Highlights from Yelena Isinbayeva's dramatic Gold medal win in the Women's Pole Vault at the Olympic Stadium in Athens in 2004.
Arriving at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Isinbayeva was already a world record holder and therefore a favourite; however she had placed third in the World Championships. Yelena Isinbayeva had already missed two attempts for 4.70 and 4.75 metres, leaving her in third place, with fellow Russian athlete Svetlana Feofanova leading. In a jump that could define a bronze or gold medal, she made her final attempt directly for 4.80m. This time, a perfect jump took Isinbayeva to the lead. Yelena Isinbayeva still came back to pass the 4.85m barrier and after that settle a new world record at 4.91m.

We had seats that night right in that corner of the stadium. It was about midnight, she was the only athlete left in a competion in the whole stadium. All eyes on Isinbayeva, everyone knew it was history in the making. When she crossed the bar, the place was going nuts! What an atmosphere! Electrifying! I still get goosebumps watching this video!

By proceeding to break the world record even after she had already secured her gold medal, Yerena really showed us what the Olympics are about. It’s not just a race in which you either come out on top or else you’re not good enough. It’s about overcoming your weaknesses and never giving up no matter what gives. It really upsets me when athletes get all grumpy and angry when they don’t win gold, and this is a wonderful example that shows when you have that Olympic spirit, when you truly believe in it and work hard for it, gold will never be the final destination but just something wonderful you encounter along the way :)

It was 15 years ago. So much different times. I had no internet, there was no cable tv, just 3 channels. Olympic games and world championships were something we were waiting for. Once a year you could see the athletes. Maybe for the last time. I still remember all the emotions, all the happiness for seeing the historical moment.

I remember seeing Isinbayeva break her then world records twice at Gateshead Stadium in July 2003 and June 2004, the moment I seen her break her record at Athens, I got a gut instinct that she would make it past 5.00m one day - no one in my family believed me ... until she did it of course. She is without doubt my favourite female Russian athlete of the 21st Century
