Good job! I like making that exact hat and I also like to make two different hats in one. I go for 40 rows with one pattern or color, and then forty rows with black or white (or something that goes with both but a plain color) and then I go for 40 rows with a different pattern or a color that I like. That way, the brim is always the same but you have two different hats, sort of...LOL! It's still 120rows, like the Hat you did in this video. I have a very large head and I cannot wear the Addi hats. I bought a Sentro and it will fits me if I use real soft yarn that stretches nicely.

Yay For Yarn me too because knitting an adult size hat is kind of hard for me to do just right. I think I'm going to like my knew machine after I saw your videos. Can you use real yarn like the kind that comes from a sheep or another animal too?
@YayForYarn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebekah. Yes, you can use most types of fibers in these machines, such as synthetics, or animal fibers like wool, alpaca, & etc. The main qualification for a yarn that will work in the Addi is the weight category. Yarns from the #2 Fine category to the #5 Bulky category will work best. Some #1 Superfine / Fingering weight yarns can work, but a #6 Super Bulky is too thick for the needles to catch without splitting the yarn. If a yarn is dropping or tucking stitches (which can be fixed if it happens, I have videos on how to fix those), the problem is not usually the yarn. I have found that those issues can usually be corrected by putting a little more or less tension on the yarn as it feeds through your hand into the yarn guide. The only kind of yarn my machine will not take is a #4 Worsted weight 100% cotton. Cotton blends, such as cotton and acrylic or similar, seem to work ok. Size 3 or 5 cotton crochet thread also works in my machine (I have a video on that as well). But the #4 Worsted Weight 100% cotton does not have enough stretch to it to be used in the Addi. Generally, if you come across a yarn that is dropping stitches, put a bit of tension on it with your hand as it feeds into the machine. That will usually correct any issues with dropping or tucking stitches, and produces a more consistent, even knitted fabric. If you are wanting to make adult size hats, I also have a video on making a simple hat with a ribbed brim: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3-pZWWIZ9Sfo9k If you follow the link in the description box of that video to my blog post for that hat, you will find my size / measurement chart for making hats of all sizes, from baby to adult sizes. Hope this helps! Thanks!

I love to work in mohair, silk, merino, cashmere, alpaca and lambswool/mohair. these accessories are perfect for layering under a windbreaker/rain jacket. I have been knitting by hand since 1986. An older friend got me interested and demonstrated a few French and Italian couture cast-on/off and finishing techniques, and I was hooked. Then I worked at I.Magnin in San Francisco and spent years examining expensive luxury knitwear. I am currently working on building a knitting loom with 168 4mm bamboo pins. Thank you for the video. This was good review for me because I've made a lot of hats. But I keep forgetting how many rows for each size of hat. What would you use for a baby/toddler hat? And please tell people who buy the Sentro knitting machine that it has a slightly larger gauge and more needles so it makes a hat for bigger heads like mine! I love mine!
@YayForYarn3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Since the length of the tube depends on the gauge as well as the number of rows, I recommend going by the length of the tube rather than the number of rows when making a specific size. I have a chart of how long to make the single layer hats without a brim here: yayforyarn.com/how-to-knit-a-basic-hat-on-your-addi-king-knitting-machine/ Since that info is for a single layer hat with no brim, then when making the reversible hat with a brim, you'll need to add 2"-3" to the length for the brim, and then double that length for the total length of the tube. (You can make half of the total length of the tube a different color if you like.) I hope this helps!

