The early raids were offensive but the trade being conducted by the hostile pagans was the selling, at times, of the stolen properties of the exiled Muslims, in order to amass materials and weapons to exterminate the nascent Muslim community of Madina in a looming war they were planning. These caravans would help the pagans conduct a war against the Muslims so attacking it was necessary so not haram

As I know in proclaimed war, if there's no truce among and enemy is clear, you would better ambush enemies as war strategies suggests. Allah knows better. But I suggest you to look the answer in scholars books, not in comment section, as sometimes questions standing alone might cause mistrust. Allah knows what's hidden in hearts.
