Fun Facts: the sampled portion used in the latter quarter of 'Pray for Me' is heard c l e a r as DAY in the beginning of 'Sunrise'. However; BOLD move considering Yeasayer almost certainly DIDN'T clear their own sampling of Lyn Collins "Think" drums, repeated in the left speaker easily heard around 2:36 in Sunrise. It'd be funny if they won the lawsuit just to have to pay Lynn Collins & James Brown's family for their uncleared shit.

If you are referring to the "ululation" sound, no way that is sampled. The recorded sound fidelity of the ululations in Pray for Me are way higher... since we have not yet achieved the fabled "zoom, enhance" technology, it can't be sampled unless they recorded additional ululations on top (which is such a terrible decision I'm inclined to assume it was not made -- if that's what you mean? If I do misunderstand, can you please provide an audio timestamp for the sample and its usage in Pray for Me?) My assumption is these jerks think they own ululation in general and will be suing little old ladies in Afghanistan any day now. Amazing analysis about Lynn Collins, though, what a great find!

Songs got vibes. I can dig it. While the Wknd and Kendrick may have been influenced by this song, Pray for Me is in a different octave and key. Kendrick and The Wknd’s alleged use of this copyrighted chorus holds little to no resemblance and was in no way utilized as a defining feature of their song. All music holds influence in one way or another, whether we realize it or don’t. Music is something we create to share with people. To request a cease and desist of airplay and sales of a song that went double platinum (which means people like it) because you want to make money off of their work, is shameful, selfish and a dangerous path to venture down as the industry progresses. I am all for the protection of intellectual property and music copyrighting, but this, in my opinion, is a far cry from infringement. Congratulations to Yeasayer on all the views they’ll be receiving through this PR stunt.

That sucks. Yeah, I'm first hearing about them now and this track is a banger, but the whole thing doesn't reflect well on them hah. What's their story?

Pray for me isn't being sued by for similarities, but due to a potential sample that hasn't been cleared. As Fantano spotted, 0:00 in this track and 2:10 in Pray for me. It seems like a sped up and high pitched sample that never got cleared

I honestly thought that weird laugh chorus in Pray For Me was sampled from part of the beginning laugh in the song Wipe Out by The Safaris.

Both of them are great songs regardless of the lawsuit, it's the art vs the artist And tbh I still think the members of Yeasayer seem like nice people, even if this was a really bad move on their part

As someone who listens to both Kendrick and Yeasayer I gotta say the first time I listened to Pray for Me I immediately recognized the "Oooooh" from this song. I'm pretty sure it's the same. I would want credit at the very least if my voice was used on a popular track.

One of the former band members (Anand Wilder) said in an interview that he no longer thinks it's a sample and they closed the case

people saying there is no case don't understand sample law at all. they are not saying the songs are similar lmao. they are saying they took a portion of the song and then rerecorded it to avoid having to pay for a sample.

The suit against The Weeknd and Kendrick is a desperate cashgrab and bid for popularity. Y'all should be ashamed for suing them over such a small vocal part.
@oops68764 жыл бұрын
NGL, the beginning of this and about 2:10 of Pray For Me do sound eerily similar and like it is possible for it to be sampled from this track. Y’all can be upset about it, but don’t call it baseless. Just listen to the fuckin thing instead of Stanning your favorite artists to the grave like they’ll even notice you exist by then. I’m not saying it’s a closed case and this groups should win, but damn, y’all need to chill.

@888fluffy4 жыл бұрын
To everyone saying this doesn't sound like pray for me at all, you're right but that's not the point. The law suit is not for an kind of aesthetic similarity. It's because Kendrick/the weeknd sampled the song without permission. They clearly use the start of this song in pray for me. Yeasayer might be morally unreasonable in this lawsuit, true. But you can't deny they have legal grounds.
