The smile foreshadowing happens all the way back in Saboady Archipelago arc, when Luffy punches the celestial dragon and Disco, the shop owner calls Doflamingo. Doflamingo name drops smile saying it is the age of smiles. Oda had the twisted idea from as long back as then.

Oda made the best out of Yasuie’s death. Not only did he reset the rebellion to give us another chance, he also used him as plot point about the side effects of a failed SMILE fruit. Oh it also added another layer of evil to Orochi but I’d clap that dude for free at this point.
