Modern katanas made today are more like a piece of art not as deadly as the early days when samurai who rule the lands in japan.

Gives a real sense of how hard that steel is, and of the mass of the blade. Once the mirror finish is on it, it looks like a decoration almost, shiny and reflecting. Seeing it unfinished, in the raw, as it were, watching the tedium of working it in its cold state, gives a real sense of it's brute strength. I've filed some metals before, and they go easily, compared to that thing - that's what it looks like on a video - I've never held or touched one.

A man, is doing something with his own hands... he shows it to everybody and most people are complaining and pointing the finger.... I can't understand why, just watch his devotion to what he is doing , don't waste any second to improve the silence and say thank you for being allowed to whitness it. (Google translation: 男が自分の手で何かをしている...彼はそれをやっている、彼はそれをやっている t沈黙を改善するために少しの時間を無駄にし、それを白くすることを許可されてくれてありがとうと言う。ご多幸を祈る !) .
A master craftsman who doesn’t know how to use a file? Wtf? Forward strokes only. Back strokes will dull your file 5 times faster than if u only use forward strokes. I’m super surprised he doesn’t know that. Files are designed that way. I wonder though... maybe it’s a special blacksmith file or something. This guy has mad skill. His work is beyond great.

If you're willing to risk sacrilege by using a power hammer, why not also use a power sander and grinder? Would certainly make shorter work of this portion.

Power hammers have been used since the early 1800s in Japan. It's not sacrilege nor untraditional to use a power hammer.

I m not doubting his skills at all (he’s amazing to watch) but I was always taught not to hammer cold steel? Was it because he had it on that aluminum-ey looking disc?
@MusashiSush16 жыл бұрын
ieat caribou I was thinking the same thing, you don’t hammer cold steel. Also he seems to have to do a lot of filing which could be avoided if his forging technique was better, that blade was rough.
@machinegunpreacher24695 жыл бұрын
You can't just leave a crude, rough and sharp edge on the side of the blade. He was using the hammer to smooth out the angle; and no, it doesn't hurt a thing, in the next step (I'm assuming it will be shown in part 4) is the final tempering and heat treatment. At that point no more hammering should be done. And if you have ever forged *anything*, you know that grinding is always done (with a file or powered machines, or both) on every single blade that has ever been forged. How much, depends on the blade type, material and yes, the skill of the smith, but it is always done. In another video you can see Yoshindo Yoshihara, one of the finest swordsmiths of our time, doing the same thing. Nobody can hammer out a finished product, it's a physical impossibility, there is always filing and final shaping involved in forging blades.
@jackavalon83665 жыл бұрын
Yes, it hasn't been hardened yet so it's OK to hammer it at that point

i think all this hard work is to make a show piece katana, this is not the way of making a katana, it is just imitation of katana, actual katana maker will not sleep for days. people should watch original katana making and the traditional way of grinding. it takes years to learn the technique to sharp the katana and every katana comes with it own signature.
