Yasmin Mogahed | What is Love? | 15th MAS ICNA Convention
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
💖Allah says, “And of his signs is that he created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them,” (30:21). A stolen glance here, a text there, a couple laughs. That’s pretty much what society has illustrated love as. Year after year at these conventions we find ourselves talking about what love is and how the prophet used to love his wives. But how about the constant media we’re surrounded by that gives a very different description?
I'm grateful that she delivered a genuine and factual statement about what love is and I don't want to oppose or fight any religion here, everyone has their message, and I might read those and listen to the good stuff they have to say, but I am sorry, you shouldn't tell people to read a certain spiritual book to get clarity in life. My religion has a lot of such books maybe since the beginning of time, but the point is I and anyone else is allowed to read what they want and what they find peaceful and righteous, you shouldn't go around telling people to read Bible or Quran, that would become a conflict.
@@happyshappys Hello Friend.. how are u? I am Aya I wante to tell u something Already there are many religions (islam, christianity, hinduism,buddhism.....) And we agree with me that of course there is only one God who created the whole Great Universes and people... So we all should worship our creator the Almighty God and don't take partners with him(as anyone except him don't deserve worship as they didn't creat us ) So by Logc there is only one creator who is the Almighty God And we all must worship him as he wants and research and read more and more about which religion is the right path to him and wanted by him.. For me, i read a lot amd researched about all relgions years ago, and finally i reached that islam is the true religion and the only right path to Almighty God(Allah)the creator So truelly and honestly, i advise u(as a sister ) to search and read about religions to know by your self which one is the right straight path to Almighty God I hope u all guidance and happiness in yr life ....
Transcript of main speech, part 2 of 2 Bismillah ~ 10:13 This is a lesson you'll always have to remember. Whatever you love most in life, is your master. Simple as that. Whatever you love most in your life is your master. 10:25 If that is money, then you are a slave to money. 10:29 If that is your spouse, then you are a slave to your spouse. 10:32 If it is your children, and now i am talking about something that, its just like, blows your mind. As a woman, especially as a mother. And as a father, we definitely aint taught this. That there is a wrong way to love your children. Why do you think we have so many problems with the mother in law issue? 11:08 They dybamic was unhealthy from day 1. Because that boy, that son of yours was never supposed to be in that part. That part is saved for Allah. You life was never supposed to revolve around your children. 11:29 It's unhealthy. And actually, your life is supposed to revolve around Allah. 11:41 And yes that is why we have an issue then when the son grows up, now he's getting married and all of a sudden there is a competition. There's not supposed to be a competition between a wife and a mom. That doesn't even make any sense. 11:53 But the fact that there is is only because the dynamic from day 1 was unhealthy and it was wrong. They taught you that you're supposed to revolve your life around your son, mainly your son. They taught you, that that's actually how to be a good mum. It's not how to be a good mum. It's unhealthy. 12:13 Your life continues to revolve around Allah whether you're married or unmarried. Whether you're a mother or you're not a mother. And only when your central point in your life is Allah, your greatest and deepest devotion and love is for Allah, only then, and mark my words, only then, will you have healthy relationship with the creation. 12:33 Only then can you have a healthy relationship in a marriage, and with your children, and with your friends, and with your colleagues. Only, only if you're putting everything in the right compartment. 13:03 Allah warns us in the Quran 9:24 قُلْ إِنْ كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَاؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَالٌ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَجِهَادٍ فِي سَبِيلِهِ فَتَرَبَّصُوا حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ Say, "If your parents, your children, your siblings, your spouses, your close relatives, the wealth which you have acquired, a business you fear may decline and the homes you cherish are dearer to you than God and His messenger, and striving in His cause, then just wait until God brings about His command." God does not guide the wicked people. 13:46 Allah warns us if any one of these things is more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger, that's when you face a problem. Because even the halal, if it's loved in the wrong way, will cause much damage. And this damage will be to yourself and others. 14:05 So the first thing i want to say is this, we have to put things in their proper place. When we say Laa ilaaha ilalallah, when we say there is no ilaah except for Allah, what we are saying is that nothing else goes in the core of our hearts and in the core of our lives. Nothing else do we revolve our existence around except for our Creator. 14:27 And that can't be our money, it can't be our business, it can't even be our children or our spouse. It can't be status, it can't be power, it can't be career. It cant be these things. 14:50 How do you that you're loving something in the wrong way? I'm going to give you a very easy way to know. It's going to hurt like heck. It's not going to feel good. 15:12 So the way that you and I will know that we have things in the wrong compartment is that we become tormented by that which we put at the center, where only Allah should be. 15:25 If that is your business, you will not sleep because of your worry about your business. 15:31 If it's your career, you won't be sleeping. You'll need to start taking pills to just calm yourself down. 15:43 If it's your children, same thing is going to happen, they're going to torture you. And i'm not talking about the normal torture. I'm talking a different kind of level of torture, of torment. 15:54 If it's your spouse, even your spouse, you'll know because you'll feel it. You'll feel that pain. And that's Allah swt showing us we need to move things around, we need to put Allah back at the center. 16:36 This concept that your life begins and ends at your son was never healthy. No that's not what it means to be a good mom. What it means to be a good mother is that you have Allah at the center, and then you love your children, and then you love your spouse, and then you love everyone else. But Allah is at the center. You don't put Allah aside, you don't put salah aside cos you got soccer practice. 