My God, I was so in love with song back then. Used to put a smile on my face everyday when it came on the radio. Still love it today. It's such a happy, uplifting, feel-good song that just never fails in putting that smile on your face and in your heart.

More so today that the only way is up would be happy cause there's not many happy songs today, back in the 80's all the songs were happy, so it didn't stick out. Songs like this are still number 1 in New Zealand ! :-)

When I look at 80s & 90s music I always look at this as the one song I can point to as THE transitional song taking us from 80s into 90s music even though this was made in 88.

"If you should be evicted from your home, we'll move some where else" so poignant to me and my hubbie. I was very ill, 3 children under 5 , both families walked away, totally alone and repossession but, believe it or not this song did what it said on the box, we "held on," and slowly but surely we went up. Stupid song to mean so much to me but it hit a cord at the time.

thanks guys, still suffer with massive health problems, only to be expected, but still with my hubbie, now we are Nanna and Granddad, 3 terrific, hardworking kids, who I am proud to say they are mine, and life is much more settled now. Because we were alone, we learnt, back then, to be an incredibly strong unit, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Yazz was my first crush, back when I didn't even know what a crush was. At the tender age of four I remember loving this song and my mum telling me years later that I would refer to Yazz as the pretty lady. I think it was her eyes that first caught my attention. Indeed I still find myself attracted to women with beautiful eyes to this day and I think it all started with this lovely lady. I'll always remember this song fondly and hold a place in my heart for her.

Such a feel good anthem! The lyrics are so relevant today, perhaps even more so than they were back in '88, with the unstable economy and global unrest we all need more feel good music like this and less of that stupid bling, twerking and autotuned shit that passes for music nowadays.

+soundseeker63 Just discovered that the original song of this later club classic was by Otis Clay. Never knew it until now. The Yazz version is the one I remember best and another breakthrough for dance music.

+soundseeker63 Totally agree. The lyrics are so relevant now. Low interest rates low fuel prices. This is unsustainable. When interest rates rise it will be far too late people will be losing there homes. Wish British government would have increased interest rates gradually over the last 3 years. Personal debt levels are so high now. But at least when it does all go wrong they will be able to listen to this feel good anthem and feel positive about things.

Interesting I live two generations and when the kids put Hip-Hop, R&B and so on in the car, their faces are like NO EMOTIONS what so ever, its like that lyrics is saying something really hard on their heads....but when back then in our 80's 90's listening to songs like this one, we were so happy and moving deep in a good mood and amazing feelings; that's the difference

Only #96 here in the states. It always infuriated me that the US never really embraced house music the way the rest of the world did! In 1988, I was ALL OVER this shit! Was probably the only kid, 15 years old at the mall where I grew up (Augusta, GA) that was always buying 12" vinyl singles of this, as well as artists like Bronski Beat, Art Of Noise, Depeche Mode, Mel & Kim, Coldcut, New Order, BROS, D'Mob, Pet Shop Boys....(so many more). Lot of other kids my age made fun, only because they had no clue what half this music was. But, fuck'em! They can have their Bon Jovi, Garth Brooks and Anita Baker....LOL! This song brings back so many good memories. Thanks for sharing!

This had to cause so much confusion in the US with Yazoo.

I think that's one of the reasons why Yazz has two Z's. On Coldcut's 'Doctorin the House' single, she's just credited as Yaz.

They weren't. I think the use of the KLF record in this video may have been a nod to them for naming their song (as The Timelords) 'Doctorin' the Tardis', presumably inspired by Coldcut (featuring Yazz)'s 'Doctorin' the House'. Coldcut produced this song.

@MaskedMan66 They could have very easily - they were known to use others' work! But in that case, then wouldn't it be a Yazz & The Plastic Population record featuring in a KLF video, rather than the other way around (A KLF record featured in a Yazz video) here?

Brian Smith She had a child with, and divorced, her husband/manager in 1990, then released 2 albums on different record labels in 1994 and 1997 (neither of which bothered the charts, and there were also 2 recorded but shelved albums from 1990-1991 and 1992). In the mid-late 90's, she remarried, and relocated to Spain with her husband. She also became a Christian, releasing 2 Christian-themed albums in 2008 and 2011. She also apparently does outreach work with prisoners and addicts.