This is awesome. Can you think of a hand knitting way to make the same project?
@YayForYarn4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jill. You could knit this by hand if you wanted to. You would start with a provisional cast on, and knit a tube in the round until it is twice the length you want the finished hat to be, plus 4 or 5 inches for the brim to fold up. Then, you would turn the tube inside itself so the live stitches and the provisional cast on edge are together. You could then cinch both ends of the tube closed and finish the hat as shown in the video. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much, Patricia! I am so glad you enjoyed the video! I do have several quick and easy scarf tutorials on my channel, a flat scarf: kzbin.info/www/bejne/en6chXZ7pNybbZo Super Scarf (basically 2 flat scarves put together to make an extra wide scarf): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGSUnoepepeLlcU and an Infinity Scarf: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inTcfKKrm7idibc The flat scarf and the infinity scarf have the ends finished / joined with grafting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZC2ooGVpZtniqs If you don't want to graft the ends of a flat scarf, you can crochet across the ends as I did in the Super Scarf video. Or, you can pull on the cast-on tail and bind-off tail to cinch the ends of the scarf closed, make a few knots to secure, and attach a pom pom to each end. If you want to make an infinity scarf without grafting, you can also cinch the ends tightly closed and sew them together. If you want, you could also knit an embellishment on your Addi to attach to the place where you joined the ends, such as a bow: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJa2eKOGoqyWors a flower: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoC4dmWsmbmmfJo a rose: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opaxpWRmZdmFbbM or a large button. Hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!

I have made many scarves on the Addi King. They're quite wide but very warm and nice. Do it exactly as you do the hat, but much longer. You can either pull the ends like you do the hat and add a pom pom or you can lay them flat and sew them together to put Fringe on the end. Have fun!

Does it matter if you don't start at the first black needle?
@YayForYarn3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, it is recommended to start at the first black needle, because this black needle triggers the row counter to click. If you start on another needle, the machine will still count rows starting with the black needle. It wouldn't necessarily hurt anything to start on a different needle, but if you are counting your rows, I recommend starting on the first black needle. I hope this helps!

Different yarns have different gauge, even when they're all labeled "worsted". It would help to know how many inches, in total, to knit. I've done gauge tests on a few yarns and know now how many rows/inch I will get.
@YayForYarn8 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah. At 0:50 into the video, I just briefly discuss sizing, but at 1:39 in the video, I show how to measure the length of the knitting while it is still on the machine. At 11:55 I measure the finished hat. A finished adult sized hat should be about 11"-12" long to fit most adult sized heads and give a 2"-3" brim. If you put the same length hat on a smaller head, you will just get a wider brim when it is rolled up. So if you are knitting a hat with the same color inside and out, you would knit a tube about 22"-24" long. If you are knitting a hat with one color on the inside and another color on the outside, you would knit about 11"-12" with the first color and 11"-12" with the second color. Either way, you would then finish the hat as shown in the video. Just remember that when you measure the length of your tube while still on the machine, it will always measure a little shorter than it really is, because the top is stretched on the machine. Hope this helps!
@DeborahParsons8 жыл бұрын

This cap for adult or for keds thanks
@YayForYarn3 жыл бұрын
Hi! This hat can fit adults or kids, depending on what type of yarn you use, how stretchy your fabric is, and how long you knit your tube. You can use up to a size 5 Bulky weight yarn on this machine, which will make the stitches larger, and therefore make the hat larger. However, a worsted weight yarn may make a hat that will fit an adult, depending on the size of the wearer's head and the tension / stretch in the knitted fabric. The best way to find a fit that works best for you is to just play with different yarns and different amounts of tension in your hand as you feed the yarn into the machine. I hope this helps!

@@YayForYarn please teach me if i buy a yarn what kind of yarn i buy thank you

You'll need a soft, smooth yarn. For a hat, I recommend a #4 Medium weight or a #5 Bulky weight yarn. These tend to work best for hats. Also, make sure your yarn is not 100% cotton, as pure cotton yarns do not work well on these knitting machines at all. I hope this helps!

@YayForYarn6 жыл бұрын
Hi! 100 grams of yarn would not be enough for a hat and scarf. If you are just making a hat, this hat will usually take a bit more than 100 grams of yarn. You would probably need about 110 to 120 grams for this hat only. If you want a matching scarf, my infinity scarf kzbin.info/www/bejne/inTcfKKrm7idibc will take at least 140 grams, and a straight scarf kzbin.info/www/bejne/en6chXZ7pNybbZo would take at least 200 grams. How can I make the tube wider for large head. because I want the hat to have more room to make slouchy shape. Should I knit in a flat way to make wider and close it. I want to make in circle but hat has to be big around
@YayForYarn5 жыл бұрын
Hi. If you want to make a much slouchier hat, you could try making two flat panels and sewing them together. I would recommend decreasing some stitches as you get closer to the cuff, and doing a bit of ribbing at the bottom. For a slouchy shape, you'll want each panel to be worked across more than half of the stitches on the machine. I hope this helps!

