Very cool! Interestingly enough, I just had this conversation with a PST on Reddit the other day, as this is ultimately where I want to take my career path.

Very neat. It's comforting to know the bar is set so high. Question: Scrum has certifications for Scrum Trainers, Masters, Product Owners, and Developers. What about businesses? This might show my naivety, but as a developer (myself) it would be extremely useful to know what businesses are Scrum-certified and not. This would help me trim down my job search. There's way too much "bad Scrum" out there that just straight up is not Scrum, and it would be helpful for me (and other devs out there that are frustrated with Scrum - that's not Scrum) to know what businesses are and are not "doing Scrum."

That would ask a lot of auditing. Not just once. I few tips you could look for; 1) do they use SAFe. When yes then run. 2) check if they have a Scrum Master vacancy posted. If that states things like “responsible for team performance”, “helps team velocity grow”, “provides reports” also run. 3) check if they have a PO vacancy posted. Look for things like “assigns work”, “makes sure wishes from stakeholders get executed”, “provide year plan”. When you see those things, you guessed it; run. When you get to an interview, ask “What has changed for the teams when you started with Scrum?” When the focus is on the mechanics (like “we do a Daily now”) there is room for improvement. You want answers like “we’ve placed responsibility where the knowledge is; in the Scrum Team. We didn’t do this all at once, it was a growth path for management and teams. When the team got more mature, we gave them more responsibility. When they showed more ownership and maturity, we took another step.” Let them describe how a Retrospective goes and a Daily Scrum. And ask what they would change in an ideal world. Last but, but not least, ask what has changed for management since they started working with Scrum. When get a “nothing”, chances are the Agile mindset is at team level at best. So management still likes control and doesn’t facilitate. Good luck with your search.

I would be a bit careful on a business that is Scrum certified. Just because people are certified doesn’t mean that they utilize good Scrum (or Kanban) practices. Some just know the lingo. If they say something like the following, I often take pause: “we let the client do what works for them.” or “We have our own way of doing Agile” or “We don’t strictly adhere to Scrum” or “We have Agile Project Managers”. Every time I have heard that (not many), I have either seen or later heard about how wonky such organization’s practices are. You can also go into Glassdoor to see if there are any issues with leadership even if there a lot of people certified in the organization. Sometimes that is not a good gauge if the organization is pivoting how they do work. However, if there is a pattern of leadership issues, I steer clear. Leaders need to be open to change if Scrum is going to work in an organization. Agile efforts will be hampered or fail otherwise. If it is a SAFe organization, I would be careful. Such an organization will often have people with many certifications who forget to practice the fundamentals. There are lot of organizations out there with poor implementations of SAFe. I would recommend finding someplace that focuses on its employees getting the fundamentals down. Here is a good video that may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5yblHmAis9keZY Not sure that was all that you really wanted, but I hope it helps.

Hey Ryan and Todd, thank you guys for this video. It was very encouraging for me to keep pursuing my goal to become a PST. Would you guys recommend 3-5 must read books on this journey?

🛬 I once looked into it and only thing I remember that it is massively expensive ;P oh, and that you need to lead classes/trainings on a regular basis as a trainer; 🛫 Worth listening to, but you didn't mention and of the hard regulations and requirements, that come with applying and keeping the title. Maybe something more about that?
