This is THE BIRD that got me hooked on birding. My dad pointed it out to me in my backyard when I was a little kid. Ever since then, I've been hooked.

Is that right? That's a fairly elusive bird to have as a favorite, at least where I live it is. Not that I'd disagree. Anytime you get to watch any woodpecker hitch up a tree or hammer on bark is reason to smile, right?

Definitely! I only have them in the winter where I live, so the few times a year that I see one, is much appreciated

What a fun comment to read! I never thought of myself as Cliff's Notes before. No, I'm kidding. It sounds more like you want to make the subject come alive in a way that the books can't show you. I would especially recommend my two part series on the importance of native plants to birds--and to all life, really. I hope your ornithology instructor is aware of that topic--and he probably is.

Enjoyed the video. I have the downey, hairy, and yellow belly in my yards and at the suet feeders a lot. Love watching them Last year I had the yellow belly set up in a maple tree and calling for a mate for 2 weeks! So happy he finally found her as they are loud callers.

Glad you liked it, Ian. As for seeing them in Arizona, I have no idea. But if you googled range maps for them, you could find out. I loved my visit to southeast Arizona last November--what cool birds you have! I still have movies to make about Curve-billed Thrashers and Acorn Woodpeckers, neither of which we see in Missouri.

I've always been impressed with how many birders the U.K. has considering how relatively few bird species it has. Of course, it's such a small land mass that you wouldn't expect a huge variety of species. But here in the St. Louis area, we get six woodpeckers. You're either going to have to come to the States for a visit ... or keep watching my movies.

Hi Jo. We're regular USA visitors now. Arizona and Minnesota this Spring.

You're not going to believe how many woodpeckers you see if you're going to Southeast Arizona. I got lots of film of the Acorn Woodpecker, which I haven't used yet, but I will, not to mention the Ladderback and the Gila. As for Minnesota, you'll be one up on me. What will you be looking for?