If you have closed both ends of your tube, that is fine. Both ends of the tube need to be closed. Then, you take one closed end, and put it inside the other closed end, and tack them together as shown in the video. I hope this helps!

Hi Karen. The number of rows will depend on the size of the child's head, the size of your yarn, and how much tension you put on the yarn as you knit. I would recommend making a tube about 20" long in total, and making a hat from it to test the size and see how you like the fit. I hope this helps!

Wasn't there a knot on your cast on edge so you couldn't just pull it like a drawstring?
@YayForYarn4 жыл бұрын
No, unless you tie a knot at the end of your cast on (which I do not recommend), it should pull freely to cinch the hat closed. The cast on shown in the instruction manual is not a permanent edge finish, so can be cinched like this. Since it is the same yarn used in the following rows of the tube, the tail will not come unattached when you pull it like a drawstring. I hope this helps!

Do you need to use a curtain yarn to make a large or extra large hat with the Addi King?
@YayForYarn7 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie. You don't have to have a specific yarn to make a larger hat. The size of the hat is not just affected by the thickness of the yarn you are using, but it is also affected by your tension. Using a #5 Bulky weight yarn instead of #4 Worsted weight can make the hat larger. Putting less tension on the yarn as it feeds into the machine can also make the fabric looser and stretchier, therefore creating a larger hat. Hope this helps! Thanks!

I used red heart and I did 150 rounds and my husband says it’s not long enough but he doesn’t have that big of a head, any suggestions
@YayForYarn5 жыл бұрын
The number of rounds can vary depending on the tension you're putting on the yarn. If you're putting more tension on it, it can slightly decrease the circumference of the tube. When you put the hat on, it stretches width-wise and shrinks a bit length-wise. So, even if you don't have the same number of rows as I did, it's ok. Just do however many rows works best for you. Hope this helps!

Hi How many pins 46 or 48?
@YayForYarn2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The Addi King knitting machine has 46 needles, but if your machine has 48, that is fine. You can still follow the same instructions, it will just produce a hat that is 2 stitches larger. I hope this helps!

hi i got to use this machine and i did what you did but mine wasnt big enough for adult what weight yarn are you using and what tension are you doing with left hand
@YayForYarn5 жыл бұрын
Hi Loretta. I used #4 Worsted Weight yarn for this hat. If you want to make a larger hat, try using #5 Bulky weight yarn. I have a video on tensioning the yarn by hand here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqeXiGSFndKogMU I hope this helps!

Beautiful!! Does this machine make baby hats too?
@YayForYarn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alice! Yes, this machine can make baby hats. Here is my size chart for making hats of different sizes on the Addi King: yayforyarn.com/how-to-knit-a-basic-hat-on-your-addi-king-knitting-machine/ Different sizes can be made by using thicker / thinner yarn and adjusting the amount of tension you put on the yarn as you knit. The chart also includes info on the hat length. Please note that the chart is for a hat that is only one layer thick, not a double thick reversible hat as in the video above. If you want to make a double thick reversible hat using the size chart for the single layer hat, you will need to make the double thick version slightly larger than the suggested measurements on the chart. This will compensate for the extra thickness of the double thick hat. Hope this helps! Thanks!

What yarn used I am gonna get one for my birthday
@YayForYarn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Molika! For this project, I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn, but you can use any worsted weight, DK weight, or bulky weight yarn you would like. The thickness of the yarn can affect the finished size of the hat, so I would recommend using DK for children's hats, worsted for smaller adult hats, and bulky for larger adult hats. Please see my Addi Knitting Machine playlist (kzbin.info/aero/PLmcTBVSjUYHFayPYY0LY9kvv5mp-4UeJ4) for more tips, tricks, and projects you may like to try on your new machine. Hope this helps! Thanks!

