I mean from my 2021 stand-point Abdusattorov, Esipenko, and especially Alireza are good contendors. But since Magnus has been getting worse against his equally aged peers since he lost FR, Blitz, and Rapid championships. So it may well be someone like Caruana.

The next World Champion is obviously gonna be Firouzja, whether he gets the title in the next 2 years or the next 15 years, it'll definitely be him. We have to see how Sarin, Xiong, Esipenko, etc's careers turn out, maybe one of them will take the title from him at some point. But at this moment it's fairly obvious that the very next WC will be Firouzja

Why is it fairly obvious? To become world champion, Firouzja has to 1) Qualify for the Candidates 2) Win the Candidates 3) (as it stands) beat Carlsen Even if he managed 1 and 2, which aren't easy, his record against Carlsen in classical leaves a lot to be desired. If someone beats Magnus in the next 10 years to win the title then right now I'd have to put my money on Wesley. He's probably about 5th-6th in the world when it comes to Classical Chess but crucially, he's the closest to Magnus in terms of rapid chess which is the first tie-breaker. But I certainly wouldn't say it's "fairly obvious" the next world champion would be Wesley.

As for 1, there's next to no doubt whatsoever that he'll do that soon enough, with this trajectory he'll make the next Candidages for sure 2 certainly isn't easy but he can definitely do it if he keeps improving at this rate. It'd be concerning for Carlsen if his record against a 17 year old whom he first played at age 16 was any worse than it is rn. The question is, who else stands a real chance? Nobody in this generation of players has proven capable of 2 and 3, and Alireza is by far and away the most talented super GM in the world atm aside from Carlsen himself and arguably Rapport. Why would you think Wesley stands a chance? His score against Carlsen is atrocious and he's extremely inconsistent in tournament play. He's 9th in the world in Classical rn, MVL, Ding, and Nakamura are closer in rapid. You woudln't say that about Wesley because it's extremely obvious that it won't be him or amybody else from Magnus' generation. Again, I'm nkt saying Firouzja would beat him in a classical match tomorrow, but that when Magnus eventually loses his title, if it doesn't happen in Fischer-esque fashion, then Firouzja is obviously going to be the one to take it from him, b/c nobody else conceivably can

@@joedorben3504 i was half on board with you but your argument ran out of steam completely when you mentioned Rapport 😂 Your argument seems to be vased entirely on rating which, though gives an indication of how well a player's played recently, cannot be used as a reliable yardstick when so little OTB chess has been played in the last year and a half. I mentioned Wesley because he's got form of winning major tournaments (he's won Tata Steel, Sinquefield and London), he's beaten Magnus in the Chess960 final which is a great test of a player's chess intuition and in the recent Magnus events, he has held the upper hand (rapid events). You cannot say "well he's ranked lower than player a or player b" in rapid - look what's happening now! He's winning all the rapid events. I'm not saying I'm going to be right in that. But at least I have backed up my assertion with evidence and havent come out with grandiose comments like "it's obviously going to be Alireza" In fact why couldnt the next WC be Fabi or Ding? Particularly Ding. He is incredibly strong in both classical and rapid.

I like the idea of rating things that we do on a chess scale kind of like what Yasser did with the other board games that he likes to play, -never thought of doing that. So if somebody would ask me how good am I at riding a bicycle or how much do I like bicycling, since this is another hobby of mine, and if the person asking knows anything about chess, then I can answer, "I think I'm probably around an 1800 when it comes to bicycing!" I find this amusing. Loving the Q & A videos!

Go and other competitive board games actually use elo too, but with their respective player bases, so the values might be different. So chess elo values can't really be used to measure strength in anything but chess. You would have to determine bicycle elo based on other cyclists yourself.

I think there is a very boring answer to the question of the strongest player never ending up world champion (yet): Fabiano Caruana. Over time, chess has evolved and chess players have gotten stronger. Fabi would probably win with a very high score against Kortschnoi from back then. Fabiano, over the course of his career, in the match, and in rating, had more success than the other recent challengers.
