One of the ornamentations of a Qawali is that the expert qawals, sing/ recite an extra set of verses/ a single verse, that does not belong to the main body of lyrics that are being sung. This extra verse/ set of verses is chosen because of the related meanings of these verses with the main body of the lyrics. In this super duper hit Qawali that remains a favourite of listeners around the world, the opening lines have been chosen from a poem written by Jigar Muradabadi. Jigar was probably the greatest poet of 20th century that belonged to the old school of Urdu poetry. His masterpiece poem "Shikast e Tauba' (breaking of my tauba) is the lament/ tongue in cheek excuse of an alcoholic who is trying to explain his reasons for breaking of his vows of abstinence from alcohol. Have a read, Saaqī kī har nigāh pe bal khā ke pī gayā Lahroñ se kheltā huā lahrā ke pī gayā (I turned myself back to the sharab Khana as I got enticed by the inviting glances from the Saqi. Playfully like the waves, I merrily danced and drank) Ai rahmat-e-tamām mirī har ḳhatā muaaf Maiñ intihā-e-shauq meñ ghabrā ke pī gayā ( O the Greatest of Mercyfuls, do pardon my excesses. I just couldn't resist the extremes of temptations and drank) Piitā baġhair izn ye kab thī mirī majāl Dar-parda chashm-e-yār kī sheh pā ke pī gayā ( Of course, I couldn't have drunk without permission. It was the approving glance of my beloved from behind the curtain that encouraged me to drink) . He then sings a verse from Abdul Hameed Adum. The main body of "Yeh jo halka halka suroor hay" then starts. That poem is written by a relatively less well known poet.

The St George's Hall was houseful but there were only handful of Indian-Pakistani audience but the rest were white English speaking audience. You can google the capacity of this hall. Khan Sahab was equally polular among English people.