17:11 Or i got to cook this so i'm missing salah. That means my priorities are off. 17:17 If someone that you love, doesnt like you hijab. Doesnt like it, doesnt look nice. Someone you want to marry, or someone you're already married to doesn't like you hijab. Well, now its a question what's at the center. Because you're being actually told to choose. 17:38 We have to make sure that we have the right thing at the center. If it is not Allah and His messenger, we suffer and then we make others suffer. 18:09 Some other pitfalls that we fall into when it comes to romantic love. One of the big ones is that we focus on the surface and we miss what's inside. 18:30 A lot of times we mistaken, as the sister said, what i call surface romance, we mistaken surface romance for deep connection. And the two are very very different. 18:43 You might have a man, or a woman, who does these things for you. These things, these gestures that the sister was mentioning, the roses and the surprises and all of that. And you may believe that that means that you have a connection. But there is a very very big difference between surface romance and deep connection. 19:06 Deep connection is about compatibility, deep connection is about vulnerability, deep connection cannot only just be in these gestures. So i advise you and all those who are looking, for example for marriage, to look deeper. 19:26 And one last thing i want to say, I will tell you and everyone who advises you will tell you, look for deen, look for character. Absolutely those are a must. 19:37 But i will also tell you that it is not enough. 19:52 There are many examples, namely in our tradition we know for example, great people Zaid and Zainab, they were both amazing characters, they both had amazing morals and deen. But they were not compatible, they were not compatible and so they got divorced. 20:12 So what i want to say to you is that yes you look for deen, yes you look for character, it is necessary but not sufficient. 20:21 It is not sufficient, you have to, have to, and i cannot emphasize this enough, you have to look for compatibility. You have to look for compatibility. And i'm not just talking about surface compatibility. 20:32 I'm not just talking about "i'm from egypt, he's from egypt and so we're compatible". That's not what I'm talking about. 20:39 I'm talking about a deeper level of compatibility, and that's again a whole other discussion.
Dear Sir! Your wife before marrying you was enjoying her parents' love and kindness. Now that she has entered into marriage agreement with you and now that she has chosen to live with you for the rest of her life, she expects you to fulfill her desires for love and affection. She expects you to show more love to her than she received from her parents and friends. She has trusted you extremely and that is why she has entrusted you with her existence. The secret to a happy marriage is the expression of your affection to your wife. If you want to conquer her heart, if you want to make her obedient with regard to your demands, if you want to strengthen your marriage, make her love you and remain faithful to you, or..., then you must always show your affection to her and express your love. If you deprive your wife of kindness, then she would lose interest in her house, children and, above all, in you. Your house would always be in a messy condition. She would not be prepared to make efforts for a person who does not love her. A house, in which there is no affection, resembles a burning hell, even though it may be very tidy and full of luxurious goods. Your wife may become ill or have a nervous breakdown. She may seek popularity with others if she is not satisfied with you. She may grow so cold towards you and the house that she may even seek for a divorce. You are responsible for all this because you have failed to keep her content. It is certainly true that some divorce procedures take place as a result of unkindliness. Your attention is drawn to the following statistics. The psychological requirement of affection, the carelessness of husbands with regard to their wives' wishes and the overlooking of the importance of the mental status of women, have been responsible for many divorce cases. "In the year 1969, out of a total of 10372 separations, 1203 women expressed the reason for their divorce as losing heart in life, feeling worthless, and the lack of care of their husband with regard to their wives' desires and emotional feelings." 2 "A woman said in court that 'She was prepared to abandon her dowry and even pay her husband a sum of money to make him agree to a divorce. She said her husband was more interested in his parrots and that was why she did not want to live with him any longer."3 Family love and friendship is more precious than anything else and that is why Allah has regarded it as one of the signs of power and a great blessing which mankind has been endowed with, Holy Qur'an says: وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ "..And one of His signs is that He created mates for you from yourselves that you may find rest in them and He put between you love and compassion; most surely there are signs in this for a people who reflect." (30:21) "Imam as-Sadiq (a.s) stated: 'Whoever is our friend, expresses his kindness to his spouse more'." 4 "The Prophet of Allah (S) stated: 'The more one becomes faithful the more one expresses kindness to his spouse'." 5 "Imam as-Sadiq (a.s) stated: 'One of the characteristics of the prophets of Allah is that they are all kind towards their wives'," 6 "The Prophet of Allah (S) stated: 'The words of a man who tells his wife, 'I love you truly', should never leave her heart'." 7 Love and affection must of course be genuine to appeal to another's heart, but even so loving for someone is not enough, as it is vital to express one's affection. By showing your feelings through your words and actions, the love you have shown will be returned to you and your hearts will strengthen their bonds of love. Be frank and do not be discrete in expressing your love towards your wife. In her absence or presence, you should make compliments for her. Write to her while traveling and inform her that you miss her. Occasionally buy something for her. Phone her when you are at work and ask how she is. One of the important things on a woman's mind is these kinds of expressions of love. "Mrs... while shedding tears of grief said: 'I married my husband on an autumn night. We lived together in peace for a while. I regarded myself as the luckiest woman in this world. I lived in his little house for six years. I felt a hundred times happier when I found out that I was pregnant. When I informed my husband he wept tears of joy while embracing me in his arms. He cried so much that he nearly lost control over himself. He then went out and bought me a diamond necklace with his savings. He gave the necklace and said: 'I am giving this to the best woman that I have ever seen in the world'. But it was not long before he was killed in a driving accident'.
