Another unusual feature of the camera is that it was available in both right and left hand versions. They were mirrored layouts with the grip and shutter button on the appropriate side. It was definitely quirky.
@nicklatheron8795 Жыл бұрын
Only the Samurai Z and Z2 were sold as left hand versions. (Z/L and Z2/L) the Z/ZL is much better as it includes intervalometer and other "useful" settings.

In the 90s my father loved that camera so much he bought half a dozen for the whole family. I still remember the odd looks from bystanders when I aimed with the samurai. Best regards from Berlin.

Fantastic camera and certainly the best in the series of four from Yashica. Probably the first real bridge camera too. Halfframe is really very close to a whole cinema frame in the space it takes on the film (a bit bigger in fact). Images that used to be blown up on huge screens. The X3.0 is AFAIK the only camera that runs the film through in the correct way for that format. That is, vertically. That means horizontal frames as the default. The autofocus is definitely geared towards daylight or well lit rooms. With that it works very well and as fast as you need for relatively still subjects. A trick for low light that is mentioned in the manual. It is to find a well lit point at approximately the same distance as the one you want in focus, half-press the shutter and recompose. The flash should be on for this naturally. The lens on this is actually very, very good. Yashica where underrated as lens designers and knew how to chose the best manufacturers for the elements. It has many features not mentioned in this video too: - Spotmetering. Probably the only halfframe with this feature. - Date function, which actually looks pretty cool. - standard 49mm filter. Which means you can use any filter with that size you might have. Including diopters and tele extenders which was actually made for this model. - Has build in viewfinder diopter. - Two custom bags, that make it look even more straight out of Back to the Future II or Akira. - Comes in three accent colours. Red, green/turquoise, black, and gold. - Hot shoe, external flash, soft handstrap, are some of the accessories. - Multible focus and exposures modes. Find the manual on Butkus. - There is a “secret” port on the bottom that was never officially used. It’s an external trigger, that some people have used for doing stereo of Multicam setups. Also what other camera can claim to have music written to it by a legend like Ryuichi Sakamoto? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJKZd5dmqLKem6s

Did you know that you can do long exposures with this camera too :-) I found out that it does when I wanted to do a night shoot at Bloodstock festival a couple of years ago. Check it out.... You'll love it :-)

The Samurais are pretty cool but they eventually either clog up with dust around the body of the lens, inside the mirror assembly or somewhere else, and it isn't fixable or cleanable by the user. They weren't designed to last forever and were intended as a gimmicky throwaway product. They were also intended to be regularly serviced at Yashica HQ (I spoke to a bloke who worked at Yashica's long gone UK HQ). As I sadly found out the hard way, as mine only lasted just over a year. Thankfully I only paid £30 for it.