How many rows would I use for a younger child, say a 12-14 year old?
@YayForYarn7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kay. The actual number of rows will depend on the yarn and tension you are using, so I like to measure the length in inches (or centimeters) rather than rows. The video shows how to accurately measure the length of your knitting while it is still on the machine. An average sized 12-14 year old child can usually wear an adult sized hat, so you can probably just make an adult sized hat. These knitted hats are nice and stretchy. Even if the child has a smaller head and the hat is slightly longer than necessary, you can just fold the brim up a little bit more. Also, as the child grows, you can fold the brim up a little less to make the hat longer. Hope this helps! Thanks!

I need help closing the top and keeping it from knotting up. Help!!
@YayForYarn7 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie. Are you having a problem with the cast on end or the bind off end? If the cast on is worked too tightly, sometimes the Addi needles can split the cast on yarn. As a result, a stitch on the first row can be knit splitting through the cast on yarn. This keeps the cast on yarn from being pulled when you go to cinch the end closed, as a stitch is going through the middle of it. I have also had problems with Red Heart Super Saver getting stuck on itself. The fuzz of one piece of yarn can get intertwined with the fuzz of another piece of yarn, and the two yarns get stuck together and have to be pulled hard to get them to come apart. Are either of these what is causing the problem? If not, please let me know and I will try to figure out what the problem is. I am happy to help! Thanks!

I'm trying to sew the top of hat closed without it feeling like a big knot on top.
@YayForYarn7 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie. The top of the hat will naturally be thicker and denser where it is cinched, as you are taking about 20" of fabric and cinching it down to a little hole about 3/4" in circumference. To minimize the thickness, I usually just tack the layers together 3 or 4 times after cinching, so as not to add any more thickness than necessary. If you want a thinner, single-layer, non-reversible hat, you can make the tube half as long as you would for a reversible hat. You would then cinch the first end only, then bind off around the edge of the second end with whatever bind off you prefer. This bind off is fairly easy and is done with a crochet hook: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g16zimNvq76Xpc0 This method will create a single-layer hat that will be less bulky. The cinched part will be less bulky as well. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Hi Maggie, if you like to be a bit creative, you can also remove the stitches with a waste yarn and then pick them up to cicular knitting needles with a 16" cable, and slowly knit a few stitches together ( I usally do knit four, k2tog and keep going around and around unitl you cannot use the circluar kntting needles anymore. Then move to double pointed needles and go and go on until only a few stitches are left, then cut a long enough tail to weave thru the remaining stitches. Usually you are left with about 6-8 stitches which when pulled together does not even make a noticeable opening on the top of the hat, when it is pulled closed. HOpe this helps you.

How many needles your machine have to make this hat for adult or for man? I love your videos. You are very sweety.

Thank you! I use the Addi King Knitting Machine (46 needles) for making hats. The size of the hat can be customized by using different thicknesses of yarn, or changing the amount of tension you put on the yarn as it feeds into the machine. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Can used the yarn any knitting machine this my gonna be frist time
@YayForYarn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Molika. I have not used any other knitting machines besides the Addi Knitting Machines. But, there are several other similar knitting machines available, and they can be used with the same techniques that I use on the Addi. I have found that the Addi knitting machines work best with sport weight, dk weight, worsted weight, and bulky weight yarns. If the machine starts dropping, tucking, or splitting stitches with a certain yarn, you can use this technique (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqeXiGSFndKogMU) to correct the problem and continue using the yarn on your machine. Hope this helps!

are you sure this hat is for an adult?
@YayForYarn4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Although hats made from worsted weight yarn on this machine tend to be a little small for some adults, you can make them larger. Just use a #5 Bulky weight yarn, which produces a larger hat on the same number of needles. I hope this helps!
