I miss seeing you in class father carlisle. You were one of the best teachers the county had. On a side note i still get chills to this day when i think about the witch.

My great grandmother took me and my two brothers to that graveyard. That was in the mid 1950’s. The white part of the cemetery was kept beautifully manicured. However the blacks, or colored part, as was the term used at that time, was not kept too well. The so called witch was buried there and the chains were pinned down on the ground across the stone. When my Madea told the lady’s story, it was nothing like the how whites tell it now. The story was that the white people wanted the woman’s prime land. The men came in the night with torches and guns. The old woman took to the woods to hide. But the men found her and forced her into the quicksand. Her cries for help fell on death ears. As she was going down, the old woman put a curse on those men and the city predicting that those men would be dead within 20 years time and the city destroyed by fire. As Madea told the old lady’s story, I wondered to myself, how in the world would those chains hold a spirit down. Made no sense to me, a girl of 11 years old. Plus it’s funny how the story changed, especially after the movie My dog skip came out. I was amused to see that the old woman had a place in a mausoleum in the white part of the cemetery in the movie. Laughable.

I have actually heard this story told with the quick sand and the other about the dead people. Both stories end with the curse and that Yazoo City would burn which it did by the way.

I was told no blacks were buried there but glad to know some new truth to the story and about how the black side upkeep is rejected. My family is from here and many still live there in yazoo. But none was buried at that funeral home last I recall.

When I was a freshman in h.s. We were triple dating one night. We all been discussing the witch stories . We were all walking towards the grave . The main driver slipped off got in the car and left us. The guys squealed louder than the girls. Good thing it was a full moon we would have kicked over every tombstone

Never the less , there has been a grave called the "witches grave" in this cemetery as long as I can remember. That goes back to the early 60s. My mother remembered it from her childhood as well. The story long predates Willie Morris.

Lived here all my life. The man speaking in the video is not only a history teacher with over 40 years of experience, but also an ordained minister and preacher of the oldest operating church in the county. It is absolutely not fake.