Transcript of main speech, part 1 of 2 Bismillah ~ 0:50 I truly believe that there isn't a more important conversation. And that's a big statement. I do not believe there is a more important conversation than this conversation, which is What is Love? 1:02 And I'm going to tell you why I believe this is such an important conversation, in fact the most important conversation we can have as human beings. 1:10 And that is because the way that our Creator designed us, is that our greatest and most powerful motivator is love. This is our fitrah, this is our design. 1:26 It is love, ironically, for the wrong things that make nations go and bomb other nations. It is love of power. It is love of wealth. It is love of domination. 1:58 If we love the wrong things in the wrong way, we can actually destroy the world. 2:13 We have entire governments, entire nations, that have no problem killing women and children because they love to stay in power. 2:32 This is a very deeply important topic. We need to understand what love actually is and how loving in the wrong way can in fact not only destroy you, but can destroy the world. 2:57 Now in the topic of romantic love, i'm going to say a few things. I'm going to list a few mistakes that we make. Or a few pitfalls that we fall into, under this topic of romantic love. 3:27 Allah swt created love, and i'm going to put it this way, Allah created different kinds of love. 3:39 Allah created different compartments within our heart to contain love, and different kinds of love. 4:00 There are different compartments within the heart, and each compartment is created for a specific kind of love. And as long as you keep everything in its proper compartment you'll be ok. But the moment that you put things in the wrong compartment within your heart, that is when the real damage happens. 5:26 A gas tank is only created to only be able to handle gas filling it up. But if you put orange juice in that gas tank, you destroy the gas tank and destroy the entire car. Now what does that have to do with the human heart? 5:38 See there is this part in the heart, and i will call it the lobe of the heart. It is the verymost central, most inner part of the heart. This isn't normal love. No, this is the center of our existence. This is what i live for and what i will die for. This isn't just love, it's worship. It's the kind of love that becomes worship. But it's not worship in the sense that you're praying to this thing. People don't pray to money, but they worship money. And the reason why they do that is because their love of money is in the central part of their heart that was only created for the love of God. 6:19 Within the human heart, there is a innermost part that is like a gas tank. It's only created for gas. In the case of the heart, its only created for the love of God, Allah. In other words, i'm going to call this an ilaah. 7:00 There is nothing that goes in the core of the heart except for Allah, except for God. Whatever language you want to say it. 7:09 The Creator, The Ultimate Almighty is the only one who goes in that central part of my heart and of my life. That is what Laa ilaah ilallah is at a core level. 7:19 And that is why a person will become destroyed, destroyed, if they put anything else in that core level. 7:32 Just like the car becomes destroyed because you put orange juice in the gas tank, a human being, a society, a family, the entire world becomes destroyed if you put anything else in that core level other than God. What does that mean? 7:52 It means if i put money there, it means if i put status there, it means if i put power there, it means even if i put another person there. 8:14 I was taught, you just love, love is always just it. I wasn't taught that there's a wrong and a right way to love. In my islamic upbringing, this was not taught to me, and i had to learn it the hard way. 8:46 I'm telling you, don't do it. Because what happens is even another human being, and i'm talking now your spouse.. you're supposed to love your spouse. But if you put your spouse in that central most part the heart that is saved for Allah, and i'll give you examples, you will actually be destroyed. And when i say you will be destroyed, i mean that you will endure a lot of pain. Let's just put it that way. You will endure a lot of pain and you actually cause a lot of pain. 9:19 Because Allah did not create the human heart to have the capacity to even contain anything else in that central part of your heart. It's like taking something other than Allah and making it an ilaah. 9:42 An ilaah is essentially, it its root, if you study the term, you study the root of the word ilaah, you see that it is anything that you put at the center of your existence. 9:53 It becomes that which dictates every single thing that you do or don't do. It dictates why you live, why you die. It dictates how you act and how you don't act. An ilaah is a master.
its not just about are you at a age but are you mentally ready for marriage, you have to work hard on being the best version of yourself and know you are mentally strong for something real. marriage aint a game, and it gets upsetting when people just throw around "go get married" thats how despression happens and divorce
I feel that’s the beauty of this religion and the realization that Allah is the only true God. It’s that you begin to realize that everything you encounter or come across in this life is never a coincidence. Everything is legitimately happening for a reason, and at a specified given time. Everything is written.
