are way better, does not mean that more research, labor or materials have gone into creating them. If it was the case, why arent my socks basically free by now? It's either a bad example, or im missing something.

Njerve1 How do computers get better without more research and labor? How would that ever happen?
@Njerve1
@Njerve1 5 жыл бұрын
@@damonhage7451 I'm thinking more costly in comparison to previous generations of computers. Manufacturers don't start from scratch every time they make an upgrade. Yaron seems to imply that since computers are way better now, but at the same(ish) price, they are actually getting cheaper. But ignoring that the same(ish) amount of materials, labour and time spent in development has been put in to the previous generations of computers
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
Njerve1 Well what your really paying for, is computing power/convenience. The computer itself is somewhat irrelevant. If you judge by this standard, computing power and the convenience of using them has been going up as relates to price.

@@Njerve1 You can buy a computer today for less than 20$. It might be an older model from 2010, but it exists. That's capitalism and its fantastic if you're a poor person making minimum wage.

Yaron: I live in Michigan. There is NO question that we've lost an enormous number of manufacturing jobs! This has been the trend here in Michigan for 40 years! It is dramatic here! We do not hate Mexicans or any other people for it!!! But, we do need to change something to address this, that is for sure! Yaron you're doing a thing that you often do, you are engaging in "mind reading"!! By that I mean that you are assuming that you know the true motivations of people and that the motivations are not those that have been stated. Why do you do that? And in doing it you assume the most uncharitable motivations. For example, you claim that Trump and many Americans hate Mexicans. Prove it. Where is your evidence? You claim to be the big proponent of reason and yet you jump to an unwarranted conclusion based on no real evidence. Give your evidence that saying that people should not come into the country illegally is racist and hateful!!! I hate to say it but are you being slanted because you immigrated to this country? I'm asking, I'm not claiming.

Well, he is a great talker and I agree with about 1/3 of what he says. There is no area in life that does not need to be regulated, that includes capitalism. Can you imagine a baseball, or football, or basketball game without any regulations (rules)? It would be chaos. Humans cannot live a good and peaceful life without rules. He misrepresents socialism and glorifies unregulated capitalism. Ann Rand was a good writer and she wrote some very good novels, but she was not a brilliant political or economic thinker. I enjoyed listening to this talk because it made me rethink some of my own economic and political beliefs.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but the health-care sector is very highly controlled by government, even in the United States.
@chrisknorr1326
@chrisknorr1326 5 жыл бұрын
"...IS not going so well." Do you think the healthcare system in America right now is driven primarily by a free market? Because it's not. It's highly regulated and controlled in very unproductive ways. If the health industry were actually free from government intervention, competition would force prices to fall and quality to rise. That's what happens in a free market.
@stephendanieldrums
@stephendanieldrums 5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisknorr1326 Point taken on your perspective. I guess you could make the argument that if everything but the military was "free market" the world would run smoothly and everyone would either be able to afford basic goods and services based on market forces. And those that can't afford the basics would be taken care of by philanthropy. I do believe in free market economy, but not laissez faire capitalism. At some point, the government is going to be responsible, via the peoples voice, to take on monopolies and cronyism. Their is no "perfect" economic system, a little bit of market regulation can be good for capitalism. That being said, I think a great society would include some social safety nets. Their will always be the sick, the disabled, the elderly, the young, and yes, the lazy in every society. I pay a lot of taxes and put effort in the community. I believe in our constitutional republic and want it to function as an extension of the people. If I walk down the street and get the flu from a homeless person because we are too cheap to treat and address that part of society, then we have failed. If we choose to lift the downtrodden, it will elevate all of us.
@chrisknorr1326
@chrisknorr1326 5 жыл бұрын
You seem quite pragmatic about all this, but in general I think you should be far more wary of the many problems caused by using government force and coercion to achieve your goals. The problems are clearly defined: 1. It undermines correct incentives--basically individuals have less incentive to be productive and create value. 2. It disrupts correct information about the most efficient allocation of scarce resources. 3. It leads directly to corruption in the form of special favors and outright tyranny in the most extreme cases of government control. The first two things you mention as major problems were monopolies and cronyism. I agree these can be problems, but are, of course, only exacerbated by increasing government controls. First, the answer to mitigate the potential problems associated with monopolies is certainly NOT to turn over control of an industry to a government monopoly... Second, the answer to cronyism is making sure government has less ability to manipulate and regulate markets... not more.

INTELLECTUALLY LAZY! I have recommended your talks to others because I trusted you to know what you are talking about and now I see that you don’t even research your subject matter. Anyone who misquotes Trump’s quotes when they are so easy to verify is either dishonest or intellectually lazy. Much of your opinion in this talk is based on a misquote. If you can’t be trusted to correctly quote something this easy to verify, how can I trust your other statements? Do your followers have to double check everything you say? You represent Ayn Rand’s legacy so when you carelessly misquote someone, it reflects on her legacy. You must do better than this.
